A few miles later I spotted a high altitude beaver (porcupine) He was about 10 feet up the tree. I put a .044 lead ball into the side of his head and he fell down out of the tree. He was thrashing about a bit so I finished him off with the .22. I suppose I could have finished him off with another lead ball, but a big ol' ball of spikes gets the adrenaline running, even if it is the death twitches... He is a good sized porcupine, I carefully skinned him, quartered him and took the back straps. I had the straps with dinner tonight.

At about 7 pm I headed back to the truck.  In the fading light I saw some white ears twitching in the undergrowth off to my side. a slow creep later I could see that the snowshoe hare was facing away from me, and one quick thwap and he was slumped on the ground. 



I snapped a quick pic and put him in my bag... which was made out of my undershirt and a stick (lol)

I headed out in the near dark with about 6 miles to go I took an interesting picture of the sunset and turned on the headlamp and walked home to begin processing some food for the upcoming week. It was a very exciting and productive day. According to my gps watch I covered about 17 miles.  Which means my dog probably did 30 with all the dashing about in the bushes. 

I am tired, but well fed.   Enjoy the sunset, back on the hunt tomorrow evening after work.



I am pretty pumped because my brother gets here on Wednesday and we will definitely be getting a lot of hunting in over the next couple weeks!  Hopefully more pics to come.

Another Y predator black editon frame is done. I experiment red tinted epoxy this time. Frame is made from african blackwood (grenadill). Sanded town to 2500 grit, finished with carnauba and bees wax. Enjoy .

Do you "assume an athletic stance" or are you "casual-tall?"

I've found that a little more width and a touch more crouch, makes me steadier.

This one I made for me. It is pocketable and is slightly curved forward. It can handle both hammer grip and pinch/thumb support.

I do not know which wood is this, I lost the track. In order to be more sure in its consistency I stabilized it in my vacuum jar (chamber) and it gained some 20% in weight using BLO ( I do not have Cactus oil or similar).

The rubber is 18 to 12 mm Precise Green, my new favorite with the pouch good for 8-10 mm ammo.

I made my second plywood Altoids Hunter this weekend, this time from 10mm Baltic Birch. I’m waiting for the paint to dry before banding it up. Bill Hays posted this design during a build-off a few years ago. It fits into a standard Altoids tin when separated into two pieces, and performs great as a shooter.

I made the first one from 5mm Baltic Birch, partly because I didn’t think I’d like shooting it, but wanted something I could shoot when arthritis was making my left thumb sensitive to pressure. 

Well, I was wrong about not liking to shoot this design, although it was a learning experience. I started out holding the shooter in the classic hammer grip.

That was okay, but I wasn’t falling in love. Then I lowered the forks about ⅜-inch. That was better. Then switched to a pinch grip, with the bottom three fingers on the handle.

It was great, but wasn’t going to save my thumb any torture. 

Finally, I adjusted my grip so I had three fingers on the handle, my index finger in pinch position, and dropped my thumb under the fork.

Eureka! Great control and comfort, and no pressure on the thumb!

So I cut out a version in 10mm ply. I think I will keep both. The thinner version will be limited to target bands, and 1632 tubes. But both are fun to shoot. And I think they will come in handy when I’m showing newbies the ropes. People just seem comfortable with that hammer grip style, and it’s going to be easy to get them to move their fingers up onto the forks after a few shots - or so I imagine!

ordered the scout from pro shot hoping it will be a good first slingshot, eagerly awaiting delivery i've already set targets in the garden. and watched many instructionals on youtube. i cant wait till its here! the elastic bands are starting to look good

Falling out - I've heard this used in church settings, but it's also used to describe fainting.  ex: "He mangled his hand on the chop-saw and fell out" or "If your blood sugar gets too low you're gonna fall out!"

Gaulded - to chafe or irritate.  Originally from the word 'gall', it seems to have evolved over here to just mean chafed, especially in the thighs or crotch region.  ex: "I went out riding horses yesterday and I'm gaulded to pieces this morning!"

Bless it - really more of a phrase.  Similar to the Southern "Bless her heart", but abbreviated.  Usually said at the end of a sentence either saying something negative about someone or after recounting someone's unfortunate circumstances.  The tone used is key here to emphasize pity, sadness, exasperation, etc.  "Jan's gone and left her husband. This is number three! Bless it."

