I Can't Seem To Be Able To Hammer Grip Anything

like the title says i just cant do it even with really weak bands
my wrist seems to cripple under the stress
i always grip more china stlye (i hope that is what it is called)

does anyone else have this problem? any advice?

I'm right-handed. I shoot a bow holding it in my left hand and release with my right. I have always shot a slingshot the same way. I see a lot of vids of people holding it in their right hand. Are they all left-handed or am I missing something? I had a fellow ask me one time why I shoveled left-handed. I told him I didn't know there was a difference. It feels natural for me to shoot a slingshot the way I shoot my bow and I don't think I'll change, but I was wondering.

Well, this week the apprenticeship school where I work opens, and thus ends my "summer of the slingshot". Won't be posting as much from now on -- at least new slingshots anyway.
But it's been a great weekend so far. Not only have I been having a blast shooting my new "Boston Blacky," which shoots like a dream, but Skit Slunga, who is having severe problems with his shoulders (it's both shoulders, now), has sent me his two latest slingshots and asked me to shoot them for him and post a little something here. So here goes.

The first one, we have seen before. It's his "Blacktail" from Hogan's Casting. I banded it up with some Black TheraBand that he gave me a while back. and really enjoyed shooting it.
Here it is with its first victim:

And here it is alone. A vry nice looking slingshot.

It's a small slingshot, but the weight and solidity of the metal makes it shoot like a bigboy. Set up like this, it's a smooooth shooter.

As I did yesterday with "Boston Blacky," I set up a target at 10 yards and shot 10 rounds of 3/8 steel at it. Did better with this one than with mine! Definitely a more accurate frame for me.

The other one that Skit got was a custom made chinese slingshot from Danny. I named it the beast, because that's what it is. It was too big for my hands -- and I have famously big ones. Skit must be built like a gorilla! Anyway here is a picture. I think it's a nice looking piece.

Because of the size, I just couldn't seem to hold it squarely out in front of me, I was always canting it a little one way or the other.
It is a nice slingshot, though. Here's a picture of it with two of its more diminutive cousins:

Well there you have it. Also Skit has asked me to pass them around. Who wants to try them next?

Natural Gum Rubber for bands???

I have seen many on here mention they like/prefer Natural Gum Rubber for their flat bands. I have found several places to purchase it and it is very inexpensive. My question is what size am i looking for. I see it sold in 1/16", 1/8", thick and up. I assume 1/16??

Slingshoot Butterfly Style Slo-mo Fork Hit

I was shooting my new Black Walnut Ergo slingshot Butterfly stye, with double blue therabands. Really to hard to pull for me. I caught a fork hit with a clay (kitty litter) ball. I thought it looked cool, so video below. I changed to single blue bands later in the day and it was much more fun to shoot.

Okay, so I've had a guy ask a few questions about tubes and flats... I'll post one of the more helpful for everybody ones.

Question: How do you tie the tubes so they shoot as well as bands?

Answer: Well, you can use tubes exactly the same... and you don't even have to tie them to the fork!

Looking at the front of the slingshot, the side facing away from you when shooting...
1) take a rounded off piece of wire, nail or as shown a welding rod end...
anything that's small and strong enough but won't puncture or cut the tubing will probably do fine:

2) Fold about 2 inches of the tube over it

3) Carefully push it into the hole

4) Push it through about a half an inch

5) Pull out the wire leaving the folded tube end intact

6) Pull the short folded tube end over the fork

7) Snap the end over the top and even both sides up

8) Make sure the pouch sits naturally flat

9) Looking at the backside of the slingshot
(the side that faces towards you when shooting) make sure it is tight and even

10) Lightly pull the tubes over the top and check for eveness

Your slingshot is now rigged with tubes to shoot just like you would with flats

Take it out and shoot it... works like a charm!

I've been shooting slingshots since I was 8 years old. I'm 57 now and still love them. I first started out using rocks and pebbles with a coat hanger slingshot (my first slingshot). Not bad for very short distances. Then I graduated to marbles when I learned of money. Accuracy was a lot more consistent. I collected my pennies each week from any left over allowance and any other means to get some change and bought bags of marbles-5 cents for the small bag and 10 cents for the larger one-"Cats Eye" was the name. These were my favorite ammo for many years. I also at that time (teenage-early 20's) had a collection of steel balls (along with a growing collection of slingshots) that I would use only for hunting (yes I used to hunt). I also had lead balls that were used for bigger game-rabbits,muskrats,ducks (never did get a duck). I was very stingy with the steel and lead-they were tough to come by. When I went to my first tournament,3/8" steel balls were the standard ammo. I used them with pretty good success. I then tried 7/16" and 12mm (Blue Skeens favorite size). I liked them too. Saunders had a tournament in Las Vegas in 1974 and it was won by Mr. Norm Echdale who used and swore by 1/2" steel balls. I tried them too and used them at last years tournament. I have used 1/2" for around a year now and just am not satisfied with the results. I do better with 3/8". The further distances are better with 1/2" (carries better) but I like the 3/8" all around. I gave the bigger stuff a try but the 3/8" is where I'll stay. I feel I can use a thinner gauge rubber and shorter cut with less draw and more speed, a smaller pouch, and I feel I have more control ( less shaking with a lighter cut of rubber). Then again, I use many different slingshots so why not all kinds of ammo? I'm just slingshot crazy! Really though I was wondering what everyone else prefers to shoot and some reasons why.Thanks! Greetings to all,

Thought I would share some of the things I'm doing as a novice shooter.

I recently purchased a King Cat SS from Jack Koehler and I'm getting prepared for the East Coast Championships.
After shooting the KCSS and adjusting and re-adjusting the sighting system I've decided that this will be
my SS of choice in tournaments. i was about to give up on the sights before it finally worked for me and boy does it work
well.

I must give all the credit to Jack for his online guidance in helping me with aiming technique, sight system adjustments,
and many other tips I can use during my pratice sessions. Not to metion his book has been a HUGE help!

One thing that rings true and I believe Smitty on this board says it well is, "Practice and then practice some more."
I've been at this now for less than 2 months. I knew right off from shooting a SS made from Gary Miller that I was a natural
at accuracy. It just clicked with me for some reason. With that being said, I'm motivated more than ever now to practice
to become the BEST there is at tournaments.

Last week I shot 99 out of 100 with my KCSS at a 3" diameter target that flips around when hit directly. Actually, I hit it 100
out of 100 times but being my own worst critic I didn't count one of the shots because it didn't hit the target directly but I did
hit it.

I'm no pro at this (yet, LOL!) but as a novice here's some things I'm doing to hone my skills:

1) I practice every day.

2) 50 shots per day minimum. Goal is 100 per day.

3) Increasing my endurance levels by timing my total time for 100 shots. Believe me, when I hit 99 out of 100
shots my focus was off the charts. Sweating profusely and fighting fatique. Each week I go a little longer to increase
my endurance.

4) I have my son and wife try to distract me while shooting. I want to be good under pressure or not.
They shout at me. Jump up and down waving their arms around, hollering the whole time. Try this to
perfect your focus and concentration.

5) Doing a wrist strengthening regimen with static holds as in shooting position. Also, I practice shooting
with wrist weights wrapped around my wrist. Increasing my thumb strength and endurance with timed pinch holds
with LifeLine tubes. 10 times stronger than the bands I use to shoot with.

6) I practice in the rain. The heat and on windy days.

Hope I haven't missed anything here. Above all, I get out there and pratice shooting!

I practice mentally picturing myself hitting my target every time. I even imagine the sound it makes when I hit the target.

I did not realize the physical and mental demands of this sport until I hit 99 out of 100 last week. I'm not in anyway
saying it was easy. Just staying focused and concentrating like I was really taxed me in the end. WOW!

I hope some of what I shared here may help others.

Question to naturals experts

Hello,

i do love naturals, and some here in this forum make wanderfull ones.

How do you remove the bark from the fork, and how do you polish them?
I heared that some of you use a bit of breaking glass?
Any advices are welcome.

Also, i am used to dry my forks in microwave oven, with a little glass of water, and i am very pleased with it. I put 30sec full power, let cool down for 60sec, check the weight, and then 30 sec, cool down, check again and so on.
When the weight don't move anymore, it is done.

I had the chance to find a nice oak fork today, i think it will make a beautifull catty

Shooting with Boston Blacky

So, this morning I banded up Boston Blacky (my new catty) with tapered doubled black thera band. And it shot very very nice. Handslaps were vicious with 3/8 steel so I moved up to 7/16. Still handslaps. 1/2 inch behaved nicely, no handslaps. So I set up a target.

I decided to post my target even though, before I did this, I had only put around 8 or 10 rounds through her, so the bands weren't broken in yet. Here's the result.

Then after another 10 minutes or so of shooting look at what happened.

This is the third set of black thera band bands that have broken after making under 50 shots. What am I doing wrong???? I tie it at the pouch with soft cotton twine using a constrictor knot, same as I do with any other bands. HELP ME!!

First of all: Good news everybody, i'm still alive and crafting

After getting my old slingshots banned from belgian competition, I had to make a new one to be able to participate again.
As my new connection has been approved and tested, I could make a new kind of slingshot now.

Well, I've gone for the trough the fork style, with a ergo grip, made for my hand and shooting style only.

This monster is made from 22mm miranti plywood. I call it monster, because its HUGE compared to my usual slingshots.

The parts are glued and screwed, and the fork is rock solid. Its also quite heavy, but I like that. As usual, light target bands.

I did however stumble across some extremely talents young rappers who have deliberately decided to refuse the myriad of offers they receive from the industry because their music actually has a message - as opposed to a moron's like Lil' Wayne - and they prudently realise that having more people invested financially in their music will put them in a situation where they will be perpetually forced to molest their lyrics! They mainly talk about political and social injustices.

A shot at the ready

Hi all

Its been a while since I posted here but I still read everything and it all looks great! I had something I thought I might share. I shoot at crows ALOT. Crows are smart birds, the recogonize inidividual humans and are quick to raise an alarm. Hence they see me coming a mile away. They usually take flight as soon as they see me start fiddling with my slingshot. So I came up with a way to preload my slingshot but not have to hold the pouch at the ready, that why I can lay it on the seat beside me while I am riding. I started pinching the shot in the pouch with a springloaded clothespin. I know this will work for shot up to a half an inch. It still takes me a second to remove the pin and get ready to shoot, but it is better than trying to load while the enemy is watching. Has anyone else tried this or some other means of keeping a shot at the ready.

For those who don't know, I have a Christmas project that involves building custom slingshots for my sons, brothers and certain friends. I have finally settled (almost) on a design, and the plan all along was to make them from mahogany. Two days ago, disaster struck! I had just finished shaping and rough sanding a frame when it slipped out of my hand, dropped 3 feet and broke off the left fork. I have a couple of frames cut from the same board, and they have been performing just fine, even took some hard fork hits with little or no visible damage. I think that this was just a freak and there was already a crack in the wood, and am not ready to abandon the use of mahogany just yet. I plan to test each cut before final shaping and sanding by mounting it on a frame and applying force. I'm thinking 50 pounds of pull on each fork in four directions should provide a reasonable safety margin.

I would welcome any thoughts or advice. The last thing I want is for someone to get hurt because one of my frames broke.

Well, I carved out my favorite ergo design, and since I like shooting with the bands being vertical... it's called the VERGO, for vertical ergonomic.
After I finished carving and photoing it, I rigged it up with a set of field bands from Bill Herriman... using a .50 caliber steel ball, shooting from 20 meters at a 7.5 ounce coke can... I hit it with the very first shot (Hoo-Rah), and out of the 30 total (shot before it got to dark) I hit 20 out of 30. yes... I LIKE!

Special thanks goes out to Paul for cutting out the blank with his bandsaw (had to buy a diamond blade just to get through it)

Saunders revisited.

A while back I did a review of all my slingshots (I have about double that amount now). In that review I stated how much I liked the Saunders but had some trouble aiming them. After taking another look at these slingshots I have determined that these are probable the most accurate slingshots you can buy. Hands down.

I know some of you do not like the big starship slingshots and prefer wooden handcrafted slingshots, and trust me I love those and naturals too. However, the falcon 2 from Saunders is built for precision. This slingshot is very accurate. The brace allows you to hold with a semi open hand to assure the slingshot is in the same position every shot.

The hawk is also an awesome little slingshot. It is only slightly less accurate than the falcon 2.

The quick change band system on these tops any other method of band or tube attachment. You can quickly adjust the length of the bands if more or less draw is needed.

