Stainless Steel Slingy

Here is one I knocked up on nightshift tonight to pass the time.. Made of stainless rod (6mm) and some flattened 3/4in tubing for the handle. Pouch is made from the thumb section of a welding glove and is pretty thick but soft and pliable. The bands are longish (90-100cm draw) but thin since I don't want to damage anything at work lol...

It's a bit rough but it gets the job done

below is a vid from games keeper john, it is very telling how fork width can effect your shot speed, i have felt it in shooting different types of ss's but without a chrony it was just a guess, hope you enjoy.

OK, I’ve been lurking long enough on the forum. It is time to revile myself and start my own topic

First things first: my name is Rafal, I live in Poland (Cracow to be more specific) and I am a different type of a –holic:
- first and mainly a knife-o-holic;
- then airguns-holic;
- watch-holic (from watches, not watching );
- and in July 2011 I think I fell again in slingshots

I don’t make many slingshots and they are not a showpiece type so there is no need to make a topic for every slingshot I make.

First is my truly first after maybe 20 years and my last slingshot made by my Grandfather
Wild cherry branch cut down during a peeeeeee stop (remember kids: always carry your knife with you ), banded up with football inner tube:

It gave me a lot of joy but the band snapped very quick and I started to look after some serious slingshot making materials.

Very soon I’ve got TBG, an oak fork (sorry for the rough finish) and I started to experiment with different band widths and lengths. Also a matchstick mount was my first in that frame:

Then I had a short romance with armbraced slingshot and tubular bands. Didn’t like it thou and sold it:

Awhile back an older guy from Maryland came in the shop and bought some supplies and saw some of my slingshots told me he had some wood and to come get it , so he came in this morning and brought me some oak and black walnut , so he got another ss for his grand kids . He told me to come over any time he has 200 acres and am welcome to any wood there.MM

I've had this glued up for months, I just banged it out yesterday on the new belt sander. Torsten's shooters look comfortable to me, so I tried to mimic the proportions. Hasn't been shot yet, I just finished it after dark. First attempt at superglue finish, love the look, hate the grip. It's like grabbing an ice cube. Gonna rough it up a bit. I think it's gonna shoot just fine. And at least the dog likes it.

Made from a limb of a gum tree that fell in the paddock last week after a storm. Its only a little light fellow but it's good to cut my teeth on building and learning how to shoot again.

So there's been a lot of talk about finishing lately. Linseed oil, tung oil, danish oil, urethane, bees wax, etc. But nobody has mentioned outdoor DECKING oil?? I mean this stuff is designed to penetrate, and protect from the elements.What more could you want from a finish?? I used it on my first ERGO about a year ago and as far as I can tell it's in as a good a shape now as when I first applied the oil. with all due respect to the linseed soakers, it took about 24 hours and was ready to shoot! Now I admit if you want a nice shine to it then a bit of beeswax or similar polish wouldn't hurt, but that's just a matter of choice. Heh heh just thought I'd give the newbies something else to think about!

Some of the Aussies got to together and did a swap. The one I did for Ben I liked so much I had to make one for myself. Made from 22mm spotted gum with a queensland maple swell and a Tassie oak swell. the one on the left has a mahogany stain, the one on the right has an inserted swell.

Couple weeks ago I got one of those Recurve Hunters from Roger (Wingshooter). He banded it with some of Tex's straight-cut latex.

Last night's dinner included spinach-in-a-can ... well we did dump it in a saucepan and heat it up before consuming. Anyway, I saved the steel can as a target.

Well, today I was shootin' inside. Killed couple alum cans and then decided to hang that STEEL can.

Did I mention those latex bands really zing 3/8" steel balls?

Did I mention that my indoor practice room has a mirror hanging on the wall and located somewhat opposite from my targets?

First shot hit the can, but not solidly. Ball ricochets and I hear a funny "crack" sound. Really didn't want to walk down the hallway, through doorway, and look on wall to left where mirror was hanging. Yep, there's small divot taken outta that mirror! No cracking, but definitely a divot.

So, if you're thinking of shooting at a steel can inside ...... may want to reconsider!

Wonder how long it'll be 'til The Wife notices?

Hey guys I went out killing cans today and I'm getting better and better! now that sports are done I have time to shoot! I cant shoot inside because parents won't let me so I shoot outside and only can shoot while it's light!

Anyway today I went 7/10 shots with 9mm steel and did some damage on some cans pretty proud!

I was shooting with my modified ninja from Charles with some braided 64's and the can was just crumpling and when I 'butterflied' I punctured both sides!

The day began Jan. 22 season friendly tournament on a roll (not valid for the rankin) in a nearby town called "Quijorna" taking advantage of their celebrations, organized a run where the partners enjoyed a great day of shooting and good food, the coin toss winner was Javier Diez has greatly improved his shooting technique, I do not have pictures of the tournament, I could not attend these tournaments are held on holidays and me is when I work.
Javier told me that when my local computer bag the slingshot were left stunned, had to make two categories.
Manuel and Javier are still working on the design, I make these pictures.

Modded the S9

The first thing I did was remove the clear plastic handle. It was uncomfortable and I wasn't using the ammo that it was meant to store.
I attempted a paracord wrap, but I have no skill at cord-weaving and I quickly became dissatisfied with my results. It was better than the plastic, but not
great by any means. I didn't bother with a pic of this intermediate step.
After seeing what Tex did with the foam cycle grips, I thought about the rubber grips I pulled off my mountain bike when I swapped them out last year.
It took a little cutting, and I had to put a few wraps of duct tape around the frame, but I got it to fit decently. The rubber handle is comfortable and very grippy.
I got to thinking that I liked the look of the tubing you see on the forks of Dankungs so I found some 1/4" ID black fuel hose to serve that purpose.
I picked that and some RR-T bands up a couple of weeks ago but, obviously, I had to wait until I pulled the existing bands off to install it.
The original bands on my S9 began showing wear much faster than I expected. Could be that it spent a long time in the package waiting to be bought?
So, yesterday I finally decided I'd gotten enough shots out of them and I didn't want to get slapped in the face if one of them broke.
I installed the tubing (it took a heat gun and some oil) on the forks and cut it to size with a razor blade. Then I slid on the RR-T bands and trimmed the handle material a bit more to clearance it for the new 'fork protectors'.

After giving it last night to set, here's what I have.

It was £20 and is solid brass but with handles to go with it and hold and work the mould also £20 so £40 all in and im ready to mould, but pretty cheap compared to some I seen online, ok yes its single mould but once I had a system going today I knocked out 1 every 8 to 10 seconds or faster and made 105 before I knew it in less than half an hour but I will only get faster as I had slight problem today with my gas stove

I used a portable camping stove I bought last year in millets outdoors store for £15 which came with 4 gas canisters which last hours on continuous, however they dont like extreme cold and today I still had a garden full of snow so after about 10 mins the flame got lower causing temp of lead to be no good as gas canister is full of ice cold gas so if outside temp gets to certain ammount it dont work properly ........and I was on a roll

Anyway I melted lead in old stainless steel saucepan and the lead was from my father-in-laws old lean to roof so no cost there.

Jeff at ball moulds where I bought it from made me also a lead dipper made from an old compressed gas bulb the type used in precharged air rifles and pistols and you dip this in lead as he cut out the back and it pours beautifully into the mould each time saving time and eliminating the need for metal ladel to pour out the moulten lead.

I know some have 10 to 12 ports for making that many each time but you still have to fill each individual port wait for it to set then turn over and repeat but with this single mould you will get down to a ball every 5 seconds with practice as this was my first real go at it and I am very impressed and am facinated at making my own ammo, and as you can see by my mini digital scales the lead ball weighs 83.6 grains or 5.41 grams and the steel ball weighs 54.6 grains or 3.53 grams so a fair difference in weight and the lead ones do pack a punch a lot more so than the lighter steel.

SAFETY.......I had on thick jacket a hat goggles thick gloves and basic dust mask not that it would stop any major fumes but to be honest if done outside there is very little fumes to breath in unless your over the saucepan with a towel over your head like you would with steam if you had a cold but always with moulten lead you should wear saftey equipment.

Advanced focus training, shooting and lighting matches

After you've mastered cutting cards and blowing up marbles... the next stage in your accuracy evolution could be shooting and lighting strike anywhere matches.
Penley makes a pretty good match for this purpose... but I've had reports of the light tipped green colored Diamond brand strike anywhere's working okay too.
To increase your odds of striking the match angle it towards you a little and just so barely scrape the white with your shot. Using light weight ammo at around 200 fps or slower helps a little as well as making sure your matches are as dry as possible too.... a blow dryer works well for this purpose, but I've heard tell some guys drying them in an oven at a low temperature also.
The way I first started lighting matches was by placing them in a large pony clamp and angling them towards me by about 5 degrees. Once I was able to strike those fairly consistently, I went to the upside down suspended shot, then a smaller clamp and then setting it all in motion before moving further and further away.

There's a very old yet very true saying that applies.... "if you're not growing then you're dying."
It's my opinion that's kind of like how you should view your journey into the world of the slingshot... if you're not getting better and achieving more and more, whether it be in your shooting, building or knowledge then your interest will stagnate and die.

Colorado/Southwest Slingers?

Greeting, Slingers, Abe Stranger here.

I have recently started work on a plan to organize a small slingshot tourney in Colorado. The plans are still in the fledgling stages of development, but I am very enthusiastic about the idea, and hope to have everything worked out before the end of the summer. The date I have in mind is for a September, perhaps early October, weekend. Would anybody in the area—or even New Mexico, Wyoming, Utah, Kansas—be interested in collaborating on a project like this? I’m not talking about a big event, more like a largish picnic or BBQ featuring slingshots, target shooting…whatever else we can think of. I’m open to any suggestions.

P.S. It needs a name. I like “The Great Colorado Shootout”

Braided bands!

Hey guys I'm doing this quick to help a friend here on the forum and here is a little tutorial how to braid bands quick and effectively!

1st step: put one rubber band through the pouch.

2nd step: thread a band through the ends of the first rubber band.

3rd step: keep repeating second step you can also add more than one for a taper affect.