There were a few others like "Yall" or referring to all carbonated sodas as "Coke" that I'm familiar with and seem to be used throughout much of KY.  If anyone is in the area (Louisville/Nashville/etc/)  I'd highly recommend a visit to this region.  It's got some beautiful scenery, really friendly people, and a few interesting attractions.  Less than 30 minutes from here is Mammoth Cave National Park, the largest known cave system in the entire world!  You gotta love how varied America is, even just a couple hundred miles from your own house.

In my data, the wide-fork version was about 4.1% faster than the narrow-fork version. The wide-fork version also gave substantially more consistent speeds. I did my best to make the setups consistent, but:

• the wide-fork version had ever-so-slightly narrower and ever-so-slightly longer bands (actual measurements used), and
• the narrow-fork version had an ever-so-slightly wider leather pouch versus the microfiber pouch on the narrow-fork version (okay, so sue me... I was too lazy to cut off one of the pouches to re-tie)

We have lots of speed data on these bands from SecretStallion.  I'm also curious how the two compare for stretch and durability.  Also speed comparison for a 32" draw... are they close? 

I enjoy the Sum Pinks but don't seem to get the life out of them that I did with thicker latex.  The speed is sweet with light ammo but I seem to be changing bands often. It has a nice smooth stretch with no felt stacking or sudden wall at the end. I'm curious if the newer Gen3 .45mm Precise is the same. I have some Gen2 .40mm and .50mm and the stretch isn't nice like the Sum Pink.

Recent Learnings: Slingshots are easy to make, easy to use, completely intuitive, great practice for trad bows and **** lethal on small game. 

Some of you may have seen my last post about spruce hens during moose season, which is the reason I found slingshot forum in the first place. Well a couple more hens, that I don't have pictures of, and these two red squirrels, and we have the beginnings of a Slingshot Skillet. Add in a couple peppers from the greenhouse and an onion from the grow beds a bit of salt and pepper over medium heat and all you need is a cold beer to die a happy man!

I also have the red squirrel pelts drying on my weasle stretchers, may make a ammo pouch or two. 

The gory details:
Slingshot- Red Alder Natural
Bands-Double black theraband 1 inch straight cuts to homemade pouch. something like 7.5 inches active band. Draws 22lbs at my 31 inch draw. 

Ammo- 1/2in marble. Weight 76grains. 

Distance- 9 feet and 8 yards. 

Additional notes: The first was shot moving vertically up a tree trunk, at very close range. I did not lead him enough and missed the head. I hit him square in the spine, upon inspection the damage to the spine, ribs and internal organs was extreme.  The second was a further shot, but the squirrel was not spooked like the first. He got one in the side of the head. The dog got to him as he did the post-headshot twitch. No damage to the meat or the useable part of the fur, did get the head chewed a bit though.

I will be reinforcing it with some pine boards. It's not very big. 19" high X 10.5" wide and 1' deep. Should be more than adequate for my fairly close range indoor range (about 22'). Have to experiment with the backing. Been using a sheet in my current box, but get a lot of bounce-out. Not sure if it's the thickness, or if it's not hanging loose enough. Thoughts and ideas about what to use would be greatly appreciated! Will post the finished project later. Thanks for looking!

I've made some useful changes on my vice-mechanism operated pouch to band mounting rig:

The actual vice unit is simplified and is now directly connected to the mounting block ( that moves along the steel rod rails. 

For those who have downloaded the previous tutorial version and have started making the rig, please refer to pages 6 and 7 of the updated tutorial document now available in the "templates" section of the forum.

To avoid drilling a 12 mm and a "necked-down" 8 mm hole in mounting block B where the actual vice mechanism connects, a steel washer glued around the original 8 mm hole is fine for the purpose of reducing contact friction of the vice unit screw and inserted "stopper" screw where it makes contact with mounting block B (hope all this makes sense, hmm).

The images below show the differences between the initial design and the much improved new design (why did I not think of this right away... ?). The new design ensures full rigidity of the threaded 8 mm vice screw unit when the ends of flat bands or tubes are placed under tension. 

If you do run into any difficulties while making one of these rigs, I'll be happy to provide possible solutions. 

Here's a latest shooter I've carved out of a natural piece of cork oak wood (Quercus suber)

Although it has a reasonable bulky handle, it is quite pocketable. It was finished with linseed oil and natural beeswax.

In the pictures, it is equipped with a 1.7cm X 1.2cm X 26cm Theraband set, for glass marbles.

Scout LT arrived today. First thoughts: light, slim,size fits to my hand nicely.

No pressure at the base of the thumb when shooting. After 100 shots that can change, don't know yet.