The Saunders flat bands are some of the best on the market. These things will outlast even tubes. Seriously. I changed tubes on a tubular slingshot twice before I had to change the bands on a Saunders. And I think I shot the Saunders MORE! They are also super fast and even more so if shortened.

p.s. I love slingshots. I find good qualities in every slingshot I own. I did however want to give credit where credit is due. Saunders makes a great product.

Well, I managed to ruin the finish on this one. Was researching wood finishes and came across the idea of mixing equal parts linseed oil, turpentine, and spar varnish. But it was supposed to be BOILED linseed oil, and all I had was some odorless paint thinner. Long story short, after 3 coats, I had to spend hours trying to strip the gunky film off. Didn't have the patience to bring it back to a nice natural finish again, so I just painted it black.
The idea of this pocket shooter was to get wide enough fork tips to fit 1" bands without folding, so the opening is only and inch and five-eighths.
This is the last slingshot I'll get from that piece of poplar pallet wood I had.

Just a few pics of one I just recently finished.
It was customized by request. This one is going to a fine retired Marine who wanted it in green, and with the Cherokee word "Currahee" lettered on it. "Currahee" was one platoons "rally cry," it means "Stand Alone!!"

I could only find the stain color I was looking for in an acrylic, so I used a water base polyacrylic to clear coat it as well.
I really enjoyed making this one!!

tubes on WRP (not a jab at flatbands)

Whenever I have used tubes on the WRP, they have failed (torn) where the tube is held by the cam. That is the only place they tear, but the tubes still last at least twice as long as any flatbands I have tried.

Well, yesterday I discovered a way to use the Trumark white pouch attachment pieces to attach tubes to naturals from a post on jackshed. I have adapted this idea to the WRP.

No more tearing where the tube goes into the pinching cam system, because the tube is not in the pinching cam system.... an extra pouch is.

This should make these tubes last forever.

I know so many shooters here use flatbands and my impression is they would give up slingshots if they had to use tubes or rubberbands.

I, however, like the longevity of the tubes. Now as soon as my #32 rubberband gun ammo comes in, I will be using those chained rubber bands with the JMPLSNT method on this WRP as well.

I will only use tubes or rubberbands from now on and would give up slingshots if I had to use flatbands.

So rather than taking this post as a jab at flatbands, I intend it to be a posting showing how you can get an idea from one place and
modify it to good use in another application.

Hole size for band attachment

I want to use the hole through the fork attachment method with my tube bands and was wondering what the hole size should be that the band goes through? should it be a bit smaller than the band so it is a snug fit, does that wear too much on the band? should be it a bit larger so it slides? just curious as i have never used this method of attachment. thanks for your help, Dan.

Just wanted to say that I got the PS2 in the post this morning. It's a lovely looking slingshot and the finish on it is first rate. I've never used latex bands before and I must say that I like them. I got the standard bands fitted and I'm very comfortable with the pull on them (I think it's about 14-15lbs at 29"). I can shoot with it all day without tiring. The pouch looks very bling too and the leather is very soft and thicker than I'm used to using - not sure what leather it is though. I had a few problems indexing the 0.44 cal lead balls in the pouch and I think that I'm going to punch the hole a little larger. After shooting about 100 shots, a mixture of 0.44 cal lead, 3/8" and 1/2" steel, I can say that it's an accurate slingshot. Perhaps, that's not the best way to describe it...let's say it encourages you to shoot accurately. I have my target box set up in my garage and although I'm only shooting at a distance of 4-5m, I'm hitting a 2" square consistently at that distance.

I did find that the slingshot is a little wide across where I grip it on the forks. I have small hands and perhaps I would have been better off with the PS1. I found that there was a bit of pressure on my first finger where I was gripping the fork. I think that if I fitted the stronger set of bands that I ordered from Perry, it would get uncomfortable after a while. As it is with the regular latex bands, it's fine.

So overall, I'm happy with the PS2. More than anything, it looks wonderful. Finish is really, really nice. The gloss poly finish gives the slingshot a really high class feel. It feels good in the hands and all the curves are great to look at. But I do think that the PS2 is probably suited to a larger hand than mine, but it's not so prohibitive that I can't shoot with it though. And I like the latex bands too - make a nice change to therabands. I also ordered 2 sets of butterfly style bands and I look forward to playing with those. Not had the chance yet but I'm sure that I will soon.

It was a pleasure to do business with Perry. He's a gent and is very helpful and is great with his communications too. If you haven't bought a slingshot from Perry, I would recommend that you do. Even if you live in the UK - Perry looked after me very well. Thanks!

hello everyone. my name is colt. here's my slingshot story. for a long time i've been interested in firearms, airguns(modification), as well as general shopinterests. so a couple of years ago i get curious and look for a slingshot community and find very little. i check again a couple months later and here i am with a large community and a reliable source of high quality rubber. i've been lurking for a while, quietly attempting to make a decent slingshot to share, and after recently buying a bigger gas torch i think i have something you'll enjoy seeing. i don't really call it this but i guess you could, here is the "ram" shot. *note the ram horn shaped band attatchment points. it's my variation on the chinese variety of slingshot and i think it is a pretty cool design. it's made from 5/16" steel rod. the handle construction is 550 cord wrapping and to fill some space i used some 1/2" pvc flattened and clamped between the rod. i hope you find my work appealing. i'll explain the band attatchment method in more depth later on.

Clay balls, and flatbands !!!!

Well I made a bunch O' clay balls, been a shooting them a lot outa my Dankungs, they work good, accurate to mebbe 15 yards, ran outa ammo for my A+, PS1 with the original bands,(my draw is 31") so shot bout couple hundred of the clay balls== AARRGGHhhh= that's a NO-NO->
DANG- my bands are starting to tear- got bad stretch marks on the bottom bands, and are looking bad, still shootable with some heavier ammo, but no more of the lightweight stuff for my A+, they come out fast, , and the noise they make, I believe is the bands slapping the fork as they go over, at least that's what they look like from the markings on them, with heavier ammo it shoots much quieter, at least this what I'm a thinking.
I did notice that on the Dankungs(same 31" draw) there is no indication of any wear or abnormal markings on the bands, seems like they will handle almost any size ammo without any adverse affects, cause I do shoot bout anything that will fit in the pouch=large or small,

I really got it yesterday, but I was at work, so I really got it today ! Ya follow ? I am in hog heaven with this super fine slingshot ! I wanted to share it with "the guys" (and gals) on the forum. I also received a slingshot forum decal and it is residing on the back glass of my jeep. The glass is black and the type is white...perfect.
Anyway, if you don't have one of Flatbands' slingshots, you are missing out on slingshot nirvana, as well as a sure collectors' item for any enthusiast ! He set me up with some target bands and a pouch made for 3/8" steel and it shoots great at 25 yards too! If the spouse says you have too many slingshots just say, "yes, but I need a slingy thingy or I will look like a dork !

Bent Rod Slingshot

Some time back I said I was going to make a bent rod slingshot from a copper grounding rod. Unfortunately the "copper" rod turned out to be copper plated steel and I don have the equipment to bend it. So, I ordered some 5/16 inch stock (2 aluminum, 1 brass, and 1 stainless steel) and today bent up the first. It used just over 12 inches of T6061 aluminum rod, so by a slight adjustment to the size, I will be able to get 2 more from the first rod. Tools were a vice, 2 large screws with eyes, a 6 inch length of 3/8 inch pipe and a hacksaw. Next I will fashion a block of wood to slip between the "handle" portion and polish the aluminum. I slipped on an old set of Daisy bands and it shoots great. Here's a picture of the raw fork. I'll post more as I get it looking better.

I made a very big starship (30 inch fork extension) and fitted it with light draw weight theraband gold. I then put the rubber in the oven and heated it as much as I dared and did a few shots immediately. The rubber cools down very quickly.

Ammo: 0.451 inch lead ball, 138 grains

Unheated bands: 302 fps, 28 ft/lbs, 38 joules

Heated bands: 325 fps, 32 ft/lbs, 43 joules

And had I used larger balls (say up to 0.7 inch lead) i believe I would have gotten significantly higher energy.

Can you make a video on using split lead shot? Similar to slit shot weight for fishing lures, take a soft lead ball and cut deep slits into the ball, but still have a sphere shape I'd like to know if the impact will allow the lead to deform along the slits flaring out to maximize damage. You can have different configurations in the slit depth and different orientations of the slits.

Lastly,

Can you make a sling shot that uses coil springs instead of flatbands?

I have finally got around to completing many slingshots after having given several away to family and friends. The colors are a hit. I love the naturals and have some ready but gravitated to making some with color. I wanted to have some color in my collection and it grew from there.

I am making these with the following features.

My main purpose for crafting the ones, the style of the colored ones, is to set them up with tubes (1745 or 2040) and a magnetized pouch of my design and manufacture, especially for BBs and 1/4 inch. I have had very positive feedback!!!! WAIT 'TIL YOU TRY ONE!

All the color slingshots and a few naturals are made from baltic birch plywood, a high cabinet grade plywood.

All in these photos typically have 5 coats of wood flooring urethane on them. This is a durable product as it is designed for abuse under foot.

They are designed with smooth edges to help get the most from your tubes or bands.

The prices will be no less than $30 US Dollars plus shipping ($5 in US) and I am not sure if the tubes with the magnetized pouch will be in that price.

It has a heartwood, Maple center, with 1/4 inch, spalted maple sides, and the palm swell is beautifully fiqured, spalted maple.

Lately I've been kicking around the idea of producing a wooden Arrow Shooter. I'm not advocating big game hunting with one....just small game and target shooting as I recommend for all slingshots. I've made and tried a few shooters through the years and have recently received permission from Jaybird to produce and sell a version of his design if I wish to do so.
Today I kept thinking about it as I worked on other orders like I usually do, and this simple modification just struck me out of the blue.

On a break I took my Baby BB Shooter and put on a set of my "Ultra Power" Bands, completely palmed it up with a firm grip, canted it somewhere between 45 and 90 degrees and began shooting a 145 gr. tipped, feather fletched, 2216 Easton GG II arrow with the greatest of ease and success right out of the pouch. Because the forks are so low and the throat so narrow it didn't need any arrow rest except the lower fork when canted. It shoots great as is, but I might put a self adhesive arrow "rug" rest like I use to use on my recurve bows when I shoot traditional "off the shelf."
Having been an archer since childhood as well, I can tell you that combining two of my loves was just a blast!!!!
The arrow has a special "knob" nock manufactured by me, but everything else is stock. It really is crucial to have a positive grip in the pouch. I did eventually round off two spots on my BB Shooter for more comfort, but it was not necessary, just nice to do since I could.
This is truly something anyone can do. It opens up a whole new venue for slingshots. Unless I am mistaken, I believe this would make this the strongest currently marketed slingshot arrow shooter. Hope everyone has fun watching!!! Please use extra safety if you try it. It really turns my Baby BB Shooter into a different animal altogether!!! Who would have thought so much could be done with "So Little"!!!

UPDATE: 9/210 I liked this grip better today. Still shooting the arrows great!!!

well here is a pic of our new slingshots... from Tom "bunnybuster"... these are waaaay cool.. the 2 naturals are for my boys and are made from birch, the fork is made from 120 year old black walnut.. it is a beauty.

i have been shooting 3/8 ball bearings out of mine and the boys are shooting 1/4 ball bearings, out of theirs.. they're a blast to shoot... both my boys being avid archers, took to it no problem..

Thanks Joerg, your videos are awesome and your designs are even better! This slingshot was so simple to make, and seemed to powerful that I had to throw a few buck into some hardware and built it! Unfortunately my first attempt with modeling clay didn't work out. I'm planning another handle soon.

But even without the handle I had to take a few shots at a can! Well my first pouch was very thin at the ends and ripped fairly quickly... I got a few shots off with this one before it ripped! I obviously need some better leather? I rode with this jacket for years, good thing I never tested it on the asphalt!!

I assume my holes made with a knife contributed to the further ripping of the pouch? I need a leather punch, but they seem cheap enough.