4th step: once you have linked all the bands you want you attach it to the frame I am using gypsy tabs right now.

I have just removes the wrist-support from my B52, and it shoots much better. The only problem is that the squarish shap kind of digs into my hand when I draw. I thought of using electrical tape to soften up the shape, but I'm sure someone out there has a better idea. Any suggestions?

I just spent an hour of pleasurable if chilly shooting in my backyard with an old friend. A Marksman folder that had had the folding wrist brace sawn off about 30+ years ago. The bands were Trumark RR2 bands that looked to be in good shape even if over a year old. The ammunition was a recent find in the craft section of my local Walmart. Apparently they sell 3 pound bags($5) of cleary marbles for making dried flower arrangements. Now the sizes vary but they feel a bit over a half inch and have a decent weight. They have a decent smack on the 20oz soda bottle that I have hanging in my trap at the moment. Well they did until one of the bands snapped at the handle. Should have replaced the bands on the old slingshot in the first place instead of trusting year old bands. But they did deliver good service for a hundred or so shots today before breaking. Time to put another set on and try again tomorrow. Should be good for another go. I am finding the tapered bands that I have on my Trumark S-9 work best for 9 mm steel and when they snap it is usually at the pouch. The RR2 bands that I keep on another S-9 rebadged by Chief AJ and on the old Marksman seem to work best for heavier half inch steel or larger marbles and they break less often, but when they do it is usually by the forks.

Cut a few forks today

Hello everybody,

after reading lots of posts and looking at your fantastic homemade slingshots I brought home two forks a few days ago. Being new to making naturals I did about everything wrong and both of the forks have fine cracks now.

I decided to go out again today "hunting" for more forks. This time I cut them with lots of extra length (20-30cm). I also sealed the ends with superglue and now keep the forks in the cellar for a few months.

It was a very nice day out there, the sun was setting already when I arrived. This is a beautiful oak tree with many many really nice forks in there. With a proper saw and a mule I could have brought home half a ton. There were other cut down oaks an beeches around.

My stuffed backpack and my swedish army parka - It was -16°C today.

When I was done stuffing my backpack the sun had gone down already and on my way back it was getting dark.

Here is a pic of my haul: 2 beech forks and 5 oak forks.

Here is a pic of my unfinished oak slingshot from last week - the one with the fine hair cracks... the cracks are very fine, maybe not even half a millimeter. Still too much risk to use it?

I hope my new forks will dry out evenly and I can start carving next summer!

Natural Ring Shooter

I was digging through a pile of limbs that my neighbor cut off his Cashew tree and came across a fork that was quite disappointing at first glance. Further examination revealed enough meat to carve a stubby forked frame, so it went into my fork box. Today, I decided to make a ring shooter from it. Follow along as I go from raw fork to finished shooter. Here's the fork before debarking.

Ash forks from The Gopher

I recently did a trade with The Gopher for some nice little ash forks in the raw. Ash is my favorite wood. This is how the smallest of the three he sent came out.

It's a great little plinker and the wood is very nice. I like it a lot.

I think I'm sending this one off to Melvin who likes small forks. He has made me two beautiful board cuts and doesn't own a natural yet. Hope he likes it.

Didn't there used to be a forum on here for trades? I can't find it.

Anyways, I just made this dark walnut-stained slingshot. It is very big, 7" high by 4-1/4" wide, and 2" between the forks. It is made out of 3/4" thick plywood. Right now it has only one coat of spar varnish on it. I plan to give it 3 more coats.

If you like big slingshots and have some extra TBG on hand you can have this one for enough TBG to make two single-layered bandsets. (A piece approximately ten inches long by 4 inches wide.)

Anybody out there with big hands and some Gold TheraBand?

Mobile SS Training Device

The search for the perfect target is over. After tearing up everything that I have used as a target, losing ammo, cleaning up paper,shards of alum and steel, and card bard,off the ground and eating beans, I began my search for the perfect SS target.

It is a very simple but functional design.

Materials needed:

one large comforter ( if you have a Wife then you most likely have an extra comforter or two) a carpet floor runner also good.

One wheel barrow

two or more 3" round galv. elect box covers

String

(Positives) you can wheel your target anywhere, easy ammo collection, perfect size metal target for hunting training and card cutting practice. ( as you hit the target ,or the wind blows the covers spin,move,sway.This gives great target practice to cut cards as the cover will turn to give you an edge shot. "AIM SMALL, HIT SMALL"

I place the covers at different elevations rather than shooting at the same height target all the time.adding more covers gives you a good practice session, to prepare for different situations in the field.

i have only shot at 13 yds. I used 12mm,3/8 and 5/16 steel. The covers will take hit after hit. I do doubt that I will ever "have" to replace. Out of 100s of shots, there have been only 1 or 2 richocets where the ball did not end up on the comforter.

Hi Guys Just sorted the final confirmation that Jeorg and his good wife Tanja are coming to do a
Youtube Video here at MILBRO PRO SHOT UK (HOGANCASTINGS) this week 9/2/12.
The footage being shot for 2 day will show all the aspects of sand casting in aluminium and bronze.
all the footage being taken will be from my main foundry here in sheffield uk.
We have received a new master pattern from Jeorg only last week that will form the main slingshot being cast, The new design goes by the name of` MOORHEAD`.I hope that we will be able to get one or two other slingshot in the film as a way of thanking people for there kind help,so keep a close eye out for your slingshots guys.Jeorg say that the film will be his longest running film that he as ever taken so we are expecting a few long day in the foundry and finishing shops.We are realy looking

I popped into the local plastics place today to show the owner a mostly completed acrylic s/s I made recently (more on that soon). So I showed it to him and asked if he had any more acrylic scraps I could take from him. He gave me a rather large piece with the only caveat that I make him a slingshot.. Score! It's a sheet of 28mm clear acrylic measuring 550x280mm enough for about 10 slingys if I'm careful. So ask around guys, u never know what u will get

Hello All.

Been crusing the site for a few days now and im hooked. Im From NSW Australia if anyone is interested,

I will be posting regualr supply of steel ammo on the classifieds section to help the aussies who cant access it easily. i Also have a small amount of FRESH Green Thera band that im selling. Im also trying to negotiate latex sheet for regular supply. I will advise when that is happeneing. Most of this stuff is for my own personal use but i can see from the forums that some people have trouble accessing it and as such im trying to help people out.

Let me know if you interested or if you can get a better deal as i spend wayyyy to much on ammo and rubber. Bloody addicted to slingshots.

I've already downloaded some of the board templates and made a few forks. Some really nice designs here, thanks to everybody who has posted a Slingshot Design. I will make very good use of them indeed.

I will take a pic of my best slingshot soon and post it for you guys and gals to check out.

On a side note, Anyone know where i can get differnet coloured timber for making board cut forks. i use 7 ply at the moment and its strong but i wanna try some laminates and some palm swells as my skills develop. Anyway, Any info would be appreciated.

Catch Box Idea

The next time you order a pizza dont through the box out, it makes as a great catch box, just duct tape a folded up bed sheet or thick towel to the inside of the box, close it, slap a target on the out side of it and shoot away. Its a great catch box, and serves well for inside shooting too!! Have fun!

Just had one of the best days because my 6 year old daughter and I spent about two hours shooting for the first time. I was so proud of her, all I had to do was show her how to hold the SS the right wat wat and how to grip the pouch and off she went. Her first shot she hit the target and was so excited she was grinning from ear to ear. It felt so good to share that moment with my daughter, so here you go check out some pics of our day!!

I am declaring war on anybody -- and there are many of you -- who goes higher than 220 grit when finishing your forks.

1) Tons of very nice furniture is made where sanding goes to 220 grit -- period.
2) You do not make up for shaping deficits by making it smoother.
3) Slingshots that are too smooth are hard to hold, and also discourage use for being too "pretty".

My girlfriend' s son( 15 years) had a little comercial slingshot without bands, so fixed it with strong bands. I tryed to shoot it but it broke. That' s why i made this one for him and now he completely forgot the old one. It is inspirate from a PDF i have found here, i don' t know who designed it but the name is" Mini 2" .

I have not been too busy on here in the last weeks, but I did not stop making slingshots, so here are some pics I'd like to share. I've been carving some naturals recently, all of which I soaked in linseed oil, sanded to 1500 grit and finished with beeswax.

The first one is a natural with a wide fork, some kind of maple, if I'm not mistaken. I tried for a style similar to Joerg Sprave's Hammerhead-design. But I'll probably have to do something about the handle, it's a little too small for the bands I put on.

Next there's a fork I found in the park, not sure what it is. It cracked badly during drying, and I had to cut away a lot and make the handle short, so it's held almost like a v-shot. But the wood is just beautiful, where i cut away the cracked parts it had a dark color underneath.

The next one is also similar to a v-shot. Dogwood of some sort, carved to fit my hand. I'll admit though, I have not tried it yet, not even put bands on, it's way too cold outside anyway.

El Topo sent me two forks a while back, one was olive wood (awesome wood, really!), and the other one was a small birch fork. Since I had never tried leaving the bark on, but I had seen marcus sr. make some cool cattys this way, I gave it a try.

And last are the two most recent slingshots. Nothing special in themselves, just two beechwood plinkers that look very much alike (for those who speak german: Es sind ZWILL-Linge!!! rofl... ok, for those who don't speak german: I can't translate this joke, but let me assure you it would not be worth the effort).
The only new thing is that these are finished with propolis, so that's one thing they have in common with a Stradivari XD
I've been meaning to try this finish for some time now, it seems to work ok and those slingshots smell really good now...

Little piece of Maple, from some trail pruning forestry had left as part of landscape found it's way into
recycling. Went over the top, using Sparco 107's, tied with Thera, and pouch cut from

This ia a nice and quite symmetrical antler of ash I gathered six months ago. It was well dried and seasoned before being carved. I finished it with linseed oil, camellia oil and beeswax. Thanks for watching. Bob.

I'm announcing this comp a little earlier than it actually starts to give everybody a heads up and some time to plan ahead.

This will be a TUTORIAL competition.

The comp will start on the 15th of February to coincide with the end of Slingshot of the Month and run till the end of the month, the 29th of February.

