If you really need answers ASAP, may I suggest you head over to any of the dozens of Air Rifle forums where questions like this are discussed often and in depth.
Gamo makes a gold platted "ballistic alloy" .177 that I use exclusively. They claim an increase in fps by some percentage factor; I can quasi believe that claim, but like them more for the fact that they're gold platted & not going to leave "remnants" in my barrels.
Well if you've invested in quality guns or mods, then you'd want to maintain them to the best of your abilities, right? It's not crazy expensive, but you only get 50 pellets for $10USD, which is considerably more than lead...
It might be worth picking up a tube sometime & compare; it'd be interesting to hear if someone who shoots at that range notices a notable difference, too.
There is only one way of finding out the best pellet for your gun and that's by trying as many different kinds as you can. I've had 2 indentical guns in the past and they have both preferred different pellets. All barrels are different, I'd recommened ordering some sample packs off the internet and seeing which brand groups best for you.
there are that many brands out there the best option is to get pellet packs they give you a few pellets of some diferent brands and the one that seems most consistent in the gun is the one for you my air arms s310 loves bisley magnums my bros falcon fn19 doesn't neather does my bsa r10 you just have to try a few out ebay do pellet packs
Ditto on the Beemans. The H&N match wad cutters at closer ranges Hit with and an audible whop, instant kill. Longer rangers I used the Beeman Siker Arrows, a pointed pellet. Tended to go through game at close range but deadly at 30-50 yards in my old Webley Vulcan.
The heavier the pellet and the more controlled the expansion the better and I like pure lead. I have a couple of tins of the old Benjamin pellet that I **** for hunting. I only shoot a 22 pellet rifle anymore hunting, but I still have a couple of 177 rifles yet. (English and German)
I find domes are by far best, especially in turbulant air.... crossman premiers are OK and priced right but JSB Exacts are what fire best in most of my AGs. And everyone is right on the money saying that some guns prefer certain ammo, so try a few till you match ur gun
Forgot to mention using Beeman Extra Heavy Kodiaks for any gun sold that advertises speeds over about 1100 FPS. Shooting supersonic with a pellet is widely known to cause the pellet to tumble as it rapidly slows back to subsonic. The holy grail of Pellets is just subsonic as far as how I tune mine.
OH and through non pcp guns its sometimes fun to put a wadcutter in backwards for shots out to 12 yds...devastating expansion for lower power guns or AG pistol hunting. Great for frogs and mice. You can sometimes hear a pop on impact. I wouldn't consider it with non lead pellets...or through a match grade (L/W) barrel like on top end guns
My 60 yd paper tests with solid lead pointed pellets has me believing they should be off the shelves. Polimer points like the Preditors seem much better but penetration has never seemed to a problem in .177/.22 so why bother when that money can buy a heavy pellet that will carry farther and still penetrate by force of weight.