WEll , I got a nice surprise in the mail yesterday, a genuine first production run (#1) Smitty Special! Smitty and myself traded frames. This new frame of his is AWESOME! I put a set of fast bands on it right off and took a few shots with it this morning. I have shot a ton of slingshots over the years,but I can't remember when I ever took a "never shot before" slingshot and nailed a can 7 times in a row right from the get go! The distance was only 28 feet but still,that is something in my book! Usually they(new ones) take a bit to "find the range". Smitty has designed this frame so it can be shot in any number of styles. I was using "Gangsta" and man this frame reeks of Gangsta!!!! This is no "Pocket Shooter" Thick,pretty big and very solid- looks like Multiplex construction and beautifully finished too!. I love the feel of her in my big old mitt! Job well done Smitty! I really like this Slingshot and will be bringing it to the Long Island Shoot on September 11th-expect more orders Smit man! Ok so im not sure about you but i have problems storing my ammo when im on the move whether im target shooting or hunting ammo always ends up left in my pockets escpecially small 6mm where theve fallen into the seems of my trouser pockets so i came up with this i made it from a very thick branch off a tree in my garden ill try and find out what it is called
i de-barked the part of the branch i was going to use and then used a very large drill bit to get the whole in the middle. it can hold 30+ 6mm steel shot.
i then started whittling? in the middle to make it nice and smooth. I then cut a smaller piece of the branch off from furthe up so it had less girth than the whole that i had made previoulsy, after this i found the smallest drill bit that i could find and drilled a whole threw the smaller piece, i then attatched a small piece of lace threw this whole so it would make it easier to take off the lid
If anyone wants one of these they're £3,$4.60, 3.60 Euros or i will swop for a bandset

My arrow shooter

I thought I would try to make an arrow shooter after reading morks post. I drilled an 1/8 in hole at the top of the forks and ran a 1/8 steel rod thru them I also used a couple of wood feet for small boxs as arrow guides. I used one of my lexan over the top shooters. I used a bamboo arrow that wieghed 515 grains with no feathers I slipped a piece of tubbing over the end of the arrow to hang on to. I used suggestions from the forum the wood guides and the tubbing on the arrow.
I set up the slingshot with double bands a 1 inch and a 3/4 inch non tapered measured 6 inches from the fork to the knot. When I checked them on my scales they pulled 28 pounds at 32 inches. I found I could not pull to 32 inches gripping the pouch so I gripped the arrow itself then I could pull full distance with no problem. After shooting for a few minutes I set up the crono and did some testing. It is tough to get a good clean shot but when I did I was surprised I could get 125 feet per second with the 515 grain arrow. I think if you shoot the 250 grain arrow that chief aj shoots you could get some decent speeds. There are a lot of the old 45 pound self bows that shoot 130 feet per second and the owners were very pleased with them. After all this I will stick to my longbow for shooting arrows much more acurate.
You can see from the pictures I have one of chiefs fishing slingshots that I tested but I could not get over 111 fps with it. It is 9 1/2 inches from the pouch to the arrow rest where mine is only 7 inches maybe that made the difference.

I got ZDP-189 (Dan's) Polyurethane resin cast of his new creation called "Scallops" in the mail last week. But I have been so busy, I haven't had time to shoot it very much. Well, this morning I got a chance to spend a little time with it. Right up front, I want to say that once Hogans gets this thing off to market in metal, I think it will become an instant classic. It's a very efficient and attractive slingshot. Good for target shooting and hunting, and can slip easily into a pocket too. What more do you want in a slingshot?
Here's mine:

The way Dan set it up, it is very smooth shooting. The double blue bands have just enough zip in them to shoot at cans from 10-15 yards with good accuracy and no strain at all on the hands. I'm planning on doing one of those online tournament posts with it soon.

Here is the first video from the new garden!

I tested the impact of 16 mm lead (made with the Bellsofhythe 12 shot mould) against the ubiquitous coconut and then on to a supermarked duck, still in the plastic coat.

The ammo went through the duck, even lengthwise.

Popped over to see my dad today and showed him a couple of the board cut slingshots - one with single theraband gold bands on and the other one with black butterfly bands on. I let him have a play and he was transformed back to his youth when he made what we would call natural slingshots with inner tube bands. He then popped into his shed and brought out a piece of inch thick plywood and told me that he would make a better one than mine!! Fantastic!!! Just thought that I'd share the news.

Yesterday I posted this little combo-plinker along with a natural, but it wasn't finished. Well, I couldn't sleep last night so I went downstairs and finished it. As you can see it is designed to handle Flat-Bands OTT as well as Chinese tubes.
I really hate applying varnish to dry wood, so I used Minwax stain/sealer first. Then, because I wanted to finish it up, I applied about 5 coats of a clear acrylic spray I have. It is a really tough finish.
Tubed it up this morning and shot with it a while. Shoots very good. Lots of fun, and will fit nicely into a pocket for my walks.

I like it a lot, hope you will too.

The use of the leather for attaching rubber bands, by Nick and jmplsnt, kept me thinking this weekend. I have shot through three different sets of flat-bands this weekend, all broke at the pouch. I take a lot of care to tie them to last too. Even used rubber to tie some at the pouch, but it usually ends up the same. After a few hundred shots the band breaks. When I thought of someones' child getting a slingshot from me to shoot and then coming into the house crying, because the bands broke within a few days of getting the slingshot, bothered me.
The information Nick and jmplsnt supplied for using leather to tie on rubber bands seemed like something that could be used to adapt tubes to a flat-band slingshots safely and provide an alternative for shooting with the same slingshot. Then, while making up a new center hole pouch the light came on. I haven't shot with it yet, but it seems very promising to me.
I'm wondering what the folks here think about this. Just remember my technique is a bit sloppy, but I learned from the first fork tip and did the second one better.

My gelatin tests are very successful on youtube. I must say that I never expected such great results beforehand.

Then I was asked by German TV to make a huge block of gelatin for a comparison of a longbow against a musket. The musket ball was a 3/4 inch lead ball, travelling at over 500 m/s. It lifted the 160 lbs block 4 inches off the table and the impact looked spectacular in slow motion - but the ball did not go through the block, penetraded about three feet maybe.

The lead ball was massively flatened.

Then I tested the slingshot, same ammo. I shot the ball through the entire block! Strange.

Then I saw a Mythbusters episode where they tested firearm shots into water. The muzzleloaders did best! Even the .50 Browning was weak in comparison - the bullet shattered on impact and was harmless after one foot.

So slow and heavy does the job! Gelatin and flesh both contain 80%+ water, and the impact of a fast bullet onto the surface of the water creates massive resistance, the bullet spends most of its energy at that point.

It works like jumping into a pool, from three feet it is easy, from 10 yards it is painful and from 30 yards it is outright dangerous, the surface feels like concrete.

I believe that this is true for real body hits too. Once the bullet has penetrated the skin, it travels very easily through the tissue, only bones will stop it eventually.

High guys I want to try some of the best tubing available, I'm looking for a blend of velocity and toughness, preferably as fast as possible whilst being more durable than Theraband Gold, also it must: have a draw length of 7lb to 10lb - so that it has a draw weight of 14lb to 20lb when made into a band-set, be available in lengths of 5 or 10 metres and be reasonably priced, and available for shipping to the UK.

Also I really, really want to get my hands on the type of leather Perry and Martin are using, and the tools required to fashion pouches out of them. I'm willing to pay above market value for them!

Got my Target bands from Tex today and immediately banded two SSs. I could not be more pleased with their performance. Here's a shot of the two SSs. The one on the left is one of my first acceptable boardcuts, and cut from mahogany. The larger one is the latest evolution of my Christmas project. Both are about 5.5 inches tall. The small one measures just under 2 inches between forks and the larger is 2.5 inches and made from plywood. They both shoot great with Tex's bands. Next I'm going to try some Fields.

I finished this earlier today, its based on the drawing that Tex posted a few weeks back. The ony real difference is the inside of the forks I prefer not to round mine off, just a personal choice.

I am really pleased with the way its turned out, its made from a nice Elm plank I got from a wood turner.

I went looking for some natural forks today and found one i took it home and stripped the bark off it i then put it in a sealable freezer bag and put it in the microwave on full power for 5 lots of 25 seconds this dries it out very well, i then started sanding and filling it down, it is now very smooth. I dont know what tree i took this from, ill try and find out tommorow, it is very srong anyway. I enjoyed doing this so much im going to try and find some more forks tommorow

I've just about got the hang of shooting butterfly today. Must admit, I'm not opening my arms fully - nearly there but I'm getting pretty consistent shots with it. Aiming is slightly shifted from the norm for me but I can stretch the bands and get them to touch my cheek as I'm aiming. At first, I had glove on and had my fingers well away from the forks but now it's feeling normal. I'm very excited as you can tell.
One question - can you shoot butterfly with any style of slingshot? Or is there an optimum design that helps with this shooting style?

Hey everyone. My name is Arson and I'm a Firefighter in Indiana. A few weeks ago I took my brother, his son, and my cousin to the Manistee River Trail in Michigan. On a whim, I purchased a Daisy Wrist Rocket for my Nephew to practice with on the trip. He gets bored easy, and I wanted something for him to do. I had one when I was his age and my brother and I had hours of fun with it. Anyway, it was the hit of the trip. Every time we stopped it was a competition time to see who was the best. Great time.
I want to step it up a bit with performance and power, and really make a slingshot part of my essentials kit. I could really get into hunting with it. This Forum has some great information on it thanks to all of you. Thanks.

Optimal streching ratio with Thera Band

According to you, what is the optimum strech ratio, with speed and accuracy prior to longevity?

My current big project is designing (or stealing a design) for a nice, simple board-cut that will be attractive enough to please my sons,. brothers, and friends who are going to get one for Christmas. Even so, I can't resist making naturals and thought I'd share the ones I have in shootable condition so far. For size comparison, the small one that is wrapped with string measures 5 inches from the bottom to a line between the fork tops. The two on the left are cut from the trees in my back yard and the rest are Tamarind. I gave the red one away yesterday.

So this is my new shooter. I bought the original wood in portugal for 3 euros off some guy in the street but the wood was a horrible colour and stained possibly by the sun?
Anyway i wrapped the one fork in a green string which is where i put my thumb also i wrapped the bottom in a fine grey string aswell the rest of it is wrapped in electrical tape which i like the fiinish on im not quite sure why though to be fair. The Thera Band Gold were given to me by a very genorous member of our comunity (you know who you are) the pouch was off a old Black Widow. I know that it is not the nicest looking slingshot but it is very accurate and also very powerful

I continue to experiment with black thera band.

My band set was begining to tear this afternoon( 3cm non tapered) , so i made a new one this evening.

I looked with a lot of attention torsten in his video (his my master for the moment with butterfly style ) and i saw how he can easily pull his band set.

So i decided to make a lighter band set: i tried 3 cm at the fork to 2 cm at the pouch and 30 cm long. The tapering is about 30%, what ZDP recommand

A the same time, i made a ultra tiny pouch, inspired by baumstamm ones, in a old archery glove, made of thin leather

I went out before the darkness arrive, to do some tests with my 16mm marbles:

Waw!!! : the speed was higher, but also, i gain a LOT in stability, and then, in accuracy!!!!

In butterfly style too, the last centimeters count, and now i can easily draw my slingshot to the max (160 cm)

Well it's been raining here for days. Today it's drying up, though, and I can go out and shoot. Today I got Dan's yellow "Scalloped" slingshot. And Monday I got Fish's Ergo2 Hunter.
My hand is killing me from shooting the Hunter (verrrrrry powerful), so I only took a few shots with the "Scalloped" (extremely smooth and accurate). I am going to rest my hands for the remainder of the day. Tomorrow I will try and post some pics and tell you all about my experiences with these new slingshots -- although not much needs saying about the Hunter, right?

Now several members of the slingshot community, like our own Joerg,have explored the idea of using specially adapted pouches to shoot multiple projectiles simultaneously, to increase the chance of hitting the target, in the exact same way a shotgun does. Now, as far as I know, no one has tried this technique with projectiles heavier than 4.5mm lead (0.541g,) or with an extended draw technique, like the butterfly.

...So as you can well imagine the results have been underwhelming, (Noone has actually ventured to measure the velocities achieved, but we can safely assume they were below 80m/s - so less kinetic energy than a RedRyder,) with the general consensus being that they would have no practical application in hunting - other than maybe for small mice.

Today I was arbitrarily struck by an idea, why stop at individual projectiles smaller than #BB shot? What about about Buck Shot like #1? With an extended butterfly draw and tapered Theraband Gold velocities in excess of 80m/s would theoretically be achievable.

Now let's say we could shoot #1(7.62mm/ 0.300" – 2.628g) shot at a velocity of 90m/s, that would achieve a 'muzzle' energy of 10.64J or 7.85ft/lb taking the density of lead into account I think 5 or 6 would easily kill small pests like rabbits, squirrels and feral pigeons. Please note that: of these species I've only ever killed one squirrel, and thatwas taken several years ago using a Barnett Black Widow and a single 9.525mm (3.556g) steel ball bearing, taken with a head-shot from 5 yards- it died instantly.

