Remember, we are talking Apache slings, which are a very specific type of animal. Not as impressive in terms of speed or range of longer, multiple swing slings of movies and legends, but much more effective at its given task: taking game at short range. The latter's use is a much more valuable hunting skill than the former, which I find is more useful for likes of gathering coconuts or retrieving Frisbees. If I were hunting at range with a sling weapon, if possible I'd make a short sling mounted to a thin 4 ft staff. No rotations, it's overhand which I find easier to make hits with, and it's easier to keep in line with the target and better control of release.
