i used o love sling shots when i was young, now i want to get back into the sport, but since there are so few manufacturers it is hard to pick up a good model, i used to shot through but am also interested in over the top, don't know if this requires a different skill set? i lean towards bill hays models, but it is hard to even get responses.............. from anyone. if i get into it like i used to i am also going to buy a rig to send to my son in Afganistan.

Welcome to the site! As an FYI, you are member number 4000! When you look at your profile, you can see your number in the address bar.

As far as which slingshot to get, I have to ask what you are looking for. We have many vendors here that sell great non-wrist braced models. If you are looking for wrist braced, take a look at Saunders Wrist Rocket line.

non wrist braced, i am looking for power, ability to also shoot arrows, love the over the top look but am unsure if it takes different skills, also like the gangasta style of shooting, seems like it would be easier on the wrist, more stable? but thats just a thought. which are very good manufacturers, i ask because i like very well made toys, i would rather start at great quality and work up to it than to buy cheap-starter and continue spending money.

curious? oh! i need to erase the 4000?

thanks for the info, look forward to more

PM me your address and I will send you one of my aluminum framed bent rod slingshots with Theraband Green tubes for your son. This is a very sturdy slingshot and the bands will last a long time. You can see what they look like here;

Cutting right through all the B.S. : Over the top with flat bands is the way to go and you can shoot them with the slingshot held horizontal or vertical or anywhere in between. Multiplex construction is a good safe material and can be faced with beautiful hardwoods. Theraband gold colored bands are one of the most popular, but you can even go to the store and buy LATEX exercise bands and cut them to size with a rotary cutter and a mat like is used for cutting fabrics for quilt making and such. Flats won't usually last as long as tubes, but the easy pull and explosive reaction of flats will make you love them. There are many options out there, but what I am suggesting will make you happy until you decide you'd like to try something different just to know what it is like. Laminated solid hardwood makes such a beautiful slingshot you almost won't want to use it. You can buy a slingshot like Jim Harris makes with an aluminum core and faced with hardwood, (built like a knife handle) and it will last for a life time. All made to use over the top flat bands. Easy to attach too, just wrap a cut rubber band around the slingshot rubber at the fork tip and tuck it under a few wraps to make it stay put.
There are as many opinions about slingshots as there are people who shoot them and each one of them has a valid point from where they shoot, but only you can decide what will be the funnest way for you and the most accurate. Trial and error on your part, but with some hope from the rest of us to give you the best advice we can.

Don't worry about it if you cannot find it. I just thought I would let you know that you were member number 4000. :) It is a nice round number. With Henry giving you a nice tube shooter, and the advice from Smitty....I think you will be on the right track.

Just my own opinion, but I don't see a need for a "pea shooter" I will do that through a straw. With a slingshot I think of it as a weapon with killing force if rigged properly. For me that what it is all about. I want to be able to put a hunting band set on any one of my frame designs and bring home food. I want to put on a light pull set of target bands and bring home a tournament trophy with the same frame. However, if you lighten up your bands too much from hunting strength to shoot in a tournament you will have an entirely different trajectory to get used to shooting. I try to stay in the middle of my pulling strength so I can really get used to the slingshot. Just like using the exact same amount of powder in each shell casing by hand loading them yourself. In a tournament every shot counts, but when hunting, everything is in the stalk of the game to get close enough for a killing shot. Close enough so you won't miss, but if you do the first shot will tell you how to aim and connect on the second shot. Get yourself a slingshot that makes you feel like you got one of the best and that looks like one you would like to spend 100 hours practicing with before you even think about going to another design. You might find a natural fork slingshot made by one of the guys and would like to give it 100 hours of practice...maybe make your own natural and buy some band sets to start out with from Tex shooter, Flatband or A+ Slingshots to name just a few. This way your cost is low but you get to practice 100 hours with a flat band equipped slingshot to help open your imagination to what would help you shoot better. Most of the time, if you can hold the slingshot with comfort, it is just that hard earned practice that answers all of your questions for you. My signature says practice for a reason. Practice can be a relaxing form of Zen like concentration, so much like archery it is unreal.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on being number 4,000.

You will find plenty of good advice here. I would recommend that you try making a couple before buying, then you will know what to buy and will understand what's gone into the slingshot. If you like OTT, I recommend A+ Slingshots' Rough and Ready. It's not rough, but it's tough and very affordable.

thanks again smitty, i am sorry i did not mean pea shooter, i meant pickle fork shooter, i am doing a lot of what you suggested, i will do the basics with the pickle fork and than once i see what i really need than i will do more practice and keep active on the forums and keep learning about the sport. i want so many of the really nice designs but really don't know much more the the wrist rocket which was ok, but i really did not like, plus i did not like its power, as you said different bands for different types of shooting, it has been a long time so it almost seems to me that it is the first time, your advice is very helpful. thank you.