Anyway the thought of me being able to legally procure Buckshot here in theUK is laughable, especially considering I own neither a shotgun nor an FAC – and even if I did, I don't have a chronograph. But our cousins over the North Atlantic can probably buy buckshot at their local supermarket!

Because of the recent controversy surrounding the taking of deer size game using HFX.Also because there seemed to be much confusion and unanswered questions as to the pull weight and energy of the HFX .I took it upon myself to procure and test the HFX.It was tested as sold straight from the box with no modifications of any type using standard arrows. I tested it with an open mind and no bias as to its possible potentials.
Upon my initial inspection it appeared to be a well crafted product.It had a good feel and weight in my hand.It appears to be constructed of a sturdy solid aluminum handle.It had a hard thin material covering that appeared to be shrink tubing.The rod for the forks was of one long piece wrapped to below and just inside .the handle .It appeared to be aluminum also and 1/4 inch thick. The arrow rest I thought was of a good design that was made to flip down when an arrow was shot and also to be held in the down position so that balls could be shot .The black tubes do appear to be heavier than most.
I was excited to get it home and begin testing.
Unfortunately those are the good points .I was extremely disappointed with my testing results.

The first thing I attempted to do was to shoot steel balls.They seemed to shoot very well.The bad part is the arrow rest flipped up after every shot and had to be repositioned down.It is a pain.
I then got three arrows of different weights. With the following weights of 372 grains,456 grains,and 559 grains.
I pulled each to a 28 inch draw .It was extremely difficult to draw the arrows as they did not want to stay on the rest.I tried several different drawing methods .The HFX is very difficult to use and is not for a beginner.I believe it would take a lot of practice to master its use just to keep the arrow on its rest.You can not concentrate on a target because it takes a great amount of concentration just to keep the arrow on the rest.
The next problem I encountered was the arrows fletching were being stripped from the first shot.After three shots one arrows fletchings were completely shredded and it was needing to be refletched.

DRAW WEIGHT AT 28 INCHES ......25 pound
TEST RESULTS:
372 grain arrow......................456 grain arrow ...................559 grain arrow
at 28 inches............................ at 28 inches..........................at 28 inches

Average feet per second three shots for each arrow :

117 fps.........................................115.5fps...................................111.1fps

Foot pounds generated:
11.31 ft lb........................................13.51 ft lb..................................15.32 ft lb

Below is a chart that is a guide line to the foot pounds needed to take various game taken from a bow web site.
All I can say to conclude is to let your concience be your guide in using this as a weapon for game larger then rabbits.

Anyone tried Kangaroo Leather for their pouches? It is 10 times stronger than cow leather, which would allow for a thinner pouch that would be more flexible and lightweight. That should mean a more accurate and faster shot.

Well I got my new leather in and some of it is kind of thick, while I was washing my hands and a pan to soak the leather in I sliced the palm of my hand wide open on a burr on the ding-dong pan. I thought it would be fun to post pics of thermometers showing how hot it is where you are at. The post can be from your car's thermometer , a bank's sign, the thermometer outside your house, or whatever. The temperature cannot be articicially inflated though. As an example, your car must have been moving directly prior to the image capture or the temerature would be higher than the actual air temperature. Another example is if your house thermometer is directly in the sun.

A trip to Austria with A+ Slingshots

I wanted to share a few pics and to tell you about the fun i had in Austria's alps mountains,
so I've been to Austria for the past month, and i brought two slingshots with me (thanks to Perry)

So the special thing about bringing the slingshot to there was that we could throw stones in water and see it jump,
crossed a 300 meter lake only by jumping on the water (Using Single Thera Gold Bands and A+ PS1 and a PS2 Double Thera Gold Bands),
or let my dog smell a stone, shoot it for hundreds of meters and watch how my dog is running and detects the stone

Well ive made something a bit differant for me, i tried not to make anything the same as anyone else, its made from Red Oak and has a soft wood palm swell to keep the weight down, ive also put a deep groove in the handle for my little finger, what feels really nice when i hold it, i didnt want to stain the wood so i got a block of homemade bees wax of the farmers wife, it has left the grain on the wood very smooth, i made it for target shooting in my garden, but couldnt help myself and hed to try it on the farm, got 2 crows and a rat, so im made up with it, it is made for my hand and feels really nice to shoot, ive fitted it with rings so i can shoot the thin tubes with it, and i use 8mm steel balls, cheers for looking, jeff.

For about 5 years there has been an anual event not far from my home called the wilderness gathering,its the premier bushcraft/survival show in England and attracts thousands as weekend and day visitors,this year hunter catapults had a stall there for the first time,it was a self made stall and need a few tweeks to get it perfect. we had our new corporate uniforms on and set up in just an hour,literally hundreds of folk visited the stall and our outdoor range,every person that tried a hunter baught one! the stall was open untill 1am daily and we were pleased to meet many folk that we knew from the various forums we are on.In total we sold over 80 hunter catapults and 6000 shot!
The show was a total success and we cant wait till next year,heres a few pics of our stall:

Amazing Black Thera Band

this week end, i received few rolls of black thera band, and this evening, i was able to test a new band set on my catty.

One layer, 3 cm non tapered (will do later) and 30 cm from fork to pouch.

I shoot 16 mm glass marble, full butterfly, and this rubber is unbelievable: it seems so weak, but what a speed achieved! i was really surprised.

I was training at 18 yards on a soda can, and i was too high most of the time, i have to train my brain to this new ballistic.

I shot a empty beer can at about 20 m (23 yards) with one of these 16 mm marble, and the can was penetrated both sides, very impressive!

Wish i had a chrony...

I have to make some experiments now, as i plan to shoot also .44 lead balls, and i think i will begin with 5 cm at the fork tapered to 3 cm at the pouch

Your two videos make a great comparison; your massive sit down, 2 arm and 2 leg draw vs your 3 meter 1 arm draw.

Joerg and Geko have nailed down the fact that a long light draw is much, much more efficient than a gut wrenching powerful draw.

What is the perfect draw length?

I believe that the Law of Diminishing Return kicks in between 160 cm and 200 cm.

I am building a 175 cm butterfly slingshot from telescoping steel tubes.

Compact for carrying and relatively light weight.

Also, the first draw will be to half 175 cm and it should be fairly easy to do.

The complete draw to 175 cm will be either a 2 hand horizontal draw or a foot/feet on the fork plus a 2 hand vertical draw.

I finished the very simple, but effective, slide locking mechanism yesterday.

It is just a simple overgrown screen door pneumatic door closing brake.

In this application, it will be spring loaded.

So far so good.

In your opinion is 175 cm draw about right?

Coconut Meets The Pickle Fork

Have been wanting to see if my shooter could rip through a coconut similar to Jorges Impressive Video. With some trepidation I set up a coconut against my back fence being carful if there would be a shot that might return nothing would get hit. Got my Pickle Fork Shooter equiped with the bands that I rave about and I let er rip first with 3/8 steel ball and then with 5/8 marble since these are two of my favorite shots. If you look closely at the exit side of the 3/8 you will see the steel ball because at this point is where it was resting against the picket of the fence and even the fence board had a dent otherwise the steel ball would have kept going. The 3/8 steel did not move the target at all. The 5/8 marble spent a greater amount of energy on the target actually plowing through and spliting the target and causing it to move out of its place. This experiment was performed at a distance of 15 feet. Made both shot Butterfly Style.

I have read on here that hand slap generally occurs if you are shooting ammo that is too light for the bands that are attached to the slingshot. Well Ive been playing around and I've got a pair of single theraband gold bands. I have attached them to 2 differently designed boardcut slingshots. I shot 12mm lead balls and I repeatedly get hand slapped by one slingshot.

I have quickly mocked up a protector to wear on my middle finger where I get hit and will post pics of it when I have refined it a little more. I have tried gloves but they dont offer any middle finger protection!

Anyone else have any thoughts on the matter?

Got a few things done today that I felt I needed to do. Practiced with my new plywood slingshot design until a band broke. Made a coat hanger slingshot to show how we used to make ours when we were kids. We just used to wrap a rubber-band around the open end once we had the bands hooked on. Made me a new Chinese style slingshot out of 1/4" steel. Besides spending 10 hours at the newspaper.

I guess you long time slingshot guys can answer my question. I don't think my situation is unusual, I am 53, shot slingshots as a kid, and just got back into it about a month ago.

My friends and I were shooting Saturday and we noticed a middle aged guy (imagine that) on a bike watching us. He asked if it was OK he watched, of course we said yes. Later I went and talked to him, he is getting started and wanted to see what kind of ammo we were shooting. He said that slingshots were getting very popular again. First I heard so I thought I would ask your opinions.

Hi all,

after being bitten by this slingshot bug REALLY badly, I decided that I needed to buy a few slingshots and even have a go at making one or two. I was inspired by Joerg's Youtube channel and made the simple slingshot on his blog. After that, I thought that I'd have more of a go....and here are the fruits of my recent labour. I must admit, that I was really taken by Snody's Blingshot and that's where my first attempt at cutting a slingshot that I designed. But it was very uncomfortable, so I redrew it and made it. I added a hole copied from A+ Slingshot's PS range and the next few were very similar to Perry's design. I'm sorry for that Perry, but I had to try it out. Then I evolved it a little more and changed a few things and so it went. I have now arrived at a small handful of designs that I am very happy with. I have evolved my shooting and am now shooting more with the slingshot in my left hand, whereas I started out with it in my right. And I have come up with a band and pouch design that I am very happy with for target shooting. Personally I love the double theraband gold bands but I cant pull them all day without aches and pains in my hands and wrist so I went lighter but not too light.

Anyway I hope that you like the pics. I'd really welcome the feedback. And if I decided to sell any of these, do you think they are any good? And on a commercial note, if any of my designs featured a finger hole in the handle, would I be infringing on Perry's design? Perhaps I would need to license the "pinky hole" like a Spyderco hole!

I made this a couple of weeks ago, finally I'm happy with it so I've got a picture.

I have to say I bought the blank from ebay, although I think I could make my own template I didn't want to buy a massive 2m board from B&Q. Next time I may...
All sanding, filing and drilling was done by moi. It has been finished with danish oil.

I've tried a blue thera-band that disintegrated in minutes and then a gold thera-band but I didn't like it at all (I hear the wave of tutting:P), finally I decided to use a barnett magnum tube, held in place with two 3/8" BBs

After almost a week with a comfortable elastic I can say that it's awesome

Designed specifically with the side shooting style in mind, if you can shoot a Bow... you will be able to shoot this just as accurately, if not more so.
If one were to add a sighting system and put a skateboard wheel bearing set (which I'm freshly out of) through the fork to handle bolt hole, so it self centers... you might be able to be as accurate with this as with a nice .22 pistol.
After just a few minutes of practice to get where the point of aim is... I was able to hit a gallon jug about 50% of the time from around 100'... not to bad for a couple of bits of rubber attached to a leather pouch, a bent steel strip and a simple handle.

hey folks.. how's it going... just thought i would post a quick hello... this forum kept popping up while i was searching for info. online.. my name is Mike and i live in the coastal redwoods of the Santa Cruz mtns.. we are family of Traditional Archers... i have been an avid trad. bow shooter/bowhunter for many years.. my wife and both our boys are all longbow shooters as well.. my boys (ages 5 & 12) started shooting longbows at age of 5.. they rock.
with the exception of our bows, i make all of our archery tackle, arrows, strings and leather goods.. i am also a self proclaimed knife junkie and do a lot of custom sheath work.. i frequent a few other knife/bushcraft realted forums..

i am farily new to the sport of slingshots and look forward to learning more about the sport.. though i grew up shooting wrist rockets, i recently put in an order for 3 custom wood catty's, from Tom over at www.bunnybuster.com one fork for me and 2 naturals for my 2 boys... i am really looking forward to checking them out and i'm sure they won't be my last..

Hello my name is Sam and I live in east central Florida. My question is about buying some theraband gold, I would like to make my own bands but I can't find the gold locally. I'm thinking about ordering a small amount online, I've found some on amazon in 6" x 6' ft section, is this a good amount? Will I have a problem with dry rot? How can I keep it in good shape, or should I just buy pre-made bands when I need to?

I had these made these on the pattern by geko, given to Sixer, then given to mxred91, who gave it to me. They were outsourced. I tried 3/4 on one and 1 inch on two of the pieces. The thicker ones are made of black Kamagong, a heavy ebony like wood, and the other has the grooved grips. The blond wood is Molave(moh-lah-vay), it is just as strong(as an ox) but a touch lighter. It is used for fence posts and is said to last generations. I decided I like this one thicker rather than thinner. I plan to use it as a flip shooter target style instead of butterfly as mxred91 did in his P-Dawg video. I'll try regular flipstyle for now and see how that works, don't think it'd do to well without being flipped.

