I know "some" here are interested in reading/hearing about historical slingshots. Saw this article from the UK Telegraph Feb 13 2010

http://www.telegraph...evon-coast.html

Snippet for those that don't wanna follow:
"In total, 295 artefacts have so far been recovered, weighing a total of more than 84kg. The cargo recovered includes 259 copper ingots and 27 tin ingots. Also found was a bronze leaf sword, two stone artefacts that could have been sling shots, and three gold wrist torcs – or bracelets."

Though just a passing mention of a possible artifact...interesting none the less.
I would love to see the slingshots from 900 BC era! Any of the UK people have links or pics of the find?

Very cool find, but I am sitting here beside myself wondering if they could have possibly used some kind of elastic like rubber. I thought it was a fairly recent product?

Rubber was volcanized around 1844.The stones they were talking about were most likely sling stones. All together differant than a slingshot.

they took fabric and put a stone inside,
than gathered kinetic energy and let one side of the fabric go.

no elastic energy was used.

Slingshot or sling shot was and is the term commonly used for the ammo thrown by a traditional sling....even the sling itself is sometimes mistakenly refered to as a slingshot......My father and uncles who used a traditional sling to hunt rabbits in kentuky refered to them as slingshots...when I wanted my first wristrocket back in the 70's he couldn't understand the point and offered to teach me how to use a traditional sling in the foolishness of youth I couldn't be bothered..

I wrote about the history of the words, Sling, Slingshot, Catapult etc in another part of the forum, though I can't remember where ... When it comes to ancient rubber, it was documented by a man in the 1800's but it was around for a lot longer in other places, this article is specifically talking about the voyaging and trading of early man; it's possible they had rubber for such things. They also had many designs for throwing stones with string, this could've been an extended handle for projectiles. If you're interested in slinging in the original David and Goliath way, try slinging.org

David killed Goliath with angular momentum which he obtained by exerting centripetal force. Centrifugal force is no more real than Midi-chlorian force, but don't tell Luke. :P