To qualify you need to post something to the Slingshot Tutorials sub forum between the 15th and the 29th of February.

This can be a pictorial, a build log, a video, a step by step set of instructions, a how to shoot class, anything really.

The winner will be chosen by me based on:

Heavy Duty "Coathanger" Slingshot by NICO

I came home from the Diner this morning and saw a package sticking out of the mailbox! In this family ,90% of the time that means something slingshot related!!! IT WAS!! This is a very heavy wire frame or "Coathanger" style slingshot from Nico. In the Spanish Barrios in California where Nico grew up,these "Resortas" were the slingshot of choice because there were hardly any trees around. This is the style slingshot I had growing up in Jersey City also. We made ours from wire coathangers also because the trees around us were mostly down at the park and if you were caught cutting one of those-well deep trouble! Anyway, ours were very wimpy in comparison to Nico's. We used one Wire twisted around and then wound with Electricians tape. He uses two to three heavy gauge coathangers and then wraps with tape. We used single and double strand ganged 64's,he uses triple to quad strand ganged 64's! Serious power here for sure. Thanks a ton Nico! This one brings back a lot of memories of my youth. This is one that was made by special request.... He wanted something a little different but to still be extremely functional and accurate.
It has Desert Camo Dymondwood scales and a ballistic grade carbon reinforced G10 core. Holds 14 rounds of 7/16" steel, or about 25 in 3/8" size. The forks are slotted so that the flatbands or tubes can't slide off the end when shooting. It literally takes mere seconds to change out either bands or tubes, and you don't need any tools to do it either.
A fun little shooter this one!

this is one i cut a while ago stripped the bark off and stained it 3 coats of ronseal outside varnish it fits the hand lovely it has a palmswell and a little kick out on the handle this is the first time that i've fitted the elastic this way it shoots great the elastic is asda red triple band cut at 7" and 25mm to 20mm taper i like the bands short for a quick shot

one of these 2 Magnum Forks has a amazing history that i would like to tell you fellas!!

In the 90`s Rufus was invited evey year on the Arts and Crafts Festival in Asheboro N.C. he shows the people his skills of making and shooting his Bean Shooters!! and of course

he sell them!! "Magnum Model" 10 Bucks` and "Derringer" 7 Bucks!!

The speciality about this one i have is that he only for the Festival (so one time in the year) makes a few forks out of "Holly" wood, generally he makes his forks from Marple or Dogwood!!

So these Holly forks are very special and rare, couse he don´t sell them!! he gave only a few to other Artist of the Festival as a special Gift!!

This "Holly" Fork has his typical Autograph!! Magnum for the Model!! Holly for the wood!! and the Date: Festival 10-2-93!!

it has also the Serial Number 15.647 RH he made this on his last Festival visit..and unfortunately is this Fork right here one of his last Bean Shooters he ever make!!

in the years he also make sometimes different Models, so this rare one here is somthm special for the Ladies from out of Dogwood (very fine)

This Fork has also his typical Autograph, Ladies Special for the Model!! and the Serial Number 8.625 RH!!

Target shooting camera?

It's a fairground attraction that takes a photo of the shooter every time he/she hits the target. This wouldn't be difficult to implement on a slingshot target. All you need is a microswitch connected with an audio jack to a camera wired trigger. Obviously, the camera would need to be protected behind a clear screen. it would take 10 minutes to make and 1 minute to set up on the day.

This could be done at tourneys and the photos combined into a roll of honour photo album.

What do you think? Has it been done?

I have some 3/8" re-bar in the garage and time on my hands. Has anyone ever tried to build with re-bar? Any thoughts you'd like to share? I was thinking that I'd wrap the handle with 550 cord. It's pretty abrasive so I'm obviously concerned about how to protect the bands.

I've been finding a lot of wood that looks good on the outside

but when i get the bark off, i find sawdust trails through the wood, holes and little dugouts.
(hiking stick im working on)

The wood often has a few of these guys munching away.

i find some old and dead in the little holes.... others live and wriggly.

I have been working on this natural for a few weeks now and am finishing up the last few coats of polly on her. Ive managed to keep the "grub munch" and spalting intact and i think it makes for a very unique slingshot.

I'll have pictures and the total build posted as soon as i finish it.... Back to business though. POLYPOLYPOLYPOLYPOLY......... : ) Actually had it banded up for a few days of shooting i couldn't resist. The forks aren't trimmed yet in the photos here in case you were wondering... don't want to reveal the final look too early though! gotta add some suspense to the final reveal : )

Does anyone know more about these grubs/worms? Have any experience with grub munched wood? It is amazing stuff. Bugs that leave little carvings in the wood?!?! How awesome is that!? When you look at the trails closely, after all the digested sawdust is knocked out of the track, tiny little grooves are present, you can see them in the closeups where the bug scrapped and scrapped the wood. fascinating....

trying to figure out why

went out today after taking care of some chores (washing truck) to take some shots bareback, loaded up my 3/8's hex nut and let'r fly
dang right off my wrist bone, thinking what the heck, I mean it cleared a 6 ft. fence in front of me and on out to the road in front of our place
NOT GOOD to say the least, picked up a rock this time and wamm another hand hit, so I put it down picked up my little fork with 107's and
just drilled where I wanted them to go, what a nice shooter, not giving up I remembered I had not tweak the pouch upward
so question is can some one explain why this tweaking makes so much difference? I realize it positions the pouch up but I would think when letting it go
it would return almost immediately to the normal position, just wondering

forgot to mention, after tweaking, my shots were flying true and no hand hits.....

A slingshot is where you find it and I found this one cutbside. Well it was not a slingshot when I found it, but a broken crutch. I cut it down reversed the handle and arm clip and drilled the aporopriate holes. Then I made a simple tip insert with 1/4 stainless rod, a dowel plug and epoxy putty. The whole job took about 45 minutes not including the drying time. I might add over the top pins later. Its a shooter and can you imagine shooting it butterfly style. I need Torsten fot that! -- Tex

A Nice Present From Croatia!

I recently exchanged letters with a young man from Croatia. His name is Martin and like me,he's a big slingshot nut! We agreed to trade slingshots and I recieved mine yesterday. Martin has no power tools only a rasp and file and hand saw. He sent me two slingshots-one a tiny little Dogwood fork and a Cherry Board cut of his design. Great little slingshots and he also sent me a supply of BB's for my little Dogwood Natural. What a fine young man( he's 16 ) he is! He was apologizing for his English in his letter. I told him WHY? I wish I could write his language ( even one word!) the way he writes mine-perfect! I appreciate this gift very much and know how much work went into these frames. Tournaments Galore!

We have our Tournament (The East Coast Slingshot Tournament) going off in April of this year ( 27-28-29th to be exact) . Well I found out much to my and all slingshot enthusiasts delight that Chief AJ will be having a shoot in Tuscola Illinois this spring! If that's not enough ,here is some more for you shooters! I also have found out that Kent Shepard( He of the biggest slingshot collection in the world) is feeling much better ( Bless him) and is planning to do the Summer Nationals Slingshot Tournament this summer(June 28th-30th). This event will also be in Illinois -not sure of location yet but I'm sure Kent will post something( I'm thinking Chambersburg). THIS IS AWESOME! Three shoots in one year! Talk about promoting the sport! This is what we all want. There is another one going off in England too- besides the regular Italian,Spanish,Belgian,Japanese,and Chinese tournaments!!!! I have been looking at pulley designed slingshots that allow for an extra 6 or 7 inches of band length .... which leads me to this :

If that same pulley slingshot had it's band connection point extended that same 6 or 7 inches further forward, INSTEAD of the pulleys, would it make the approximate same velocity, since the bands would ne the same length ?

I hope that made sense LOL ...

Kent Shepard is going to have a slingshot festival in Chambersburg IL on June 28-30th. He told Chief that he'd like to have over 25 participants. He said anyone Chief could invite or bring along would be appreciated and encouraged.

Once again, hello from another Newb. I am going to build three slingshots, and man do I ever have some questions ! So we will start with the first one I want to build ... I am going to build a copy of this :

And here are my first questions :

Where to get the really small bands like that ?

Since i can not see the backside of the slingshot, I can not tell how the bands secure on the backside. I can see the bands pass from back to front, then loop back through from front to back. Can anyone tell me how they most likely secure in back ?

And lastly ... Any reason this would not be just as good made from aluminum ?

Slingshots in Belize

I am taking a trip to Belize in March, and I have a couple of questions.

1. Guatemala has a history of very interesting and unique slingshots. Belize and Guatemala are neighbors. Is there anything like that in Belize?

2. If I go down to the beach and start plinking around with a slingshot (not at birds or animals) am I likely to get in trouble with the law? Does anyone know if slingshots are regulated or prohibited in Belize?

The wife tends to leave her hairbrush on the bathroom vanity. every day I see this brush and think I should be able to do something with the design of the handle. sooo....I came up with this....22mm spotted gum with a laminated handle cum palm swell made from Queensland maple. I haven't come up with name yet, I've just been calling it "geez what a nice little shooter!"

I had a request for a plywood Recurve Hunter so I made one for myself to see if how it would turn out. This one is made from 3/4 birch. I had to glue three layers together to get the size I needed. I think it will be allright I am going to make one out of oak ply and see what that looks like. This one has one coat of linseed oil the wood seemed very dry. I have been shooting it this afternoon and it shoots fine.

Only suitable material I currently have to make frames with is some 3/4" and 1" redoak. And don't have bandsaw with which to split them.

Am getting bit tired of the natural oak look that have used in my several homemades.

Hey Everyone, just wanted to share this with you, If you ever come across a swivil chair like the pictured below look again because there is sling shot ammo in them. I had a couple of these chairs that the company I work for was throwing away and I took the chair apart where it "swivils" and there were 30 3/8 inch ball bearing in each chair!!, so I got 60 free shots. So if you ever see these being thrown away take a look and see if there are any ball bearing in them if so grab em!!