Well what if the hassle of reaching into your pocket for the slingshot was removed by one simple design.....A walking staff slingshot. Yes hold on I'll link a video of a man making a walking staff but here is the idea see this man here before he finishes it leaves a fork on the top of the walking staff. check that out...You'll then see what I mean...Imagine has that would be...I am going to try it I have bands and such to do so I wish for others to try it as well if they would like. Bands, tubes, allergy and longevity

Hi all, I'm thinking about getting involved in this sport but I have some reservations. Perhaps the more knowledgeable members can set me right on some issues.

About 10% of people are allergic to LATEX, and the allergy can be serious, causing anaphylaxis and sometimes death. All the bands and elastics discussed here are made of latex, unless I am mistaken. Are there alternative materials for bands or tubes? I know thera-band makes a latex-free product, but there are Amazon review that suggest it is short-lived, for example this review:

it takes a lot of tension to make even the heavy bands do anything worthwhile for me. I am a mid weight six foot male, so this may not be anything universal, but...

Thick latex flatbands

So I got a Gym In The Pocket exercise band. The band is <1.5mm thick and is made of latex. Very stretchy, out to over 300%. I made two sets out of it, each set is double layer(10inches in length) so there's 3mm of latex flatband on each fork arm. I set it up on a Barnett Black Widow slingshot and it shoots pretty accurate, considering I havent practiced in a while now. The draw weight is approx around 20lbs at 26'' draw length, I draw to my eye. Im a little concerned about the killing potential of this setup, I dont have a chrony so I cant be certain how much power it puts out. I use a .38 cal leadball sinker, and at 25feet it will put round dents in hardwood so what do you think of this setup. Any idea on testing its power/potential? thanks

I am sure if you use a fixed fork, hold the ball with both hands and go backwards to pull out like 10 meters, you can do it. Maybe two trees from the new garden can serve as a frame.

Still, that is a hefty challenge. The ball is 7,5 kg. Heavy. Too heavy?

Of course the thing must be operated by one man only.

Firstly I would like to thank everyone for your very kind words for my first attempt at a natural fork slingshot. I believe it demonstrates what a wonderfully diverse, intelligent, passionate and - most importantly I believe - friendly community we have on the forums here. Thank you Aaron for establishing such a great community! When I have some more money I will definitely become a Site Supporter!

Especially as I was overly critical of a particular member's initial efforts at crafting his own - you know who are you, in retrospect I realise that my comments were unfounded and offered no constructive criticism or suggestions on how to improve. I am sorry buddy, and in only a very short amount of time you've managed to far surpass my ability to craft slingshots and I believe that you are only one small step away from being at the stage where it actually hurts to sell your slingshots, I'm sure all of the site vendors know that feeling all two well!

PS: When I have some spare money, I will definitely be ordering buying some of your products!

I had what I thought was a nice oak board from a pallet, that was one-inch thick. Also I am coming into the modern age because of my hands wearing out, so I now own a new jig saw and a dremel (actually I've had a router for years, but don't know how to use it except to sink door hinges ). Decided to have a go at a new slingshot, using my new tools.
Well I discovered a crack in the handle of the slingshot after I'd cut it out and carved in some nifty curves and did some round-over with my dremel. I thought no problem. So I drilled a hole and inserted a skewer and some glue. Then I saw another crack going right down one of the forks. Thing was looking pretty good too -- not excellent, but it had potential.

Oh well, there goes 2-1/2 hours. Not a complete loss, though. I needed the practice with the saw and dremel -- still do, for that matter.

That's the problem with pallet wood, especially oak. I have made some really nice stuff with it, but one never knows. . .

Chained Rubber with Easy Frame

I've read and responded a few times recently about chained rubber bands and bending steel frames, so while at the hardware store I walked by the steel rods. I said "what the heck" and picked up a 1/4" piece and bought some #33 rubber bands, latex of course. Went into the shop and bent the frame with a propane torch and a soft faced vice. I like to use heat because I can but the bends more easily right where I want them. You don't have to use heat. I made the ears as basic as I thought would work well, so others might want to try this great little slingshot that will shoot any kind of rubber you want to use. The only critical part is the gap for the bands to be able to slip through. I just use a feeler gauge set for .050" and squeeze the rod down until the tip traps the gauge. Pull the gauge out and you have a nice gap for your rubber. No marks were caused by tools in making the rod, so I could go right to polishing the tips for the rubber. I used black jewelers rouge on a cotton wheel until it was slick smooth. Then just start at the pouch with the first link and continue until you get the length you think you want. If you make it too long it is easy to take out a link with this frame in the field. I had fun making it and now I am going to go outside and relax shooting it. You can easily convert this type of frame to shoot indoors at a catch box also for when the weather turns bad. We used to make stuff like this out of coat hangers when we were kids. You just twist three wires together, very tightly, using a vise and a pair of vice grip pliers. Here is the picture, I don't have the T-shirt yet.

Picked up a small canvas shotgun pouch today at Walmart, $4.00. 3 1/2" wide X 5 1/2" long X 4 1/2" deep. It has a belt clip and two choke tube pouches on one side. Tried it as purchased but found it kind of floppy when loaded with ammo. Made some modifications. I cut a small slit into the top folded over sewn rim and threaded some heavy trapping tie wire thru it, stiffened it up nicely, then cut a rectangle of 1/4" plywood to tighten up the bottom. Perfect shape and stay's firm when loaded. I then figured that if I could seperate the choke tube pouches on the end and open the bottom, my PS-2 would fit nicely there handle down and through. Took a little sewing but came out fine. Will try to post some pictures tomorrow, can't find my camera cable to download. Works great, and keeps the sling safe and handy when changing cans.

Recommendation for Thera-Tube

Alright, so before you read this, keep in mind I am not trying to show off. I simply want a Thera-tube recommendation so I don't waste money on something too weak/strong. Here- I know slingshots are different from bows, but to give you an idea, I can pull a 50lb compound bow with my index finger. If you don't what a compound bow is, I can also pull a 100lb longbow with one finger. At max, I can , with some difficulty pull a 75lb compound bow with three fingers, or a 150lb longbow. The sling shot I am using is the Daisy P51, with a steel body (steel fork and steel brace), and like I said it has a brace ('cause they're allowed over here.) The Trumark RR2 band is still far too easy, and people say that the Black Thera-tube is just somewhat harder. what could I use? Also, I use large ammo, and my grip is pretty good. I only do plinking, but I would like something impressive, and something that does massive damage. And sorry to a certain person on these forums, if you manage to figure out who this is, I was sorta ticked off that day. Thank you for your time, and please give me a recommendation if possible.

I was fooling around on this rainy day, trying to come up with a new pattern. It doesn't look original but it is. It has a wide fork-top to accommodate 1" flat bands and a low fork. Small enough for a pocket, too. Don't know if I'll ever make it, but maybe somebody on here will?

I got a bit of inspiration today to make a slingshot that's as accurate as a pistol, is small/portable, and that you still use like a slingshot... not like a crossbow.
So I came up with the "Sidewinder" concept slingshot... I know, I know, it's really ugly... but this thing can shoot the eyes out of a fly at 20 meters.
It's super easy to build since it uses commonly available stuff to make it from... and IF I or anybody wanted to make it pretty... all they'd have to do is make an ergonomic wooden grip with carved thumb support (like a competition .22 pistol) and polish the steel.
Being a concept build, I didn't think it neccessary to go overboard prettying it up. The concept works (perfectly and super accurately)... so a later build may look nicer... if I ever decide to do it... hey why fix what ain't broken!?!

Kudos to Joerg and his video for inspiring me to think of this.

Joerg pulls his the trigger mechanism 3 meters before locking it in place.

This is my idea.

I have a 48" length of telescoping steel tubes that were made for holding heavy drapes.

You could use wood or metal to achieve the same effect.

A conventional Y slingshot is mounted at the front end of the outer tube.

A second handle is located somewhere along the outer tube.

A third handle is located somewhere along the inner tube (that pulls out) that has a trigger mounted on it (not the mechanism).

The tubes are at the minimum position.

You use the portable trigger mechanism and grab the pouch and the projectile.

Place a foot on the SS handle for the first draw position and pull the mechanism and fit it to the inner tube.

Grabbing the 2 handles you pull out the inner tube until it reaches its draw length where it locks.

A string or a wire connects the trigger to the mechanism.

Not a 3 meter Novitzkenegger, but a much longer than 160 cm butterfly weapon; perhaps 2 meters.

Do you understand this design?

heres wot i believe to be my best yet.i think the hardest thing to do wen making a catty is make your design i believe ive not seen one like this its based on a starship made with a mild steel frame and a pine carved ergo handle and wrist brace the handles got sum unknown wood capping the bottom stained with antique pine .ive been thinking about making a few of these to sell them wotcha think ?

Hi All,

Just thought I would finally say hi after looking through the forum for about 3 weeks now and watching lots of videos on youtube. I got into the slingshots recently and am not even sure what drove me at this point, but so far it has definitely been fun for the whole family. I knew there was no way the kids were going to let me go out and try it without them trying it as well, so I started out by contacting Gary "Flatband" and asking for his help in setting me and my 2 little ones (10 and 9) up with some slingshots. I contacted Gary because I liked the look of his slingshots and after watching his videos on youtube knew he had the experience to help out a newbie. Gary set us up with an ergo for me and 2 plinkers for the kids (along with a spare band set for each, a bunch more bands and about 5 spare pouches). As soon as I knew they were on the way I picked us up 3 pairs of safety glasses and10lbs of air-dry clay (figured it was safer than steel to start with). It has been a blast! We have all been shooting a bunch everyday, as a matter of fact we made balls out of the last of the clay today, I can say we probably got somewhere around 1500 balls from that 10lbs of clay (I stopped counting after 500 and that was about 1/3 gone at that point, we may have gotten 2000, not sure). They make for interesting shots as well, since the kids didn't always make them very round and you could watch them curve in mid air. :-)

The one thing I didn't account for was the fact that I thought my teenage daughter wouldn't be interested. Quite the opposite! She thought they were cool and loves shooting. so needless to say, Gary is going to be hooking me up with a smaller version of my ergo for her.

I definitely enjoy looking at all the other slingshots people are making and definitely will be getting more in the future. I can't list all of the great ones I've seen, but I do want to get the Performance Catapults EPS someday (I like the metal, carbon, wood, should be strong, durable and nice looking), and also want to get a King Cat someday. Have to figure out how to get the King Cat though since Jack states he doesn't sell to NY because the slingshots with wrist supports are illegal here. I do think that since the wrist support can be removed, it would seem to me he could ship to NY if he just didn't attach the wrist support (looks like two screws and nuts). So if I later attached the support it would be "me" making it 'illegal' here, not him.

I definitely enjoy the forum and all of those who share their knowledge on it. I take a little bit from everyone, Joerg's awesome videos and slingshots are a blast to watch, to Perry's how to shoot, to Flatband's history and terminology of slingshots, rubber, and attachments, and Smitty's shooting video. Most recently in the thread Perry started about shooting, Tex wrote some tips, but also just looking at his shooting stance and how he held the slingshot helped a lot. I noticed he shoots with forks/fingers lined up right over one another, until then I was shooting with them at about a 45% angle. Or as Flatband might put it, half-gangsta style. Once I put the forks and fingers straight up and down like Tex has them and then put my target just above the notch where the band attachment latex is, I started shooting a lot more accurate at about 10 yards. Then shooting off my deck at a target about 150 feet away I just had to aim about 2 feet higher than the target (not saying I it it a lot, but was 'in the area') and did hit it a few times.

So .... nice to meet you all! There are definitely people out there reading your very helpful information and enjoying learning and shooting.

I believe I have found the one design I have been working so hard to find. The fork width is two and a half inches inside. Incorporated into the design is a nice comfort factor for several different ways of gripping the slingshot and a handle designed to ease wrist discomfort when shooting with one fork tip on top of the other. I don't think it is good for shooting with the fork tips horizontal, because the top fork is longer than the bottom one.
I am going to order some nice hardwood and start making them to sell. This prototype is just made from cheap 3/4" plywood so that I could go ahead and test shoot the design. I love it and I think others will like it also. So am I right or wrong guys ? Here are some pics:

Hi,

a major source for slingshot bands in the 3rd World are old soccer balls that are cut up after use.
I just had to throw away two old Volleyballs, and cut them in halves to find two rubber bladders. The yellow one seems to be uncolored latex, about the thickness of Theraband Gold. The other one is even stronger, and also has a label that says it is also made of pure latex.

