I am currently making quite a few in a large batch and this was the first one to be finished... It had been sanded through the grits to 320 and I thought I'd put a layer of lacquer on, as the ply is thirsty to then sand it all back and go through to 600 before the final finish.

The core is Macassar Ebony and the ply is some funky furniture grade stuff with a Birch face and a phenolic Eucalyptus core.

Anyway I had spent allot of time (and effort) evenly removing the Birch face from the mating surfaces before glueing it all together, what i had not noticed is the dust from the Ebony while sanding had gotten trapped inside all the pores of the Eucalyptus. When the lacquer hit it this all popped... aaarrgghh... well actually its not that bad but im not 100% happy with it so its my new EDC happy ending.

I would like to make some more like this but using lighter exotic woods, Zebrano, Pau Amarello maybe.

Oh yeah the tips are Santos Rosewood

Looks pretty nice to me. I really like the ebony against the lighter woods...seems to make the grain stand out.

The idea is a one i might try again with the ebony, what i would do next time is near finish the ebony core first then add the ply plates. Minimizing the sanding and dust transfer

Its doesn't look 'bad' as such, best way to describe it is it looks dirty. Overall its nice though

Ebony is a bear to work with for that reason (among others) I usually try to put a rough coat of CA over the lighter pieces to seal them before I put the ebony together, even If I know I'm going to sand most of it back off. Easier than trying to remove ebony dust, as you no doubt can confirm. as long as you are going back over it with CA, a coat early in the process don't hurt anything.

aaah, thats what i thought with the lacquer but left it too late. CA would be ideal due to the difference in drying times. I normally mix more darker woods together, this is the first time I have tried such a contrast.