My first post for a while a lot of bad came about the end of last year and the hobbys I have had to take a back seat, well now things are working out I'm looking to re kindle old flames ") . It seems apparent to me the new flavour of slingshot is the laminate and I'm interested in trying it out , my problem Is I don't have and acrylic sheet or fancy tough plastic. however I do have some left over pine floor board appox 1M by 10mm thick and countless scraps of wood effect laminate floorboards in all favours lol. If I was to use a strong wood glue or some sort of resin set to sandwich the 10mm pine between to outer layers of laminate wood effect floor would this withstand the stress of use? each material on its own is not particularly strong the laminate floor I can snap by hand so obviously alone its no use but when bonded in this way is it possible weak woods can become strong ? thanks

what ammo do you use for plinking, targets and hunting i have used all different sizes for targets and find the size im best with hunting or targets is 9.5 to 11mm steel or lead with lead giving best penetration on fur or Ali cans and i like the smaller calibre so much i just bought a single lead 9.5mm mould capable of making one shot every 5 to 10 seconds once you have a good system going and i love it just as long as im wearing goggles thick jacket and gloves its great making your own ammo balls

Hi guys, newbie here so probably the first of many annoying questions with obvious answers
I have ordered a gamekeeper Pocket Poacher slingshot to get into the sport, Have ordered some 12 mm lead ball to try.
Once I have practiced and can shoot accurately enough to make humane kills, I intend hunting rabbits. Will this size ball be ok for that purpose ? also lead or steel, does it matter ?

Darrel (dgui) doesn't post here anymore but I wanted you guys to see this anyway. This is one of the most amazing shots I've ever seen. He shoots a walnut in the air with his slingshot, reloads a marble with the walnut still in the air and shoots the nut before it hits the ground.

I just made a friend who happens to have a 3D printer!!! and i'm dying to get a slingshot outta that thing! I just have to get a design into STL format. A type of file used by 3D printers. There is some serious potential with this thing. The machine can be built by anyone. (Well mostly anyone) What's cool is that the designs are all "open source". Makerbot Industries has the Thing O Matic as it is commonly called, basically takes whatever image you give it and prints it out using a thermoplastic extruder across a variable axis. Picture it being made layer by layer stacked up until the image is what you intended. And the material used is ABS plastic. The same stuff legos are made with! This machine actually prints it's own parts. pretty cool.

This website shows how you can build your own, or purchase one. It also answers all the questions you could have about it that are beyond this little post.

Okay, so my brother wants me to make him a 'Gripper' model from the shared designs section. The problem is, he wants hi forks pointed, (ala Devil Horns.) I thought it could be a cool design, but before I cut it out, I was wondering how you guys would attach band to such a piece. I was thinking maybe Gypsy tabs canted at a roughly 60 degree angle inward as to clear the fork, What do you think? Any suggestions would be great, and as it's a custom, if i finish it, of course I will post pics.

I got good news and bad news. The good news is I found a place to score some free hardwood. I got:

Brazilian Cherry

Ipe

Walnut

Birch

...and a random piece of oak about half the size of these I didn't take a shot of.

Here is the thing though. They all have these annoying grooves of various sizes on the backs of the samples.

I have A ) sandpaper on a flat board and a ton of elbow grease and time or B ) an ancient Random Orbital Sander. Before I start messing with this wood I wanted to see if anyone had any better idea on how to deal with these that might yield a better outcome.

Strength of material seems to have come up again, so i thought I'd do a little testing of some of the wood I had laying around. Since I believe it's the 'shock-ability' of the timber that's important I came up with the drop test.The idea is to drop a 2.25kg sledge hammer from a height of 2.5 feet until the samples broke.
I'll let someone else work out the force.

The samples were roughly cut 22mm wide by 135 mm long, although the timber is nominally called 18mm I've written the actual thickness on the wood as well as their species.

The big surprise was the 30mm plywood/multiplex, admittedly it was just some cheap pine ply I still thought by doubling the 15mm it should have lasted longer!!?? No surprise with the Spotted Gum, It's the Aussie equivalent of hickory.....noted for it's toughness and shock-ability, this why they are both used for axe and hammer handles and why hickory was one of Rufus's preferred woods!

This is just for a bit of interest and you can draw your own conclusions, and this is definitely not meant to be the be all and end all of testing wood.

I couldn't pass this up when I saw it in the woods where I use to swing on vines around 45 years ago.
We called them grape vines but they did not bear any fruit but me and my buddies. We would swing over a hill drop down in the leaves several feet below. It seemed like 20' but I am sure it was less but it was enough to get hurt if we did not roll when we landed.
So I am still playing with them after all of these years.

I hope this hasn't been asked before, if so forgive, but since getting the bug for the bareback style I've been wondering, will shooting bareback be as effective as forks in say a hunting situation, or would forks be more accurate at longer ranges? I remember someone stating how much easier it was for them to pull a heavier set of bands/tubes - due to wrist problems in the past, made since due to a more direct in-line draw where you don't have that distance from web of hand to fork tips - thoughts?

Found a nice fork while helping a friend prune a Tree some about 6 months back... .. Don't even know what type of tree it was. I let it dry, cut it to size, sanded and shaped it a bit (not silky smooth because I wanted to keep a rough look), threw on a set of bands and voila, little plinker. A board cut is in future plans but it would help if I had tools to cut with. Lol.

This question may be hard to answer without seeing the frame, but im working on my first boardcut, just something i drew up and cut before i learned about all the different variable in catapults. Once its ready for bands, what determines whether I use flats or tubes? Over the top and through the forks is another mystery I have yet to figure out as well. All advise is greatly appreciated.

In every one of the instructions I have seen on attaching the bands to the pouch they show you having to stretch the bands then tie. Why? Every time I have a band failure it is right at the tie point. I have started tying the bands in front of the pouch and have never had another break. I have tried the tube slip over and most have failed and beside using my method I can be done by the time the first slip over tube is put on. Not saying this will work for everyone but has been much easier for me.

I named her "Hamadryad", a nymph of the trees, according to Greek mythology, that was born and died with the tree that was sacred. I want to thank Irfan for the tips he gave me to improve this shape. never had a fork hit till today and not once but twice ? I was not holding the frame tilted or had the bands at the wrong angle but smack right fork tip badly dented aarrgh No i thought not my latest frame dented anyway tried a second shot same place it struck again same spot and this time chipping a piece of wood out by now im very upset and feelin sorry for myself. What causes it and why bands not fitted right , the gap was only 35mm on this frame as opposed to 45-50mm on my other original frames ?

Hello everybody. A friend sent me a one-inch thick red oak board. This is what I made with it. It is my impression of the slingshot in Martin's avatar, which I have been admiring for ever.

This is a real hunter. If I get out after some rabbits this winter, it's what I will definitely use. I have it armed with some tapered 0.040 latex. With some .44 cal. lead I won't have any trouble getting a kill. Man this is a sweet shooter!

It is finished like a user, not a piece of furniture, i.e., raw linseed oil and beeswax. This will be no drawer queen, that's for sure.

I did ask Martin's permission before posting this -- thanks, man. And thanks to MXRed for the great piece of lumber.

hi all
i recently got some multiplex of gk john and really liked the stuff . i came up with a design i like and was wagering wheather to make it a palm swell slingshot or not. ii did in the end. the multiplex was surprisingly easy to cut and work with. the palm smell is made from Aussie black wood. i dident realize how beautiful this wood was i still have a big piece to make a board cut out of cant wait for that. i rubbed linseed oil mixed with mineral oil on the then finished in superglue. i would like to thank gk john and bullseyeben greatly for supplying the materials i used during rhe making of this slingshot.

1842s vs 107s on my favorite frame

I've been playing around with 107 bands again just because changing things up keeps it interesting. I shot up a few targets for comparison purposes with 107s and looped 1842s, which is what I've mostly been using since I got the Performance Catapults SPS around Thanksgiving.
This is an utterly unscientific comparison, I just wanted to see what happened if I changed it up. I have 2 months practice with the 1842 setup and less than a day with the 107s. I shot 5 shots at each target from 10 meters and 25 yards since these are the ECST distances.
Here's my targets, labled with bands and distance:

I figured out the 25yd/107 combo better after a little more practice.
Findings? 107s are smoother to shoot and possibly more consistent but much slower than 1842s. They draw quite a bit lighter, though so that's the trade off. I'm running them at 7.5" active length for my 34" draw. I had to really aim high from 25yd to get them to work but once I did they work ok. The speed difference switching to 1842s was almost a little disorienting at first.
I'll probably keep playing with 107s this week and see what I think then

Here is something either I haven't seen used or just glazed over it somewhere.

I tried pulling my bands one time through the yoke and shooting with the bands tied in a regular TTF tie off. I noticed it sounded quieter due to not slapping the forks.

This may not be anythign revolutionary but I like that it may not abuse the bands as much (if it matters in the long run of band life).

I shoots the same and is as easy to pull the bands back through the forks and load. I slide my finger down the,top band towards the pouch while extending the bands up away from the fork tips to be sure the bottom one clears the top of it's tip. It straightens the band and presents the pouch perfectly for loading.

Very smooth and fast!

Hi all, found a few designs I like, all the theraband type, just wondered how do I attach tubes in place of theraband?
not that I dislike theraband, I'm just using what I already have available. the only way I could think is to epoxy a pin horizontally at the top centre of each horn and push the tube onto this, but being new to cattys i was unsure if this would work.

A friend recently pointed out to me that an episode of the British TV series Midsomer Murders involves the use of a slingshot. Season 13, episode 7, titled "Not In My Backyard" is the one to look at. Alas, the slingshot is used only for vandalism, once again reinforcing the public image of slingshots as something to be banned. I wish there could be better characterizations in the public media.

New to catapults and slingshots, I'm a Bushcraft instructor and knife maker by trade.
Always been into hunting, but air rifle hunting.
Spending most of my time in the woods, lugging an air rifle round with all my bushcraft kit is a nightmare

Good day, gentlemen.!!
Today's the day I leave my lair, to present to you one of my latest creations. like all good things in life, comes from a fortunate accident. I had my hands on a fork that was almost perfect ... guayabo (guava), I cut this fork long time ago, hoping to have some interesting idea to use this piece.