The round shape won't allow me to make perfectly straight bands, but the elasticity of these materials seems to be on par with good quality flatbands.

I have to start out saying MAKING THESE IS FUN! I decided to see what I could make with minimal tools, and off the shelf materials at the hardware store (Menards). Starting with a 5/16" carbon steel rod, without measuring (so that is why it is asymmetrical) I bent it to shape in a vice with a hammer and pliers. All cold formed, no heat. I used a file to smooth off the gouged sections of steel. Painted it with acid etch primer, and wheel paint (left over from my car project). 3/8" latex tubing is from the plumbing aisle. The cord wrap was $4 for 150 feet of cord. The pouch is from a purse I bought at a garage sale for$1. Shoots Great. Pic and Video below

Well, our first laminate turned out good so we have decided to continue making them. Picked out some nice looking leopard wood from ebay and a red oak board, a nice donation from my father. With a little advice from a good friend we made this one. Its 1 inch thick. 2, 1/4" leopard boards on the outside and 1/2" red oak in the middle. It looks great, except the leopard wood wasn't plained. Got 1 coat of poly on it and am planing to put 2 or 3 more. Hope you guys like it

I use a concrete bit smooth side up to polish the cut out section of the forks so the Tubes will have an extreemly smooth guide to ride on.

Cuts friction of the band way down the heat produced from the spinning bit causes the grain of the wood to close up.

I have been shooting a lot of clay balls lately. Here is what I have discovered: The faster/more powerful a bandset is, the more erratically the balls fly. Conversely, the slower the flight, the straighter they fly.

I have this totally awesome slingshot I got in trade from Jmplsnt (on this forum). This thing is one of my very best shooters, and the rubber tube on it is amazing. It's a soft pull and doesn't zip the ammo out too fast, but it can still deliver a good wap! to the target. It is rigged in a style he calls "Gypsy" and is modeled after the way they do things in Arkansas, I think.
This slingshot is rigged with a large pouch for shooting stones, but shoots everything just as accurately as the carefully engineered ones as near as I can tell. I really love this fork and it is a serious contender for being my favorite.
A leather strip of shoe leather is held in place by windings of waxed dental floss, coated with super glue. The tubes are tied with the floss, too. I wish I knew the wood.
One of the most amazing things about the tubes to me is that this is the 3rd slingshot Jmplsnt has used it on, and I have at least 500-600 shots on it! Seems indestructible.

... Oh, yeah. This was supposed to be about clay ammo, huh?. . .
Well, when I shoot the clay with Thera Gold, Thin latex flats, or 4-strand chinese tubes, they are only accurate out to 10 yards at most. But when I shoot with the BadBoy I can double that distance and shoot just as straight. It's gotta be the slower flight.

The BadBoy + clay balls = A lot of fun!

but not really. I opened the box this a.m. , slightly peeved at life, and was about to yell at the postmaster about over stuffing my box. Smalltown USA here... the postmaster is an old friend from back in the day so his remark of "You'll manage...deal with it" met my stare down and forced a schoolboy grin on my face. Recognizing "Royal Mail" stamping I calmed a bit and gingerly tugged and twisted the package free (which under the circumstances I'm living was the equivalent of a 5 year old ripping Christmas presents open ). Scurrying my butt back across the street to open the package from Pete at Hogans Castings... Other than the Leatherman used to open it...wasn't much different than Christmas' of yore.

I've noticed many who are unsure what they want to shoot, and that's understandable. I can give an opinion based on my experience, but the best is to try different ammo yourself.... In order to help with this issue, I have put together an Ammo Sampler Pack of two (2) of each of the different types and sizes I carry. That's eight (8) balls that I will ship to anyone, anywhere for a Buck ($1) to cover the mailing cost sent to my Paypal.
The sampler will include (2) 3/8" steel, (2) 1/2" steel, (2) .44 cal. lead AND (2) .50 cal. lead.

Unscientific comparisons

Well, I have my BunnyBuster Hammermil rigged up with a Bill Herriman's Express bandset; and my Flatband's Tiger Maple Ergo rigged up with a set of A+ Gold Winner bands. And I thought I'd test them out for hunting -- as I have stated, I judge a bandset fit for hunting by seeing if it can penetrate a steel can with a 3/8 steel ball at ten yards. Now, I know that it ain't a really good way to do it, but I'm kind of a simpleton in my approach to life. I will let the experts among us sort out the true meaning of all this.

Before we talk steel, though, here's something that amazed me with a 5/8-inch marble and the express bands. The marble passed through the can without even making it swing and penetrated through the piece of cardboard behind it!

I don't know if the Gold Winners can do that, but I can't try because they are broke, now. Seems the express bands shoot way faster than the Gold Winners, but not with the same force.

I could not make the 3/8 steel penetrate through one side of a steel can, but I came close with this one shot at the bottom of the can:

But for a comparison of the rest of my tests, here is what came out:

Gold Winners = multiple penetrations Express Bands = no penetrations

Now let me acknowledge something here very clearly: The Express Bands ARE GOOD FOR HUNTING. I know this because there are people on here do hunt with them, and I would too. Just that I use this test as a rough guide to judge an unknown bandset. Also I am aware that even weaker, slower tubes can take out small game with larger ammo by using blunt force trauma. Like I said: I'm not very scientific.

Pickle Fork Shooter now shoots BBs. Changed Pouch. Close range shootin is fun. Surprisingly accurate.

Spring Clamps help with tightly holding in place Tubing so it may be tied with 1oo percent cotton string.

Notice my Target Can it is wraped with Saran Wrap, BBs will not fly back out. Excellent indoor Target at 10 to 15 feet.

OK, la chasse commence.

Have rigged my "W" with Thera Gold, 29 cm band length, 6cm (fork) and 4 cm (pouch). Width is exactly hunterband size, it is just longer to allow the butterfly style.

Got 71,64 m/s with the 36 gramm .75 (19 mm) lead ball this morning, a whopping 92 Joules of energy (68 fpe)- from a normal, unbraced frame.

Draw weight is 17 kg.

I think I can pull some more rubber, and maybe I switch to Thera Blue. 100 Joules is in reach!

I did not use the release, by the way, just normal draw.

Hey all!
Sorry if this has been posted before. I had a quick question concerning ammo.
I decided I'd like to stock up on some 3/8 steel ball bearings as an alternative to glass marbles.

However, I'd like to keep it as cheap as possible (including shipping). I did some googling, and it seems that steel balls packaged as slingshot ammo is quite expensive. So I continued to google and found quite a few bulk rate places.

They also apparently have a store relatively local to me, so I might go check that out. But 250 for $6

However it seems prices vary, so what are some stores you all have felt with previously, and how much did shipping cost?

The Novitzkenegger Slingshot Challenge

OK, so we know now that the Butterfly style brings more speed.

So what would happen if Dirk Novitzky would shoot Butterfly, with his arm span of 7ft?

And what would happen if he would be as strong as Arnold Schwarzenegger in Mr. Universe shape, so he can pull monster bands?

And, last not least, what would happen if he would be using a huge starship, and shoot butterfly with these stroong bands?

I plan on making an experimental slingshot crossbow with a draw length of three meters (10 ft). Must be a crossbow so I can cock it as I am NOT Novitzky NOR Schwarzenegger. But I can simulate that crossbreed.

After all the three of us share teutonic genes...

Don't expect a fancy setup, I will simply use wood poles, mount a Cougar to the front and use the new release as a trigger device.

Should be interesting.

First Board Cuts

Here are four of a first bunch of board cut slingers.
One is made from plywood salvaged out of industrial shipping cartons.
Two through Five are made from the kitchen drawer plywood that was removed from our kitchen during a remodel. 1976 plywood.
So far, Five is fav.

Alrighty then... I'm just waiting on some G10 that's being shipped then I'm going to cut out one of each of these... I could probably use laminated wood but I think I'll just wait on the G10.
I made some cutouts from cardboard to get a good feel for the proper angle of fingers and wrist, and it looks like these will be the ones I'll be doing first.

Went to my mail box and got a nice surprise today, a few days back I had said that I was out of leather for pouches, Gary was kind enough to say that he had a few that were thicker than he like and would send me a few...a few to me ment that he would throw a half dozen or so in a envelope and send them out, to which I would have been very greatful. What I didn't expect was that he would sent me half a cow. When I opened my mail box and found a med sized shipping envelope stuffed full of leather rectangles along with half a dozen finished single and double pocketed pouches I was stunned....Gary has to be one of the all time great guys ever. Thanks Gary you're a prince..I put one of on my BB shooter right away and wow what a difference a good pouch makes....as a side note my girl wanted to go shooting too so she confincated another one of my naturals this now makes three that have found their way into her collection.

New Pattern

Here is a new pattern I just got finished with to give me a better position for my wrist when shooting. I shoot with one fork on top of the other and many times I catch myself bringing the top fork out to be more comfortable. Well, when I realized I was doing this I thought about making the top fork longer to go ahead and put my wrist in the position it was wanting to be in.
I also finished the hammer steel slingshot with tennis racket grip tape and some basic black paint to keep away rust.

I just saw Jorges Video where he demonstrated with both steel ball and lead ball that you can actually penetrate and split open the hard shell of a coconut. Very impressive. If you havnt seen it check it out. I think I will make an attempt with the light weight arsenal I have and see if I too can knock a hole in a coconut but with serious eye protection.

Pickle Fork Equipped w/1745 Tubes and ultra thin pouch w/centering hole.

Shooter is 1/4 inch thick Baltic Birch and has contoured top end of forks for bands to remain centered.

This shooter is ultra accurate, ez to shoot and hand slaps are non exsitent.

Just one more thing the cost for a shooter like this w/o bands or pouch is .81 cents each so when I buy a 36 inch section I can get 8 shooters from it.

Well tommorow is zero hour for setting up my catapult stall at the wilderness gathering ( http://www.wildernessgathering.co.uk/ ),a huge bushcraft event that happens yearly here,this will be my first time having my new stall up for a show,and i am hoping it will all go ok!

been working hard all week getting stock up together have made 200 hunters this week ,been banding them up all day and mrs fish has been doing all she can what with a freshly broken wrist!

I had to sack a chap that was helping me recently making bands and shot as he was stealing from me and selling stuff on ,i was having a job to get 1000 shot a week off him yet the molds kept wearing out! so we are back to doing it all again,still now mrs fish has jacked her job in and joined me full time doing this its a bit easier.

so if we do well i shall be putting up my new workshop as the bussiness has outgrown our kitchen!

We've talked to no end about how to smash things to bits. Now I thought I'd change gears. What do you guys think would be best bandset and pouch for this small caliber some of us cast in Do-It molds.

I've shot this ball with what I consider decent penetration, and still would consider it a viable, but limited projectile for small game. It is the .22(well, OK, .22 short) round of slingshots, IMO. It is seemingly far more specialized in order to be done right, however.

I've been interested in stuff that flies/ hurtles/ goes *thwack* all of my life. I'm old enough to know better but still get immense pleasure from my various toys.
A friend and member here spoke to me a while ago about slingshots and I confess that after the novelty had worn off of buying expensive tubes to fit my disappointingly low powered 'Black Widow' when I was about sixteen I thought I'd 'grown out of them'. But now here I am, interest well and truly piqued.

I've made a couple of slingshots over the past week, one of which can be seen on the custom slingshots area.

Having rummaged about in this fascinating world I've found myself inspired by all sorts of people. I love Joerg's amazing designs and have already built his version of the Gloveshot. I also have great respect for Alex Jacob's 'suburban survival' ethic of simple sustainability, as well as being attracted to his styling.
As someone who has been flinging, launching, lighting and pulling the trigger on things ever since I can remember (and I mean that literally...) I can't help but agree with the hunting types who say that if we aim at a live quarry we must be prepared for a swift and fearless dispatch of any wounded animal. So, in honour of those who go before me, I proudly present my..... stick.

At first glance it probably looks cumbersome and foolish, but allow me to persuade you to its charms. The grip is about as comfortable as anything I've ever grabbed hold of (well, almost {;^), the long handle makes a nice counterweight to the forks and feels very natural to someone used to a bow. The blunt end has been bored and filled with lead-free solder to make it a very effective priest and just to reinforce the bad-boy image, the striking face is capped with the brass from a shotgun round.
Note also that the loops are covered with electrical heat-shrink tubing, in an attempt to extend the life of the bands;

When I draw it, I put the pouch through a ninety-degree twist (like Joerg does with his vertical slingshot) and I wonder whether this helps put a spin on the ammo.... either way, this is what it looks like from both ends;

I'm quite chuffed with it - found the stick in my workshop last night and spent most of today working it into what you see here. It's a piece of Sycamore and has been rasped, filed and sanded down to 240 grit and then fed with boiled linseed oil before buffing with a cloth.