We have 5 cm thick pine 22 m (72,2ft) from my front door and usually it is my first target for my first shots with every new slingshot.

Three shots & three hits, so this can't be bad 

some of the specifications seem impressive , but are they that good in reality?

there are a few to choose from ranging from cheap to quite expensive

ive gotten a redback and also the aluminum Bolts. The bolts work well but im not happy with the tips...the tips in the bolts are screwed in, its a 5mm metric thread. At least a 5mm threaded rod fits in good enough. Anybody who tried to fit broadheads in a redback will find there are several issues that need to be calculated in...someone been succesful and can tell me what tips to buy?

So I'm in the market for a single-shot shotgun, preferably a 20ga, that would be fine for squirrel hunting and rabbits but light enough/small enough to take with me on some extended backpacking trips.  I've scoured the web and found several different brands, but it's hard to come by any detailed reviews on them.  My biggest concern is kick.  I've got a Maverick 88 12ga that I can shoot game loads out of all day, but I'm worried a smaller gun will kick like a mule.  I'm on a budget so $150 is going to be my max, and I'll be scouring my local gun stores and pawn shops to hopefully find a good deal.  Below are some of the ones I've found that have piqued my interest.  If you have experience with them please let me know what you thought, or give me a recommendation on what to get!

Midland Backpacker - small length in 12ga, 20ga and .410 bore

Hatfield - $99 and sold in Wal-Mart.  Everything I've heard said it kicks like a mule, but maybe a recoil pad would help?

ATI Nomad - It's a brand I've never heard of, but it's less than $90.

Iver Johnson - They've got some new models out there, and it's the only brand that rings a bell when I hear the name.

H&R Shotguns - I've seen these around $100 at gun stores.  They're all 20+ years old, but people seem to swear by them.

First up is a Black Ballistic Grade G10 TopShot made from a solid sheet of 0.794 thick material... This particular material is my personal favorite for making my own slingshots from. The weight is perfect, the "temperature" and "feel" whether summer or winter is perfect, and in my opinion... this is the best all around material a slingshot can be made from.

Two are available, if they are gone when you contact Daranda, it will be a couple days after I return from the SEST before I can make your's.

Second up is a true Jade Green G10... this particular grade is extremely difficult to work... very hard and unforgiving. A little heavier than the black but in many people's opinion, one of the prettiest a person can own.

There is only one of these available, and it's first come first served final, as I don't have any more of this exact material and have not found any that matches it in quite some time. (the picture truly doesn't do it justice)

Some (many) have asked for a thinner version of the TopShot... well your wish is granted!

About ½" thick, these are also made from black ballistic grade G10.

Last but not least is a standard, but still very pretty green G10... 

I have not done extensive testing on this material, but it kind of smells like G11 when working it... (G11 is a high heat and abrasion resistant grade of phenolic) and I can tell you first hand, it IS difficult to work, but not quite as bad as the Jade G10.

Since the material costs a little less and working it wasn't quite as hard either, it's not going to be quite as expensive.

Three are available right now, with 3 more in the process of being made, to be completed when I get back from the SEST.

I try but no good. Oh well, let's get out early ( my favorite time of day ). While getting ready, I thought maybe a walk down the beach with a rod and go for some Blues-always a blast.

Pound for pound there ain't no fish that fights harder. Then I said to myself, you haven't shot your slingshot in months because of a change in your condition ( I have Parkinson's Disease ).

Well, the new meds, I'm happy to say, are working well! Decision made! An early morning bike ride through a wooded path that runs about 20 miles through green acres property.

So I put 3 Lidocaine patches on my arthritic elbow ( bone on bone Arthritis -lot of fun-it also happens to be the arm that I hold the frame in.

Then covered it with an Ace bandage rather tightly-popped a Vicodin ( don't worry, only when I absolutely have to ) then to WaWa for a 20 ounce Coffee ( without a doubt, the best coffee in the known universe! ).

Slingshot I used was a self made cold bent 3/8" solid aluminum Rod frame (TTT) with bands mounted on the inside of the forks of the throat (A little different ).

Ammo of choice today was a bunch of 5/8" cats eye marbles of which I have at least 40 or 50 lbs of. Well off we went, water bottle filled with cold water ,57 degrees out ( Love it!  ), hardly anyone out and bout yet, just starting to get light-what a morning!

Got on the path and not 5 minutes had passed when a Raccoon ran in front of me. Then rode over a small creek and flushed out a flock of Mallards. Nothing for the next 10 minutes or so then I saw a big Doe with a fawn.