With poles being so open, I thought it would be best, to interpret the model ... I do not remember his name, Mr. joerg masterpiece ... but I did a lot of nonsense! cut over the handle ... and there I was… with a perfect fork… perfect!!, with almost no grip at all!!.

So ... I took a dry branch of guayabo (guava) ... from another tree, from another region .... and a scrap piece of mesquite as a spacer ... threaded rod and some epoxy ... I prayed to the creator and I began to make sawdust ... and out came this piece, with which I am amazed.

Two pieces of guayabo (guava) tied together with a spacer of mezquite .. and a detail of cow leather stabilized on resin (two layers, with black skin in between)

Well when I got to the mailbox yesterday I had a pleasant surprise waiting for me from BaneofSmallGame, a real nice little rustic pocket shooter, according to BoSG it is Oak with a Dannish Oil and wax finish. It has a real interesting look that the picture really doesnt show. Some of the bark and under bark was left on which give it a real nice texture and almost a antique or ancient look to it..BoSG also inclosed a nice set of gum rubber bands with it, which I set up in a beanshooter style, the low forks makes it a dedicated flipper. He also drilled the forks so I could use Chinese tubes on it as well...He said in a note that he only had about a half hour's work in it but that does nothing to effect the quality or functionality...Thank you very much BoSG for this excellent natural.

Im sorry to say I had to contact Dayhiker to find out who had been so kind as to send me this gift, I'm terrible with names on the best of occasions and I know most of the members here only by their screen names or first names only. So thank you DH for letting me credit where it was due..

I received this in the mail from our friend from Italy, Mr. Bob Fionda.

This beautifully carved and lovingly -- no, exquisitely -- finished slingshot belongs in the stratosphere of slingshot art. It is very impressive once you actually get it in your hands-- and it fits mine to a tee!

Bob included a perfectly made set of TBG target bands and a super-light pouch. Needless to say, I banded it right up and went to cutting a soda can in half in minutes.
This beautiful Blackthorn sculpture will be a treasured part of my collection and I feel honored to have been gifted with such a piece.

My 1.5 yr old son was shopping with mom the other day and while in the "ladies" section he grabbed a bra, pulled back on the straps and said "linglot", which in his language is slingshot. My wife just had to laugh and call to tell me that the youngest is already on the right path.

I got the dragon finished up and the finish came out not so good because it was a gift to my cousin for his birthday and I had to stain and clear coat it all within about 3 hours and dry it. I put thereband black on it and used a chunk out of a leather belt for the pouch.

A solution to an old problem.

good day to you mates! been frustrated trying to get proper band and pouch for my fly shooter, everything i used was just too heavy for peas and BB's, including the pouch's! when i woke up i looked at the little guy and a bolt of lightning hit me, below are the results.

i reinforced the eye support with thin cut 107 rubber to ease friction at the fork's.

cut my Silver Thera from the eye bolt to exactly 8.

cut a piece of 107 to 1 1/4" for the pouch.

made 2 constrictor knot's and sliped them over the bands.

brought each piece of Thera to the opposite back end of the 107 pouch.

put a small pony clamp on the centered and evened out assembly.

slipped the constrictors into place and tighten.

the pouch is inverted because otherwise it could hold your ammo, but once its loaded it is concave. (learned that from Henry)

it hold the ammo very well, molds to the shot, and is very light and well it works really well.

I had snapped my original Tommy salter (yes a tear was shed).so i had fired off a email to Pete at milbro pro shot,and being the gentleman he is,a deal was done regarding the original.The pics that follow,really dont do the work justice,but anybody who has work from Pete will testify at the quality and workmanship Pete and his company put into their catapults.The other thing of note being Pete himself,a really nice guy to deal and communicate with.Id reviewed the Tommy Salter when i first got the catapult,and was amazed at how easy it took to the pfs techniques,let alone how accurate a catapult it was,hence me now being even more happier than when i first got it!Pete and myself discussed materials ,and settled on alloy,this being as close to the original as we could.Now me as a layman,i thought a cast from the original would be that,an obvious cast,but not so in this case,the catapult Pete sent me far exceeds the original by a long shot,just check out how crisp the lettering in the thumb brace is!(i feel personally Milbro pro shot uk have done this right across their range,making their repros 10 times better than the original) not to mention giving me the confidence to shoot it without the fork tip breaking.The kicker for me ,to make a good morning a great morning was the inclusion of a Brass version!!Ill let the pics do the talking,but as i said from the off,i really cannot do the pieces of work Pete sent me any justice,but i done the best i could.Whats really done it for me,is knowing that i now own 2 beautiful pieces of functional art that will out last me ,and can be passed from myself to my sons when the time comes

This is Canuck Slinger, a new member. I used slingshots and other homemade weapons when I was a kid, but I recently got back into it after stumbling upon Joerg Sprave's Slingshot Channel. I've built myself a flatband, over-the top, natural-fork slingshot already, and I've been using it in the house with cedar wood balls (much to my wife's irritation).

Customized Pouch Sizes

Does anyone else cut themselves an odd pouch size or a pouch to customized measurements?

I know there are, in general, standard pouch sizes for shooting steel and lead balls and pouch sizes meant for shooting rocks.

I got curious about this when I was looking over the pouch I use. I've seen bigger and I've certainly seen smaller. I don't shoot rocks anymore. I stick with 1/2 ammo of any material as much as I can. I'm just curious to see if we have a wide variety of pouch sizes among different shooters or not.

I developed this for myself after some experimenting.I've been using it ever since. I thought about changing it but it just feels too good between my fingers.

hello guys, i put 15-20 hours into this hammer over the weekend, because of the grain orientation i took extra precautions especially after a few members warned me against horizontal grain. below is my completed chubby hammer, so named because i left it beefy to make the forks heavier duty, as well as placing 5/32" brass pins in 7 locations including one straight down the handle, it currently has 7 applications of Teal oil, and is banded with 1/2 x 7/16 x 8" TBG, The glue i used with the pinning is dried, and the teak oil is curing,, can anyone see a reason why this might still be a risk? it shoots really well, very solid. thanks!

Another dainty Tulip

A few months ago (I think) Harpersgrace sent me a couple of small forks from a Tulip tree in his yard. The first one, I capped with Black Cherry and gave it to his girlfriend, who is a rare find -- one that will shoot with you.
Here I have the second one which is smaller still. I capped this with Black Cherry, pinned with finish nails just like the first one. But the butt cap is made of some soft plastic from an old cutting board my wife was gonna throw away. The finish, however is spar varnish instead of the CA glue I used on his. The wood stayed much whiter under the CA glue.

Not bad, I think I will put some 1/2-inch straight cut latex on this with a super light pouch and have some fun with 3/8th steel vs coke can.

Notice the forward tilt of the forks.

hello every one ,
on my previous topic you may have seen what my latest project was going to be , well I've finally finished it.
it has a yew handle carved by knife, steel forks 6mm dia, and beech fork tip the beech is just fantastic on this some great unusual colours ,I was originally going to use yew fork tips well I did but I left the forks to long and had to cut the down, the epoxy was to strong to get the tips off.

I really like this catty I think It looks really good. the wood was dipped in linseed oil then left to dry and then dipped in mineral oil, the fork tips are super glue coated. too

My 1st Palm Swell

MXRed, who used to post here, sent me some nice veneer scraps to play with, so I thought I'd make a palmswell. Not wanting to use too much for my first project, I only used a piece of walnut from him, combined with a piece from a pine board I had. This is a scaled-down Chalice made of cheap plywood.

When slingshots are this small, palm swells make a huge difference. This fork could never slip from my hand -- the shape of it makes it feel soooooo comfortable and solid in my hand.

It ain't the greatest, I know, but I learned a little from this project, BTW, it is finished with 5 coats of gloss Helmsman's Spar varnish applied with my finger.

birch vs. oak plywood

I have been looking locally for some birch plywood( the 8 or 16 ply stuff I hear so much about), but have had no luck. 4 ply red oak is readily available though. I was wondering if any one had some wisdom on the strength of this stuff. I know oak is a very dense, hard wood. But, is four ply really a good choice, I assume that the more layers, the stronger the plywood.

I am right handed. I hold my frame in my left hand and draw the pouch with my right. I have severe arthritis in both hands but find that this way is best.
Have recently added a GKJ Pocket Rocket 4 (X 2), a FGC PPFS and a Dankung (one of three)-(courtesy of 'Saurian') Jungle Hunter to my stock of 'shooters'
Each 'pult' has its own characteristics and each of which can be adapted, with a little thought, to the 'peculiarities' of any shooter.

So, at this moment in time, I raise a glass to each of these gentlemen.

To Stephen (Saurian) who does not know directly who I am, (but has supplied me with quite a few Dankung Slingshots and 'tubes'), to Paul (FGC) to who also does not know me directly, ( for the beautiful PPFS I received this week) and to GKJ who modified the 2 PR4's he supplied me with single bands for myself and my good lady wife.
It has cost me quite a lot of money to finally come to the set of tools I wish to use.
Once, in a previous life' I was a British Army Sniper (al la the great Carlos Hathcock [US Marine Corps]-who the PocketPredator Hathcock Sniper' was named after) I am no longer allowed under British Government Laws to even own a 'firearm' but I reckon I can hold my own with most of the 'high level' slingshots available at the moment.

I'm heading to a local cabinet shop in the AM to grab some scraps and try to make myself a boardcut or two.

What should I grab? I don't want to be greedy and take everything only to wind up not using it. Any recommendations on what I might want to ask for in particular?

I was told they had some Russian Baltic Birch plywood... what thickness am I after?

And as far as solid wood scraps... what is the minimum size I would want to work with? For an "average" sized SS do I need a 6"x8" piece or larger?

I made this friday out of 20mm red hardwood from local timber merchants, he said its a type of mahogany but that was the extent of his knowledge ?

What ever the wood it works very well sands and shapes very well and though has no spectacular grain pattern it has become my absolute favourite so much so I had to band it up temporarily just to test before polyurethane coats go on....

The dimentions are 130mm high 90mm wide 47mm fork gap and 35mm depth and widest part at bottom below compass 42mm.