Some tense moments for one Corpus Christi homeowner Saturday, as she thought someone was shooting a gun at her home. Turns out no gun-shots were fired, but someone did open fire from a slingshot.

It happened just before 4 p.m. Saturday on the 1000 block of Delta Drive. Investigators tell 3 News at least 2 rocks were fired into the home, from a passing car. One broke a bay window.

Luckily no one was injured.

Witnesses say 4 suspects then drove away in a light blue 4 door car, possibly a Chrysler.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crimestoppers at 888-TIPS.

Been making and developing my board cut slingshots and I've been putting in a lot of practice. I hold the slingshot in my right hand normally but I've found that my elbow feels a little sore and I don't really want to aggravate it so I've been shooting with the slingshot in my left hand and it's all good. I'm hitting the targets pretty consistently. Do many of you shoot with both hands? And is it common to get a sore wrist - sorry I meant elbow - I had to edit this...

This is my copy of Joe T's design, which I nominated for slingshot of the month for its refreshing originality. It isn't an exact copy; it's a little less blocky. But it is a copy.

I would also like to offer this post as an encouragement to any newcomers to the sport and hobby. It is an example of what you can do with just a few hand tools and a piece of scrap wood. You do not need to have a lot of money to enjoy this hobby. All I used to produce this slingshot was a coping saw, a knife, 2 files, a piece of broken glass, and some sandpaper.
Add some varnish and that's it. The wood was free. I used a piece of a poplar board from a cargo pallet. I will put some of Tex's bands on it -- he has an $11.00 min. order policy, but you can get more than one set for that.

I am new to this forum and need help from everyone. I need recommendations for strong and long lasting sling band. I know this question has been asked many time, but I don't seem to find an answer immediately. I am using a slingshot for arrow to fish for carp. I need strong sling band that can do that job. On the other hand, I am having trouble with the band I bought from Dick's Sporting Goods. They only last a few minutes. I need something that won't break that fast. Thanks.

So I am already thinking about the winter time. I live in New Hampshire and we usually get several feet of snow during the winter time. I would like to shoot during the winter time. Does the cold affect the bands so much to make them unshootable? My other option would be to set up a small catch box in my basement however that just doesnt give me the distance I would like. Does anybody else have this dilemma?

One of most difficult things to do when selling band sets is to consistently get good leather for the pouches. I have purchased two hides from the same supplier of the same weight and type, one was excellent pouch leather and the other was no good. Some times the leather from the same hide is good in one area and no good in another area. Leather sellers just don't grade leather for making slingshot band pouches and most won't or cannot take the time to work with a small purchaser. I shoot all new pouch leather before selling it on pouches. I throw away a lot of leather and still a few bad pouches get by me. I have just changed my leather supplier because of this. This is also why I don’t sell pouches as I have trouble making enough for my own band sales. Leather pouches are more trouble than any other part of selling band assemblies. -- Tex

What is your practice schedule?

On average I practice twice a day. In the early morning, on the 'doggie walk', I always have my BB shooter and a pocket full of BB's (.177 cal, 3.175mm). In the late afternoon, when the backyard is in shadow, I do my best to bend an aluminum can that is hanging from the clothes line. But each practice has a different purpose.

During the morning practice I shoot at anything inanimate. I shoot at tree trunks, large and small, which is practice of horizontal aiming. I shoot at tree limbs, which is practice on vertical aiming. I shoot up in the trees, down on the ground, and horizontally. Besides the tree trunks and limbs there is also tree knots, shadow patterns, leaf patterns, and when they are in season, Boise D'arc fruit. Most of the shots are aimed but there are always a few that are pull and release instinctive shooting.

The afternoon practice is more formalized. I stand 32 feet from an aluminum can hanging from the clothes line where there is a cloth backstop behind the can to stop the BB's. The style of BB shooter I am using is a 'through the fork arrangement'. This set up keeps the bands and the pouch vertical. Whereas, an over the top set up is part vertical ( the pouch ) and part horizontal ( over the top of the prongs ). Each shot is deliberately aimed and I take notice of three things before I release the shot.

First is the placement of where the band is attached to the prong. I place the band attachment either centered on the can or to either side of the can if I am pulling the shots that day.

Second, I pull the pouch back until the first knuckle of my thumb (the one just below the thumb nail) touches the top of my ear. If you look in a mirror you will see that the pupil of your eye is on the same line as the top of your ear.

Third, I adjust the pouch up or down until out of the side of my eye I see only one band.

Then release.

I do not always hit the can, but when I do there is a very satisfying 'ding' sound. A close shot is acceptable, but fliers of three inches or more are disappointing. A day of all fliers is a short practice. Tomorrow will be a better day.

Sporting extra long forearm stabilizers and 3/8" diameter rounded nacelles.she is powered by 1 1/4" x 7/8" x 8" folded tapered Latex with formed pouch. Her torpedoes are 1/2" steel balls. She is ready for battle! This little paragraph is the result of too many "Star Trek" episodes and also too many hours thinking and making slingshots! Seriously ,this frame was an idea I had for a new Tournament shooter for myself. It draws 38"s has a 3 3/8" throat opening and has a little platform in front for a possible future sighting system of some kind. I shot it this morning-extremely smooth ( wide throat helps that) but it shot low-very fast but low. A few adjustments and I should have her dead at 10 meters. For those of you who have one of the dankung.com stainless slingshots, have you checked them with a magnet?

Being cautious of the cheap Chinese zinc alloy slingshots, I bought from http://www.dankung.com to alleviate fears of getting a "stainless steel" slingshot that was really cheap zinc alloy. So when my Jungle Hunter II arrived today I continued being cautious and checked it with a magnet. It was indeed magnetic, indicating iron content, but not greatly so.

I compared the singshot to one of my stainless backpacking knives. The knife would jump off the floor to the (strong) magnet and had to be pried loose. The Dankung slingshot however, was only mildly magnetic and would not support it's own weight when I tried to lift it with the magnet.

Is Chinese stainless steel known to be very low in ferrous metal content? This slingshot is pretty heavy for it's size, so that fact in addition to it's (mild) magnetism tells me it is almost assuredly steel (to the best I am able to determine). But I was still surprized by its low magnetism.

Any thoughts or comments?

I must say, after initial inspection and a few shots with this Jungle Hunter II slingshot, I am impressed. But I am a newbie, so I tend to be impressed easily at this stage of my slingshot shooting. The slingshot came with four strand 1745 tubes. These are smaller and easier to pull than I was anticipating, but they appear to zing ammo towards the target with authority. As a comparison, these four strand 1745 tubes are heavier than my Tex-Shooter "Target" flatbands, but lighter than my A+ "Gold Winner" flatbands and also lighter than my TruMark RRT tube bands. I like the feel of these 1745 tubes. I do not like the feel of my TruMark RRT tubes (for what that's worth). The pouch appears heavy duty, thickish, and a bit stiff. It has a suede-like feel on both sides. The Jungle Hunter II is quite a bit heavier than my A+ PS2 (steel vs. wood). It feels good in the hand and the heaviness makes it feel quite solid, I would call it "bullet proof". I have not taken enough shots with it to establish a good aiming point yet, but in the first few shots I was within a 7 to 8 inch circle at ten yards. That should come down as I learn the slingshot.

I am happy I decided to add this one to my meager but growing collection. $19 plus $2.85 shipping from China to USA is very inexpensive for this slingshot IMHO. It took a day or two past two weeks to get to me after placing my order. It was sent registered mail, so I had to sign for it when the postman delivered it. The online tracking of the shipment is pretty much a joke. You know when Dankung shipped it, and then it eventually arrives. The USPS website still thinks my slingshot is in New York, but it's really in my hand right here in Colorado. Pretty useless tracking. But I'm not complaining given the measly $2.85 shipping charge all the way from China. Packing was perfectly adequate and my address was hand written on the box.

I was a big bird hunter before. Phesants was my passion. After doing it for awhile. It just didn't appeal to me anymore. . I'm speechless after watching this.

It is not way an attempt to stop anyone from hunting. It's a free world. You can do whatever you feel is right for you. For me, it isn't. Hope no one is offended, it is not intended to preach but respect my opinion as well.

Mechanism.
Sliding wooden box, latched with that bent bolt. As box is slid forward, bolt pops into a notch. Shown unlatched here.

Top View, shows pseudo-side-pistol-grip to stop rearward movement of sliding box.

Large surgical tubing, folded to grip the forks and keep the snare knots in place.
Sliding box latch now down, visual latch arrangement. Pull up on bent part to release latch.
Tubes: I dunno, got these as "samples" from the local physical therapy location.

Box has about 10 long screws holding top to bottom, do not want it coming apart (and back at me).

On camera this deer was taken with a 30 yard shot, arrow of deliverance tipped with a muzzy broad head and recovered in 95 yards. Both deer harvested in this episode are now cut, wrapped, and frozen for human food.

Just out the paint booth,
These two Hammermils came out nice I think.
# 5 and #6 in the series.
They are made of a maple center, two black phenolics, and sided with Bubinga,
(one of the hardest woods in the world). Both have the HML palm swell,one of Bubinga, and the other of spalted Maple.

I finished this one up yesterday. We finally got a break in the heat-a little more comfortable to work in. Man ,the whole country was baking this summer. Anyway,this one is a 3/8" Aluminum Rod formed and "Fossiled" between 2 pieces of 3/4" Red Oak. It also has a wide 3 3/8" throat for a smooth through the throat delivery and low prongs for less wrist stress. The idea was to keep grinding down until I got an exact fit for my hand and also include a built in Palm Swell. It's a convex type form conforming to the web your hand forms when spread out finger brace style. I ended up cutting a little too much off the Palm Swell but I'll just slap on a Dr. Scholls foam foot pad and that should equalize it. Rigged it up but can't shoot today-heading out-will have to wait for tomorrow. Ain't the prettiest thing but I'm hoping she shoots well! Gotta keep cutting and playing around, after all we are all are really older boys who never grew up! Fun! Flatband

I found a huge Rubbermaid storage container at the side of the road.

Drilled a hole on top and one in each side.

Using a scissor, I cut 3 holes in an old XXL T shirt.

One hole at each shoulder and one on the neck band.

A piece of string to make everything tight. Done!

Place a collection carton below and shoot.

It is fun to hear the marble roll down the lower lip and drop into the box.

Everyone knows I still like to shoot with small diameter, (3/16" or less) tubes, even though I have been talked to as if I were somewhat dim-witted by several folks for shooting with them. I happen to like them, even though they aren't too popular on the forum. I just posted a video on U-Tube (smittyslingshots channel) of me using 20-40 tubes to shoot semi-butterfly style if you are interested, using my modified Dankung for the purpose. Well, I thought it would be nice to incorporate the ability to shoot with tubes as well as flat bands into one wooden slingshot. I like the over the top slingshots and wanted to make one where I could shoot tubes O.T.T. just like flats. This way, I could experiment with all kinds of rubber to enjoy the sport with a wooden slingshot and not have to keep making steel slingshots which are pretty hard for me to make. Plus the wood has a feel and beauty that steel can't match, not to mention it is much lighter in weight. I wanted to be able to switch to flats using the same frame that I use to shoot with tubes. I browsed around and saw lots of attachment styles and I have come up with a slight modification to any wooden flat band slingshot that is easy for anyone to do and that works very well. I have been shooting with it now for about a month and would like to share it with others who might be like minded.

All I did was to drill a 1/4" hole right in the groove all the way through and chamfer around the hole on both sides. Great care was taken to insure a smooth transition so the rubber wouldn't be damaged while shooting. The tubes are also protected from abrasion by a piece of tubing through the hole surrounding the tubes. Just pull them up and over to shoot just like flats. I have tried leather for the same purpose in the past, but it lessens the rubbers ability to fly over the forks and slightly decreases the draw length. I haven't found any drawbacks yet, except I didn't incorporate the slot for quick change like the Chinese style metal slingshots for strength purposes. The tubes can be changed out about as fast as a set of flats, so that seems pretty good to me.

I am new to the forum, unfortunately not to slingshots.

In 1997, a friend (at the time) & I were drinking & thought it would be a blast to go break windows with a Crosman wrist rocket from his car... Needless to say we got busted & they traced the 3/8 inch hunting shot all over town back to us. I got a felony due to the high dollar amount of damage.