I think it was this years fawn too because it had some fading spots. Seeing a Mother Deer and a fawn out in their natural setting-beautiful. Then I came to the spot where the local kids hangout, partying and stuff. It had been awhile since i was there.

I promptly put the kick stand down, set up about 20 empty Beer cans, and went to work. I started off at around 15 feet or so and missed the first can by about 2 feet! (Oh this is gonna be fun). Not lying here guys ( why would I? )-I missed the first 4 cans I shot at-from around 15 feet! Then the Vicodin started to kick in or something else kicked in because I started hitting. Now this is fun! Then I started hanging cans up on branches, setting them bottom out, filled a few with water ( always fun ), and then threw a few in a small stagnant pond and played sink the can! Loved to do that when I was a kid. Well, after about an hour and a half, the pain was letting itself be known so I said that's it. There was a time when I would have kept shooting till I had no ammo left. Age and wisdom does teach you something. in this case-save some for another day old timer! ( Who said old timer? I'm just a big kid! ****-that was a lot of typing!!!! Good time guys!

I am not sure how much of truth is there since I made slingshots with larger pouches to accommodate marbles, but to a point it might be.

So I decided to make a slingshot a bit better suited for hunting (I am not a hunter so all I know about it is what I heard here in the forum, occasionally). I cut 2 bands of Precise Green which showed good results when I put them under test some time ago (https://slingshotforum.com/topic/119172-tbg-vs-precise-green/?hl=%2Bprecise+%2Bgreen) with a pouch accommodating 10 mm lead balls, and I cast about 50 of them for him until he makes his own mold, of course, should he stay with slingshots at all. I will ask him for a feedback.

I think the wood is oak and I carved it a little bit and then coated it with the mixture of BLO, Turpentine and Beeswax.

Range- 12 and 15 yards. 

For the last few weeks my mother was in the hospital and reading this forum and occasionally shooting slingshots gave me a way to clear my head and recharge my batteries.  Honestly it has provided a bit of distraction as well.  

Well last Friday night (the 20th) she was able to come home and was surrounded by family, in her own house, in her own room, when she slipped calmly and peacefully from this world.  She will be greatly missed and leaves a big hole in this world but her pain is no more and she is with those who have gone before.  

You all were there for me so I could be there for her and you have no idea how much that means to me.

Attendant loot included two types of Precise latex I have not tried, pouches and a W&T gizmo.

In return I sent him a Wishbone, (Of course) and A laminated Frankenfork.

I made this from a Brazilian Cherry and White Acacia flooring sample. Faced with B.B. and an inserted neo magnet. I hate that I did not know that the finish on the magnet would sand off.    Other than that, I think I did okay.

  So, if you are one of those guys, I can help you shoot the best group ever, if you shoot a lot but just can't quite get all the shots in one spot.

1. now i'm assuming that you are shooting 15 to 50 shots a day. If not, skip this post.

 If you are, I want you, while you're sitting there, just take your thumb and feel over the section of your index finger where you hold the pouch. You will find that you either have a callus or a sore spot where the ammo rests. Feel it? If not, you aint shooting enough. More practice for you fella! If you can feel it, I would be willing to bet odds that it is down from the top toward the inside of the finger.  This is proof positive that you are having release problems. You can't argue, the proof is right there on your finger !!

2. Next time you shoot, you are going to get that pill right on top of your finger. Your going hold it there with your unbent thumb. Now your going to extend your fork upward locking elbow and look down at your pouch. Is it still straight? Didn't roll it back down hill? Are both holes where the bands go still right over each other? OK find your anchor point and bring the fork down past the target. Her we go! Slowly raise the fork. Are the bands lined up right? Slowly raise to the bull and just as you get on target, Softly like a mother holds the hand of a child, let the shot go. Don't mess around let 'er go before you get the shakes.

3. Now, if you had a good stance and a nice straight line between fork and elbow, that shot HAS to fly true. And the next one will be right there too. I want you to take five shots the same way.

  Now if you did as told, the five shot group might be a little high or low etc, but the GROUP are all going to be together.

4. You can tell me thanks for the help after you join up.

I'm still able to get very reasonable ammo speed from the Mini-T but I had to experiment a bit to find the best tapered bands for the job.  The accuracy with this frame made it worth while to find a comfortable shooting band-ammo combination. The wrong bandset had me anticipating the slaps and tossing shots everywhere.

