Only suitable material I currently have to make frames with is some 3/4" and 1" redoak. And don't have bandsaw with which to split them.

Am getting bit tired of the natural oak look that have used in my several homemades.

Soooooooo, what say all you finishing experts here on ssf? How should I finish my next several projects? Really need lotsa advice!

Thanks, Jim.
I've been using tung oil. Will danish oil provide much different look?

Danish oil is usually a mix of tung oil or polymerized linseed oil, I don't think the finish will be drastically different but I may be wrong. You could always try a different brand of oil, I recently bought a different brand of danish oil and the finish couldn't have been further apart from my usual brand.

Also oak is a very dense wood so using an equal part mix with white spirit on your first coat will help the oil into the grain.

i use teak oil, it seems to make the grain stand out SJ is right, the oak is dense and thirsty, i did the ss from my last make w/10 applications of teak oil, i could see the oak suck it in now as the oil cures it is taking on a sheen, looks great on red oak

If you want to stain it..i might suggest a nice wenge or chocolate stain, finished with a gloss laquer coat..oak stains up beautifully with these tones, and laquer gives a nice hard glassy finish..recommend a very fine progressive sand before staining and clear coating..