Needless to say, I've done my time & grown up a ton, a father of three, married to the mom, 30 years old & a sincere Bible student (JW).

I was looking online for something air gun related (I frequent the Canadian Airgun Forum - http://airgunforum.ca - Good folks there) & came across the "Sling-X-Bow" & needless to say I was WOWED by it.

I decided I will join here, get to know you good folks, learn from pros, build the wooden version, then machine a smooth & fancy version, & share my experiences.

I look forward to "shooting" the bull with you guys, ttys.

3rd Slingshot and Shooting Butterfly Style

I have completed my third slingsot. It is designed from a picture Sixer posted, that he developed by looking at Geko's designs. It is made out of Plyboo, that is Bamboo Plywood or Multiplex as it is called in Europe. It has red Therabands that are 12" (305mm) long. I am trying to shoot butterfly style. I am not very consitent. I have attached a video of the slingshot, and me trying to shoot Butterfly style. Maybe you guys can give me some pointers why my accuracy is so bad. The Video is edited down from the original length to reduce boredom and multiple misses. Thanks

Returned yesterday and could not wait to hit the workshop...

First, I made the prototype I designed for the boys from USASlingshots. I must say it took me about two hours, and I guess that even if you make it in batches it can't be made within a few minutes...

But I am TOTALLY PLEASED with the outcome. This is one of the best designs I ever came up with.

It fits the hand ideally, both in hammer grip or with frame support. The fork height is just right, and the clamp on works GREAT. Swift band change, tubes, flats, whatever you like. The screws are flush, no edges that could cut the rubber.

I forgot how nice a trough the fork shooter performs, no handslaps, no pouch entanglements, just perfect.

The grip is really comfortable. I discovered that when I made my Cocobolo shooter.

I stained the frame so the pattern of the multiplex (20mm) comes out nicely. No varnish, though.

This time I won't publish details how to make it, I will tell the boys and noone else. No blueprints, of course. And I do not permit any copies. In fact, I herewith pass all the rights over to the boys and they can decide what they want to do with it. Sell it, use it, publish it, discard it, whatever. It is theirs. They may say that I designed it, though.

I hope that I can teach the boys how to make it, meeting the high standards people expect from a Jörg Sprave design. It may take a few attempts but in the end, if they are committed, we will manage.

Alright guys I was reading how wider forks are better for accuracy so I took my black widow apart and bent the forks to almost 3" apart. I put it back together and realized that one side is a tad bit lower than the other. Will this affect accuracy with one band lower than the other?

Here you go a bit of fun after all the copying thing, This is my new slingshot the Cyclops it is made out of Red Oak, and is a very strong wood, i cut a thin strip and hit it with a ball hammer it never snapped just left a little bent,
it has a wide fork i dont know the width i never use a tape, i just make them, for a bit of fun i gave it a eye, I finished it with teak coloured wax, ive fitted it with full width taperd black band, and it hits with a smack, i,ll be using this one with 13mm lead balls,
and i suppose if you run out of balls you could always pull its eye out ha ha, jeff

The one on the left is a modified PS-2 with slightly tapered forks and a 1 inch post. One could say it isn't a clone, but it is too close not to call it a copy. The other is a Snody Blingshot. Been making clay balls for a while but really never kept track of how many or the cost, so I did that yesterday and day b 4, here's the scoop=
Purchased 2 1/2 lb container of air dry clay at Wal Mart, brand name Crayola in the craft dept, for $4.95, started making balls they are very close to 1/2 in dia, or 50 cal, can make around 200 an hour while watching TV=OK I got 746 balls out of the 2 1/2 lb container that cost $4.95,and they shoot very good in my shooters out to about 20 yards, then I really don't care where they go, penetration is about 2 layers of cardboard, but lead 44 cal is good for about 8 layers, the clay usually don't bounce ot richochet much, just fun to shoot, that figures out at around .0066 cents per ball, very cheap shooting, it's neat, fun, and cleanup is easy

Help, my girl decided to have some remodeling done, we needed a new ceiling in the livingroom and hallway, and she decided to have the floor done as well. This started monday and appears that it is going to continue till next week. Currently the only rooms that are habitable are the bed rooms and the kitchen with the workers in between, so for the last week we have been spending most of our waking hours in the kitchen since there is a bathroom off it and the back door. Now we do have a large kitchen but it also is housing the bulk of the livingroom furniture...so me, my girl, and a 70lb german sheperd along with two rooms of furniture all crammed together, can you start to see the problem here???? and what is worse and I mean really bad is that all my slingshots got packed up and I don't know where they are and don't have room to dig....now I do have my BB shooter but Im not happy with the pouch, which makes shooting less pleasent than I would like.....but my supplies and tool are also MIA so I can even fiddle with it.....Grrrrrrr Some one shoot me please!!!

Yesterday I went to the mailbox and found a mysterious package waiting for me. I hadn't ordered anything lately so I didn't know what it was. Lo and behold when I opened it up I lit up like a kid on Christmas morning!!!!!!
My good buddy Dayhiker had sent me a present.
It was the most beautiful little natural shooter I have ever seen complete with a nice little burned in cross and a square braided lanyard with monkey fist knot!!!!!! His note said that he feels that a smaller slingshot is better for butterfly shooting. It fits the ticket. I strung it up this morning with some black butterfly bands and had a blast shooting it. I wonder what kind of wood it is??? It's BEA...Utiful!!! Nice and smooth finished with linseed oil.

Butterfly Shooting

I am still trying to learn butterfly shooting. I think small fork and point-and-shoot is how this should be done. dgui's advise on tilting the fork toward target is helpful too for me. I use Skit Slunga's little mini skitty and the black thera he sent me. At first I was having nightmares with bands breaking at the pouch after 20 shots or less! (I think maybe I was stretching the bands too much on the tie.) I am now using the Texas method and have shot these many times with no noticeable wear.
Because of the easy draw, I am holding this small fork with my thumb at the base of the fork. First I pull back to my ear and locate the target at the fork tip; then I pull back far and let it go.
I'm starting to hit the cans now.
Speed is impressive. Power isn't. Barely dents steel cans at 10 yards.

Ok yesterday I went on and as usually had to wade through a board that was plastered with spam (pretty much a everyday thing) I reported one of the posts said something like " cann't you do something about this crap I feel like cancelling my membership every time I see this kind of thing" and when I saw that the idiot who posted it was still on line I PM'd him and said " This is a slingshot forum, keep your moronic spam to yourself" now while I realize I could have been more PC about it, none of it was said on a open forum and none of it was abusive...WTF??? does that deserve a perminate ban?? When I moderated a weapons forum I would have said worse to a spammer and on open forum!!!

I have found them to be excellent. I made 9 inch long bands doubled up for my natural. You can see it in my avatar. I really really like these bands. They are the brands heavy bands but are much thinner than thera gold. Since thera band is easier to get and a little cheaper does anybody know which color thera would be compareable? I can mail someone with experience a sample of this rubber.

Some times work is fun.
I work at a metal fabricating shop. the guys i work with are really cool.
we have slingshot wars using rubber punchouts. the distance is between 20 and 30 yds.
we have rules. no head shots, and groin shots.
mostly we try and bounce off the wall to hit our opponent on the the other side of the shop. we started out using wadded up masking tape, but they dont fly very good. the rubber punch outs fly nice.
so far, no injuries other than a short time red mark. it is a badge of courage.
got to keep on your toes at times because payback is a b.tch.
everyone has BB slingshots in one form or another. we all have to wear safety glasses by company rules (and side shields), so it is a pretty safe game. we dont shoot at non participants, but more and more want to play

I just went out back for a quick practice session while taking a break from work. Picked up my A+ PS2, Tex-Shooters target bands, and my crazy Gobstopper jaw breaker candy ammo. First three shots, I hit three bullseyes in a row (1-1/2" diameter circle at 10 yards!) I was so flabberghasted that I had to put the slingshot down and come back inside to fix myself a can of Dr. Pepper (soda pop) for a celebration. Now my arm hurts from patting myself on the back so much.

Dang, I wish I could do that every time! When you have a lucky/exciting day like this, it really picks you up. I need to go put some money in lottery tickets now before my newfound luck runs out! (I know I'll probably never shoot like this again, so I'm really relishing the moment right now)

Here is how I store extra band assemblies. I use large amber pill bottles, as a person my age has plenty of. It helps eliminate oxidation and protects them from UV damage. Easy to carry and to open when I need them in the field. -- Tex

Swim cap bands!?!

Has anyone tried to use the rubber from swim cap bands? Well I'm gonna give it a try this weekend!

Let me tell you why I ask and why I want to give it a try. My girls are swimmers and I was down at the pool when I saw a couple girls playing with the caps. They got a couple of girls to hold the edges of the cap in the water and one girl would step inside the cap. They would bounce the girl up and down until the cap was inflated with water and the girl would be sitting in something that looked like a large beach ball.

I grabbed one of these caps this morning and gave it a pull and I was surprised how it strong it was and how well it snapped back. I think it was a red TIR cap. This one felt like standard band rubber.

I'll post pics and results on how it works.

Am I overboard in storing my slingshot inside a closed dark bag between shooting sessions (which happen daily)? Certainly I'll store all replacement bands in dark/cool. Once they're mounted on the slingshot though, am I being the typical nerd engineer in worrying about keeping the setup in the dark? My last bandset (Theraband Gold from A+ slingshots) lasted about 2 weeks of fairly heavy daily shooting (using very light ammo) before I started noticing tears and had to retire them. That timeframe represents many many hundreds of shots for me.

More Manzanita Naturals

Well I am working on a couple more Manzanita naturals and put some flat bands on my old one.

The two raw naturals have not been trimmed to length yet or even sanded. I haven't made up my mind on what I want to do with them yet. I'm using my PS-1 for scale. The one on the right is a nice hand full.

The other is one that I made a few weeks ago. I "found" a blue exercises band in my wifes stuff and decided to give it a try. I wanted to make some heavy butterfly bands so I made them 12"x2"x4". I connected it the way I did, just to make it easy to adjust while I was figuring it out. No one in the office today so I set up 6" thick polyethylene foam to give it a try. I poped in a .44" led ball and pulled it back as best I could and WACK! a small hole was in one side and out the other and into some empty boxes. I thought it was safe since I tried it out first with the PS-1 with the Gold Winner bands on it because it only penetrated 2 3/4". Man, combine heavy flat bans and long draw length and WOW! This was just a test for fun and I will probably trim them down to 12"x1.25"x3.5" for the next run. I wish I had a way of telling how fast it was going.

Hello folks, I know its been awhile since I posted on SF so I thought I'd give a review of the newest addition to my ever growing slingshot family. It comes from a far away land but it is made by people just as passionate as we are about slingshots. By the way, if any of you visit the Trumark forum you'll see I posted the same review there, so don't bother reading both. Ever since finding all you folks on-line, I have been introduced to many designs I never new existed. One of the slingshot manufacturers to catch my eye was Dankung. After visiting there site, I was shocked at how beautiful their models were and how high quality they appeared. At the same time, I was also wary of ordering products from overseas, and was not sure if the beautiful pictures matched the actual product ( ever try chat room dating?). Well I decided after seeing that quite a few of you who I trust had purchased products from them that I would give it a go. After a few hours of indecision, I decided to go with the "Black Palm Thunder" model which they advertise as their smallest. Now if any of you know me or have read my previous posts, you'll know that I'm a rather tall guy with VERY large hands. Even though I had read of some people finding the Dankung slingshots to be on the small side, I decided that with a choked up fork grip, I could make it work. The ordering was extremely simple, and I paid with pay-pal. My order took just over 2 weeks to arrive and when I opened the package, it was just as beautiful as I had imagined! I quickly started trying some different grip styles but I found that even with my monkey fingers, I could still hold it comfortably. The only thing that might be disconcerting to some folks is that when held as suggested, your index finger appears to be right in the line of fire. Well, when shot with the flip style technique, you have nothing to worry about. I would not suggest it for beginners, but for someone like myself who has been shooting with this grip most of his 20+ yrs of shooting, I was instantly destroying empty cans at a wide variety of ranges with ease. This slingshot would not be my choice for someone who uses a sight system, but for an experienced intuitive shooter, this thing is AWESOME! Well folks, you can read enough about the ease of band changes on many other posts so I won't bore you to death, but to wrap it up, I am extremely pleased with this product and will definitely be trying some of their other models in the future. Even though when it comes to production slingshots, I have always been a big fan of Trumark, Tim and the others over seas at Dankung are just as passionate about their love of quality slingshots. I hold mine angled so as to point with it. I realize how it looks but I get zero hand, finger or fork hits.