A vice (US terminology = vise) is normally used for the purpose of keeping materials in place securely between a set of “jaws”, or other means to facilitate processing these with various tools.

The freely rotating vice screw pushes or pulls back the “jaws” via a connection to a fixed non-rotating element.

This simple mechanical process can also be used for the purpose of generating tension on rubber flat bands and tubes needed to tie slingshot pouches securely by means of the so-called “wrap & tuck” method, or wrapping and tying a knot.

This tutorial will show you how to build this user friendly pouch to band attachment jig. NB: You will have to purchase spring-operated clamps that fit inside the mounting block holes ("windows").

Then I got a new can and stepped back to 32 feet. Took a few shots to get dialed in (mostly windage, height was pretty spot on) and missed a bit more, but happy with the results!

Trying to get two hits. Not too easy...

Second hit was great. It went through the middle part of that cap

Paper route, working in a bowling alley, then after high school spent 6 years in machine shop (full apprenticeship),then found out I could make a lot more money in trucking so I spent the next 30 years in trucking.

I then finished my working career in the public school system as a maintenance/custodial worker. Wow, one day you're working and the next you are done! The reality of it hits you on that first Monday after you finish up.

Everyone is going to work and you are home-and for good! Well, not one to waste time, I bought myself a few little presents. I always liked mountain biking but I had to tone that down a bit to a cruising bike.

I picked out a 29" Genesis cruiser by Kent. I'm 6'2"s and 220lbs so the extra size is very comfortable. Got my water bottle rack ready and that little carry sack holds you know what-a Slingshot and some ammo for that occasional piece of trash that gets in my way!

I also rewarded myself with a nice, solid American made Power Washer. I was sick of spending $100 every year on a piece of Chinese junk that never lasts. I thought the bike was American made too because the company is right here in my home state of New Jersey.

I guess the parts are but I saw on the box "assembled in China". Well, at least some of the parts are American. I've been trying more and more to buy American when possible.

So when my pills are working and the body is cooperating, keep your eyes peeled for a semi large fellow wearing a Raiders cap either riding a new black bike or power washing something. That person could very well be a retired Flatband!!!!!

Recently while going through a box of assorted J.I.C's i've had knocking about for donkeys years, I found an old black widow knock off I had when I was many years younger than I am now.

Even though the tubing was predictably knackered, and the arm rest seemed to have miraculously narrowed over the years as it was now far tighter on my arm than I remember    I decided it was worth keeping to repair it for my youngest son to use (under supervision), something i'm in the process of doing at the moment.

This led me to wondering if I could build myself a decent slingshot, I have the tools (I think), but what I don't have is the know how, something that became abundantly clear when I ordered up a set of cheap replacement pouches that I could use for my sons repair job, and what arrived was about a third of the size of the original, which upon doing some reading seems to be about right.

So that's why i'm here, total newb probably trying to run before he can walk but hey, why break the habit of a lifetime

the prices were very good and i was going to order again but have lost the contact details.

they offered quantities and sizes based on deals , for example gold deal 5000 x  9.5mm or silver deal 2000 x 12mm or something along those lines.

does anyone know this company?

  These poor old aged just won't go around my Hathway Sniper. I tried, really tried, but it's putting the hurt on my left hand.

Only one ball of each weight and a shoulder that had been slept on wrong the night before so four shots each. From the pouch tie to the tip of the fork is 7.25" and the draw seems to be a little under my length for regular frames judging where the fork tips sit relative to my hand, so say maybe just under 31"

There's a little power there but the draw weight is nuts, hopefully sliding in 3/4" of 1842 and making a cocktail will prove useful for these cannon balls or more conventional ammo otherwise I'll have to finally make a three person slingshot and get crazy. If the cocktails show some positive results I'll post those but that's all for now, these straws are much heavier than I had hoped for so they're going into the stash

I am never going to use them, so I have included them too.

The different coloured bands are about 220mm long, and are tapered from 20mm to 12mm.

The band sets look to be at least 0.60mm – 0.70mm in thickness.

Also – when I was testing Sumeike, Precise & SoBong, I placed any off cuts which I felt may still be of usable size,

into their own individually labelled envelope for future use. I will include all these envelopes too.

Now, I am sure you will agree that this is worth every penny!

1 This is the only OTT that slaps my fingers in front of the slingshot. I am using gold therabands if that matters. I has shot smaller OTT ie Jellybean and get no slap. Any ideas on how to solve this???? thanks