I found some old tubing with pouch baring in mind these tubes are 140mm long at rest and I struggled to get them to stretch to more than 18 to 20 inches but even then the result of a 10 and 11mm steel ball was hit after hit after hit on a couple of drink cans at the end of my garden probably 15 to 20 yards out and was piercing can virtually every time

I cut it out with a jigsaw and spent maybe 10 to 15 mins cutting out on slow speed to keep it mm perfect and even now finished it is pefect dimentions when checked with digital calipers.

All in all its turned out really nice and the wood which was 800mm x 100 cost me £3.50 so am well happy with end result and is big enough for me to get 5 or 6 frames including this one . . . just cant wait to get it coated in varnish and get it banded with double thera band gold flats as it is one very mm perfect accurate slingshot, Thanks for viewing.

Honey Locust

I made these honey locust slingshots this weekend.
The first is Hammermil #48 and has canary wood for handles.
The second is Hammermil # 49 and has black walnut handles.
The ergo is also honey locust, and has Myrtle wood for handles...and I attached M-J tubes on it.
One of the Hammermil slingshots is sold...but I dont know which one yet???
Hope you like them.
The locust wood is a really hardwood, and I like it alot.

Here is a boardcut that I made last night. I have no powertools, just a piece of a hacksaw blade with a makeshift handle, a couple knives, and some sandpaper. I tried putting gypsy tabs on it, and banded it with weaved office rubber bands, in the manner that Charles posted here: http://slingshotforum.com/topic/12956-pros-and-cons-of-office-bands/. Unfortunately I didn't use nuts and bolt to secure the tabs, and instead used what I had around (small nails). Still works okay, I just have to tie the bands at the tabs. Shoots well so far.. I'm not sure that I'll laquer it or anything, this one will probably just be a beater slingshot. Let me know what you think! I got the basic design from the shared design forum. Also, i'm not sure if I should put a hole in the handle, what do you think?

1st New York Shoot of 2012

Four of us got together today out in Long Island New York to do a little shooting. Temps were pretty good maybe low 50's-sun in and out. Had a good time. We shot at Peresh 's house. He has a big yard so we put targets all around it. We were shooting bottle tops,old soup cans,acorns,a Ping Pong or plastic golf ball-all kinds of targets! Good practice because of the varying distances. We also put out some metal brackets that were being thrown out and turned them into staked targets along with some paper targets that we also shot. A fun day and just when we were getting cold,Reena ( Peresh's wife) yelled out and said " lunch is ready"! Nice surprise! We didn't need to be told twice! A great da

Looking For Help: Spray On Poly Coating

I'm really new to poly! I need some help if you don't mind.

Are there any comprehensive guides on poly-coating for slingshots or anything? Is this bad poly, or will it do the job?

As far as I know, I should:
1). sand/clean the surface
2). Apply two coats
3). Wait ~1hr, apply another coat
4). Let it dry overnight

Would that work?

Out walking on the trail today and saw a couple so I nabbed 'em.

The first one has a nice "cant" to it so it might be an interesting shooter when dried and finished?

The second SS, is it one SS, or two... I'm not sure but anyhow that's the least of my problems with it!

Disappointing form

I started with Theraband Silver then progressed to ¾” Theraband Gold. After a while I made a set of tapered Theraband gold 25mm to 20mm. I noticed the stiffer draw and greater impact shot had on target.

The problem was I could not seem to control it. I couldn’t consistently hit a double-tall beer can. I went back down to ¾” straight cut Theraband Silver. With such a light draw I could see and feel how horribly sloppy my form was. I was shocked. I spent the better part of an hour firing half a pound of marbles, slowly, deliberately and with great focus to my form.

After going through the bag twice I was able to easily hit a soda can again 2-3 times in a row again, juice jug caps and score solid hits on a piece of free-hanging stamped-metal chain at 20 feet. I went back to the tapered Theraband Gold and found myself much closer on target than before. I’m going to be using that Thera-silver for the next week or two exclusively to do some much-needed work on my form that’s for sure.

How hard are you on yourselves when it comes to form and do you have any specific methods you use to train yourself to have good shooting form?

Just tried out my new Flippinout slingshot for the first time - what a beauty!
Beautiful to look at, comfortable as can be to hold and shoot.
Accurate as well.
This is only my second (well third technically) non wrist brace slingshot, and I am amazed at how damned great they shoot!
This is also my first over the top configuration.
Love it!
Zero hand slap too.

I'm new to slingshooting.
I'm from The Netherlands where slingshots are not allowed, but i use it only on private property for plinking so i don't hurt anyone.

I started shooting with my catapult for baiting up my fishing spot for carp and then while waiting for a bite i started shooting at cans which other anglers left behind (which i then took home).

Then I'd looked at videos of Bill Hays and Jörg Sprave and got hooked on sling shooting.

Hey all,

After my first board cut a few days ago i started on a fatter version. Something that would feel comfy in my hand. Just after I finished my first, Deano came out with something similar but chunky! Lead me to this...

Lessons learned:

Laminations are hard.
Get better wood glue.
I dont like working with white oak. (maye that is just my inexperience talking )
Take more time sanding.

to begin feel free to point out the shortcomings, i wont take it personal, i was going to try this in ply, but could not find any in small supply, so i am just using some red oak, ( i know ) with the grain running horizontally ( i know ) , i bought an Dremmel tool to go along with the project and quickly found out the dremmel is not the best wood cutter, it does fine if you have thin wood but my oak is 1 1/2 thick. and i am serious about the comments, how else do we learn right.

My Bill Hays Seal Sniper

Just wanted to share this with all of you, I just got my Bill Hays Sniper SS in the mail today and spent a good two hours shooting it. It is made from marine grade polymer board and cam equiped with TBG bands and an awsome pouch. An added bonus that I was not ecpecting was the bag of ammo that came with it. I have been around "Bean Flippers" my entire life and up until recently, I had no idea that they had gotten so popular. i bought a new Barnett a couple weeks ago and was completley disappointed. It really was quite junky. I sent it back and dug into my antler box and came up with these (HOSS and LITTLE JOE). The antlers are Texas whitetail that I harvested two years ago with my 330fps recurve crossbow.

i have spent the better part of two days searching this forum. I have arrived at the conclusion that I need to find a suppier for band material.I used all the blue theraband that I had to make the triple band for Hoss. The Blue shoots very fast and accurate but not too durable.

Is there a member that will sell/trade for some band material?

I went to three stores to find a couple of miniature table vises to make a "Band Jig". I could not find any so I returned home and dug around and found the comination of clamps that work very well.

Made my first palm swell one yesterday the frame was already made an in need of finishing so yesterday I glued a piece of scrap mahogany to it and than today shaped and finished it other than varnishing, the other small narrow forked multiplex ply one I made a day or so ago and once again needs varnishing when I get round to it.

The redish hardwood chunky I made today from 20mm hardwood similar to mahogany ? bought from local timber merchants near by... red meranti perhaps really not sure, its got no spectacular grain but is very nice to cut out and work ?

Anyway its same as the little multiplex its next to in pic I just made it wider forked and increased the gap so it now measures 130mm high 90mm wide 48mm gap approx so more like the size and dimentions i wanted and added a compass again as I like this little feature, just hope the wood is up to strong powerfull flatbands....I cant see why not due to it being 20mm thick but I know some people have used pine from 15mm up with no problems but they're braver than me.

The little one with palm swell is quite nice though but as I never done one before cant help but think I did it wrong ? or should I of semi finished it then stuck it on instead of working a piece of square wood once stuck on the frame.....

What sizes of ammo would you prefer?

I have recently found a deal on steel ball bearing ammo that is too good to pass up! I wanted to poll my fellow enthusiasts to determine which sizes they most prefer and the quantity that they would like to purchase.
Clearly Royal is the best price if you need 15# or more of ammo. However, if you wanted smaller quantities or wanted to mix and match several sizes in one order under 15#, that is not an option with Royal.

As such, what sizes do you prefer and how much would you care to purchase per order when you buy ammo?

If you purchase from Royal in the quantities they require, don't worry about responding. However, if you like to experiment with different sizes and smaller quantities, I want to know what you prefer.

minimum fork gaps

i was just wondering if there should be a minimum fork gap when hunting ? Obviously not so small that you can barely see through it but in theory the pouch and bands pass through this gap at high speed so small gap and lets say a 90mm leather pouch would probably get caught on way through depending on gap size and whether using bands in drilled holes Or flatbands on top ?

The reason is i have made a new slingshot with just 35mm gap and depth as i wanted a tiny compact little pocket hunter but trying out double theraband gold with 90mm pouch the accuracy is up and down as im sure the narrow gap hinders the pouch on passing over / through ?

I decided to try out the microwave drying method since I've read about it quite a few times. It was damp when I picked it up. I found a couple of the little worms that made all those lines on the surface. I cleaned it up with some sandpaper and ran it through the microwave about 4-5 times... no cracks, no splits so it looks like I'm good. I think I'm going to trim this one down to a Pocket Hunter sized sling. I don't have anymore CA glue and no linseed oil yet but I'll find something in the garage to finish this with. This will hold me over until I can get some Linseed oil and go crazy with the board cuts.

I am a new member on this forum.
This is the first slingshot i made. I call it HammeRed because the design is from Joërg' s Hammerhead and my real name is Redouan( everyone calls me Red). I also want to give it a red color touch but i take my time, don' t want to do something i' ll regret.

