So there's been a lot of talk about finishing lately. Linseed oil, tung oil, danish oil, urethane, bees wax, etc. But nobody has mentioned outdoor DECKING oil?? I mean this stuff is designed to penetrate, and protect from the elements. What more could you want from a finish?? I used it on my first ERGO about a year ago and as far as I can tell it's in as a good a shape now as when I first applied the oil. with all due respect to the linseed soakers, it took about 24 hours and was ready to shoot! Now I admit if you want a nice shine to it then a bit of beeswax or similar polish wouldn't hurt, but that's just a matter of choice. Heh heh just thought I'd give the newbies something else to think about! :)

It crossed my mind when a mate gave me about 936 decking off cuts lol, but that meant i would of had to go and buy the decking oil, so being a cheap tight ass that I am lol, I stuck with my free polys and laqs and oils I have in abundance at work.. but you could well be right mate, it does give the timber some charisma hey..

"not pretty" that's an interesting observation, and probably a fair one too!

And it likely has mold/mildew inhibiting chemicals. When I was a painter I was told not to use those products inside because of the chemical differences from interior coatings. Now it may only be due to out gassing but why use it when there are so many other options.

What is "Decking Oil" made from? I found one web sight that listed ingredients for a decking oil home brew. Linseed Oil was one ingredient.

Timber Decking Oil Recipe

Raw Linseed oil 4 parts
Mineral turps 11 parts
Terobene (drying agent) 1 part
This formula can be scaled up or down suit to your needs.
The cost saving is at least 50% less than the pre-made mix.

Here is another home brew formula:
- One part linseed oil (boiled or raw); one part white spirit; and one part Cupranol (this is a clear commercial timber preservative used for fence posts etc). Any clear substitute will probably serve as well.

Cheers,
Northerner

Yeah I just checked, all it had listed was 60% hydro carbons (mineral turps) and .5% of ocithilone a bactericide/mildewcide that has recently been banned for use in carpets and kids toys. apparently when the kids suck on the toys it gets ingested and causes a number of problems.

I think I'll be sticking to the poly urethane!!

It's basically a varnish recipe with mildew inhibitors. Main ingredient is linseed oil, a drying agent(Japan drier) and a thinner(turps/mineral spirits) some tar if you want color. Just leave the _____icide out. I think rapier posted a varnish recipe awhile back.

I use some sort of wipe on eucalyptus finish but I don't know what it's called and it's ready in about 3 minutes :)