I am, now, working on a new project. Also base on Joërg' s Flying Buttress and have more projects, all inspired from you all guys. I checked out the shared section and now, my brain is hurting me.

the other day I came upon a piece on bareback shooting and this particular one showed a leather

piece with a snap button on it where your little finger was to go, then of course it continued up

and around as some of the others do. But now I can't locate it, would anyone out there be familiar

I made my first slingshot based on his Hammerhead design. Then when i was looking a vid from Bill Hayes on the Slingshot Channel he talked about this forum so i signed in here too. hi!

i made a handfull of frames from board and naturals.
some have short and narrow, some wide and long forks.
i shot all of them (over the top mostly) with latex-based flatbands of the strongest kind this brand has to offer ("ALEX", not exactly theraband gold, but still enough asskicking power, stretch and backsnapping for a noob like me).
Pouch is made of rather thick leather, an old belt, like 4mm strenght. As i mostly shoot pebbles of all sizes (not literaly all sizes), the pouches always are kind of wide.

and now the desperate part:

every third shot in average hits the same point on my middle finger OVER and OVER again, resulting in an ugly flesh wound, as i kept going for three days, bleeding, in order to somehow learn not to mess up my hand, but i failed. it hurts!
Do i really have to shoot with gloves? Do you guys have to wear gloves? am i retarded? i cannot, what so ever, figure out why this keeps happening. I tried holding it in left as well as in the right hand, shooting vertically and horizontally, turning the pouch, centering the ammo as good as possible and even pray to the allmighty, but still the results remain the same, pretty good accuracy in like 10 meters distance (beer can) for a beginner, but pain all the time. all my forks look like a bad joke: splattered with blood, my blood... WHY ??
funny thing is: i handed them to a friend of mine, he shot it a few times, and just did not know what i was talking about, he just laughed, without pain. watching him shoot didnt do anything for me. couldnt figure it out

any thoughts on this?

First Homemade Slingshot

Well to star off I am knew to slingshots and wood working and am only 16 years old so I don't have a giant amount of skills, any way I cut down my lural hedge a few months ago and went looking for a natural y shaped branch and this is what I found. So I carved the bark off and sanded the stick and used a dremel tool to help shape it and rounded the tops for bands.

Greetings one and all,
I had no idea that slingshots had gotten so high tech! I used to shoot quite a bit back in boyscouts, (im 38 now)but once I got my first bow, I never thought to keep shooting the lil buggers. I stumbled on to a slingbow vid on youtube, which led to the slingshot channel, (that guy is awesome!!) then to here. Im so amazed at all the different variants on the 'fork'. Im ready to dig in and learn all I can. Thanks to everyone for what Ive learned so far, and what I will learn in the near future.

I made this one up today with same template I made mahogany one with that I posted on here yesterday I got this out of the last scrap of 18mm multiplex ply I had thrown out as thought it was too small but managed dig it out the bin to get this little one...

I want to leave it as it is but everytime I varnish straight over bare wood the fisrt coat raises the grain slightly and gives it a finish i'm never happy with ?

Is there a way of sealing it first so it can be varnished after and preferably something that wont tint or darken the wood before hand as I have used danish oil on a few occasions but it is'nt totally clear so does stain or tint the wood a bit but does really give a good primer for when you start varnishing.....

New way to carry slingshot ammunition

So far I've had good results carrying 12 steel balls at a time. 18 might work, but anything beyond that is definitely going to end up with you losing half your balls. Thoughts?

I picked up a throw away tire from the tire store and cut the side wall out and made these two targets. I got tired of replacing cans. I have one concave and one convex to see if there was any difference in the shot rebounding. I don't think there is any difference. They both spin real well. I don't think I will have to replace these real soon and there is a loud smack when you hit them.

Hi Guys,

I need help and some advise how to proceed.

I made a purchase a few weeks ago from a website a lure fishing company from PA.

I paid the guy by Western union and since then he hasn't sent me the goods I've purchased which is about $73. I sent him several emails and he always found a excuse to delay my package by a few days. What got me on the nerve is that he sent me a fake tracking number and since I confronted him, no reply. I've asked for a refund which I doubt I'll get.

Is there a department or a service in the U.S where I can report this a a fraud?

Please help because I want to take this action further.

I've the receipt of the western union transaction, his address and all the emails.

Any advise what I can do?

I have been playing around with my new band saw. Nothing fancy yet. This one was colored with red food dye and given 4 coats of satin gloss Helmsman's spar varnish. (I know the lanyard hole is off-center.)
This thing was fun shooting this morning.

3/8 steel with these Thera Black zipping right out there! I like this one. Hope you do too. A bit of color is nice this time of year.

Great Slingshot organization rack

We all come to the point where we need to organize and space save with our growing slingshot collections. Below is what I had to come up with as I didn't want to box my slinghshots.

Ok it isn't perfect but I am using this until I can rework it.

The rods are 3 inches apart on the main rack can be less but even at 3 inches hold a catty 4 inches total height. The rods are 1/4 metal rods. I couldn't slide the rubber tube I had over them.Oh well.

The dowel pegs are 1 5/8 on center.

As you can see if I was to make this from scratch and not adapting the dowel peg rack, the dowel peg rack should be dropped down for easier access.

Thought i would share a slingshot crossbow i made today,
Basicly consists the same trigger design as JS's crossbow with the addition of rollers that uses tubes instead of flatbands.

I've always wanted to build one, one typical day on the slingshot forum chat, couple of members and i had a conversation on benefits on roller functions and such on slingshots
and after learning and noticing the performance myself. I finally decided to make one with long fork extentions mounted on a slingshot crossbow using Dankung tubes as my primary.

The intial build itself was easy with common household tools.
Materials was very minimal also.
L.Q plywood
Aluminium flats/tubes
Mild steel bolts/SS bolts
Nuts and screws.

The nylon rollers i brought was from the hardware store used in sliding doors which is 32mm dia, depending on the rollers you get.
Out of the package the rollers are somewhat stiff, however a quick burst of silicone spray did wonders. Not bad for $6 for a pair and suits the tubes very well indeed.

The performance increase is noticeable, however i'm not to sure on the consistency/accuracy in these early stages.
A pair of guards infront of the fork to stop the tubes coming off while releasing the pouch will be needed.
Simple stock would be nice also

However this thing is a blast to shoot with, and was equally fun to experiment with something different.

Here is a pic of my second homemade. Once again this is black walnut finished with tru-oil and carnuba. The design is Joerg Sprave's "Six Circles", obtained from the "shared slingshot designs" section. I really like the aesthetics of this design. I don't really care for shooting 'hammer grip', but this design is just so.....cool. From here on out I want to make up a couple designs of my own. I obtained an old dremel moto-shop tool today, makes for a decent scroll saw. I'm aiming quite high on the next one...wish me luck.

Yesterday, Bill Hays posted a cool upright pistol slingshot called the Vulcan. Here is my version of it so far. I still have quite a bit of sanding and I have to mount a magnet i the bottom of the buttstock for the magazine to function properly. Bill's designs just keep getting better.

I made the finished one last week out of an old piece of mahogany I think ? but as you can see from sawdust very red very fine and smells like ground nutmeg, Im addicted to the bare wood smell of this

I started this new one yesterday and decided no pinky hole this time and a slightly different shaped bottom although was cut from same template as the first with a little ajustment.

I had a couple of small oil filled compasses lying around and thought I would set one into the bottom of this new one and assembled just for pic by pushing in a piece of tissue paper around compass edge to equalise it as compass is 17.5mm dia and hole was 19 mm, its just roughly shaped and still needs sanding but sanded roughly the surface with compass in and polished with 0000 grade steel wool just to get an idea of finish, I am quite happy with this one too but its only 72mm wide 130mm high by 25mm thick.

not considered to be an eye sore, or in someones way, saw me picking through a pile of Maple.

It's quite amazing how these tree branches and saplings grow. It would be difficult looking at these
Mother Nature has made and try to board cut them with much more symmetry.

I found some 11/32 (0.34"/8.7mm) bulk bearings today for $3.00 a pound. I bought 5.9 pounds, they weigh exactly 1/10 ounce or 43.7 grains each. So for $17.70 I got 891 bearings or $0.02 per bearing. Seems like thats a better price than the big online auction site.

I was looking for a specific slingshot that I had not used in a while the other day, and as I was shuffling the twenty odd slingshots that I have banded up around on the pegs of my wall rack, I realized that I needed another way to display my best pieces. So, this is what I came up with. I get the boxes from a local retailer, and must have 20 or so stacked here and there, in addition to the 9 or 10 that I use to sort my ammo. I originally started acquiring them to make into display cases for my handmade pens at a couple of consignment outlets I had, so I guess a display case for a slingshot is not that much of a stretch.

Anyway, I lined the box with some garment leather, then machined up the mounts for the particular frame I wanted to put in that box. Once I got the slingshot to stay put where I wanted it, I covered the mounting points in leather as well.

This is the mesquite fork I got in the Christmas exchange from rockslinger, and one I got from Bill (dayhiker) last year. I think they look quite at home.

So.... How do You display your favorites?

In search of the perfect release

I think the number one biggest problem in shooting a slingshot with any type of precision is a good release. We need for some of the forum members that are top notch shooters to give us their input on how they developed their release. I am talking about Flatband, Bill Hays, Wingshooter and Tex. I am sure there are others but i do not know who they are.

I know I struggle with this every practice session and constantly trying something different. I think I am finally going down the right road but will know more after a few more days of shooting. Problem is you will find something that works good but is not consistent, one day good next day bad.

Nothing like a nice bit of birch.... even a soggy windfall. Especially if it fits my hand so perfectly in a hammer grip. I've done nothing to it other than cut it to size with an Opinel folding saw and trim the edges and ears with a pocket knife.

I like the ease of band change offered by Yellowhammer's screw-eyes but I was after a more trad look and something which could be easily made with whatever's kicking around.

This time I want to have a go at the butterfly draw so I've gone for long, 1842 tubes - 6.5 inch loop and 5 inch single strand, roughly, attached at the pouch (3x1 inch 'roo) with 1/2 inch bits of the same tube and at the loop with a 1/4 inch bit of tube under a constrictor knot, in front of an overhand knot in the main tube to prevent slippage. I haven't accidentally taken out any windows with it yet.

Makes a bit of mess, but my Limited cache of power tools, made easy work of this synthetic material... tougher than a roo 'bout to roger, and finishes smooth as.. next quest: find out how to bond this stuff to timber good n proper..prob a polyeurathene adhesive i guess...

Hi guys for the first time in 2 year i have a problem with a slingshot that i sent to a customer
in Australia. We both agree that the slingshot has be deliverd into Australia by royal mail,
we can confirm this by the tracking number. how ever the item left us in mid december 2011 and has to date still not been deliver, the tracking number say it is with the Austrailian post service?.All the inport paper work was done by me so i know it was right?.do you think there is eny more i can do to help this customer.He is fully aware that it could be held up with the customs people but what more can we do? you input please thank you Peter

I got the urge to make a natural yesterday so I walked around for an hour or so and snagged a nice looking branch. I'm not sure what type of wood the main Y is but the palm swell is made of 2 pieces of walnut with a teak spacer. I finished the frame in a few coats of CA and slapped on a pair of Tex Field bands.

FINISHED! Forged slingshot concept for project FINISHED!

Today was a good day to fire up the forge and play around a bit. I got an idea about forging a slingshot frame from steel. I have some 1095 high carbon blade steel and....well....I played around with it.

I used a 4 1/4" x 1 1/2" x 3/16" piece of 1095. I heated it up to almost yellow hot and split it with a chisel 2". I used the horn of my anvil to dress it a bit. After letting it cool down slowly for about 4 hours I draw filed the sides and rough edges. The yoke opening is 1" between the forks and each fork is 3/4" wide.

I was pleased that the frame came out well. I'll finish this one up and stamp it with my mark......should make a cool little pocket bb "derringer" SS.

My project slingshot will be forged from 1095 also, bigger though. It will be draw filed and rust browned. I have some scales from Rocky Mountain Big Horn sheep horn for the handle and tips of the forks.

Should make a fun project.

Got a nice 6" by 1/4" by4' piece of oak, so here we go. I'm going to glue it up with epoxy coated cloth between the plys, really looking forward to getting started. Chris

My First. Just Finished.

Thought I would post a pic of my first homemade. I Just finished up rubbing on a couple coats of wax while watching a movie with my wife. The wood is black walnut. It has 10 coats of tru-oil on it and probably about 5 coats of carnuba wax. The design is Gopher's GS-14. Got the template from the 'shared slingshot designs' section. Bands will hopefully be in this week sometime maybe early next week.

"Meat tray" the target

I've discovered that those styrofoam trays that meat is packaged on from the supermarket make great targets . I draw small circles on them and hang by a clip. When shot there is a nice hole made in addition to a nice sound. As they start to break apart I then start to shoot the jagged pieces. Its a fun way of easing me into target shooting as opposed to the plinking style Im used to. I don't shoot papper as well as random objects.

Getting ready to buy a rotary blade sharpener and need to know what the best one is. There was a thread on these about a year ago but new ones have since come out. I find mixed reviews on all of them when used on fabric. The guys that cut rubber need a good sharpener.

As some of you may remember I have been working on getting my father interested in Slingin'
I have made him a large IPE boardcut to fit his big hand (earlier post) http://slingshotforu...__fromsearch__1
I've also felt it necessary to make a nice natural for him. He will be receiving these tonight!!! Complete with birthday dinner at Outback Steakhouse

I cut this natural from a downed limb which i believe to be pine. The wood is light and smells amazing. It was found on a weekend hike i had a while back in Ocala National Forest. I have it banded with Tex's tapered double latex field bands with formed pouch. (These bands are awesome, thanks Bill) It is sanded to around 400 and has a couple coats of boiled linseed oil rubbed in.

Dad holds slingshot in his right hand. This natural has a swell and large handled base that acts nicely as a counterweight when in full draw. Being pine it is not too heavy. The fingers fall nicely over the rounded/swelled knob and the slingshot fits very nice in the hand. Especially if your hand is giant. "Magnum"

I love to read posts in which the slingshot is documented throughout its transformation. I love seeing the end result but being able to see where it came from is a treat! Wish i had a pic of it still part of the whole branch. The moment photographing it came to mind i had already started rasping a bit too.

this is the project i have been wanting to do for a while. i have had all tge parts laying around for months,the ateel rid is 6mm dia grade 304 steel this was hard to work with! i used a improvised jig made from thick wood and 10mm nails, just this morning i wasted two hours just to bend the steel and make the jig.the handle is made of yew and carved with a knife and rasps and the ends are yew too!
also if some one would kindly donate or just let me borrow a 6mm drill bit and i will send back after use that would be great!

A "silent" I did it last year, I have so much fun with this bottle opener and I decided to make a small collection, I keep all the cork with wooden head are very useful, this is what I used for the palm, Opener is average golf ball that had the hole drilled, the arms are very close and decided to put those wooden balls that have been solid and sympathy.

The importance of eye dominance and shooting

Eye dominance is a subject a lot of people have not heard about and others have heard the term but know nothing about it. Every person has one dominant eye. If you are right handed then it is assumed you are right eye dominant. The dominant eye controls our coordination and if we are RH and RD (right hand right eye dominant) then all is well. But almost one in three is XD (cross dominant). I came to these figures by years of teaching shooting both in pistols and long bows. Before you can shoot to the best of your abilities you need to draw under the dominant eye. The closer you draw to the eye the more this rule applies. In other words if you anchor on your cheek bone and opposed to under the chin. An anchor point is a place on your body that the drawing hand touches just before you release the pouch. In my case my thumb joint hits a spot under my cheek bone.

How does one determine which eye is dominant? Glad you asked. The best way I can give is to have you get a piece of paper 8 /12 X 11 inches is fine. Cut a 1/2 inch hole in the center. Hold the paper by its edges and well below your waist, have your elbows locked straight. Look at an object on the wall sever feet away from you. Now slowly raise the paper up until you can see the object through the hole in the paper. Do not bend the elbows. When you can see the object through the hole do not move one thing and hold as steady as you can then if you are right handed close your right eye. If you do not still see the object then close the left eye and the object should be seen. If you are left handed reverse these instructions. Now if you closed your right eye and you can see the object with the left eye open then you are XD. Chances are you have been shooting right handed and wondering why you are not hitting the target. Well now you know.

In every case where I have had a student with this problem I have switched them to shooting LH. All at once they started hitting the target. My advice is to switch and get it over with. Sure you can fight it and some days you will really shoot good then as soon as you get tired or stressed the dominant eye takes over and your shooting goes in the dump. Now if you are drawing to your mid chest and shoot instinctive you may get away with not switching. But I still recommend you switch.

This lil guy was made from an offcut of something called 'Compac' which is used for doors and panels in wet areas in public toilets and showers. It's some kind of really really hard plastic or composite and has a layer of 'laminex' colour each side. I've taken the colour off because it looked ratty after all the cutting, filing ans sanding. Did I mention this stuff is really tough. You can still see some risidual green and I know it looks pretty crap. I'm planning on painting it up with a pressure pack and giving it a final coat of clear but I couldn't wait till I had the stuff and wanted to see how the lil thing would shoot. The fork tips are about 10x10mm so I decided to go with some screwed on gypsy tabs and 1/4" latex tube. It's suprisingly fast, accurate and fun to shoot pushing little bb's away so quick you cant see 'em and does pretty well with the 1/4" too. I'll post other picks when shes all painted and shiny but till then enjoy...

Here is an example in hemp, but I've done them in braided nylon and cotton as well. The quarter is to give a sense of scale. This is a smallish pebble pouch. Stay away from the twisted nylon, it is slicker than you think it would be. The method used is dowel weaving using about 10 pencil thin dowels and then passing the weft across the dowels as the warps, you then use the weft to replace the dowels. You leave enough length on each end to do a circle of 3 to 4 passes and finish with half hitching to do the reinforced loops. I learned this on one of the other lists a while back, from a guy that learned how to do this when he was a kid and leather was in short supply.

Hey gang.

I would like to make some palm swells for 2 slingshots I have in mind for some arthritic acquaintances. I've seen the finished result, but never really how they're added. I assume from pictures that you glue it/screw it on before you do much finishing? I was thinking of using some cedar plywood on the handle of these birch plywood shooters.

I would just try it out and guess, but these are two of the cleanest board cuts I've made, and I'd hate to ruin them...

Started this friday from an old piece of 27mm hardwood an its almost finished but needs another coat of varnish to finish before banding up with thera gold flat bands, sorry pics not that good as indoors taken with my phone but it does'nt do this beauty justice as in daylight the colour and grain is amazing when tilted in the light the dark surfaces become light and vice versa and pattern on certain parts is like a hologram when tilted back and fourth ...

Just thought I would say high to everyone I have been shooting slingshots for 30 + years but I had no idea that there were others with my addiction. LOL I have shot homemades and standard walmart marksman brand and had no idea until a couple of day ago that anything else was available, now it looks like my bank account is going to take a pretty serious hit, I ordered a Dankung American Fox yesterday and today am drooling over flippingout's offerings.

I like to hunt and mould my own ammo from wheel weights and recovered lead shot from the skeet range, usually 45 and 50 caliber. When I lived in AZ I took lots of rabbits and a few quail, I haven't hunted as much in NC but plan too. Well, I reckon I have rambled enough I look forward to chattin with yall about this great hobby. Chris

Thought I would see what I could do with a scrap piece of Goncolo Alves wood. The yoke measures 2 inches at the widest. Length is 5 1/4 inches and maximum width is 3 /12 inches. The finish is Spingfield Armory linseed oil forumula.

How important is equal band tension?

I have seen where some shooters have placed their pouch over a pulley and then drew the bands to see if the pulley turned indicating whether or not they had even band tension . I wondered if this was all that important. I took my Falcon and shortened one band about 1/4 in and shot. I hit the target the same amount of times as I did when they were even. Rufus cut his bands with scissors and there was no way those where equal in any way. And then there is Dgui's video where he takes a set of chinese tubes and leaves one set on the frame and the other set is on his fingers and he still hits the target.

Making a set of targets - Another build along thread

I've been punching a lot of holes in paper lately, and with the toner cartridge on my laser printer crapping itself last night, I decided to make something a little more permanent for shooting.

Looking at a lot of various air rifle targets, spinners and such, I decided to make myself a set of drop away targets with a string reset.

Here are the pics so far.

Cutting out the discs. 60mm diameter, 3mm aluminium plate. Drill and a hole saw make pretty quick work of this.

Cleaning up the target discs on the disc and belt sander. I love power tools.

Cutting the arms, tidying up on the belt sander and marking for drilling.

Time to add the hinges and start the frame they will attach to.

When I was a child, well ... I'm still young at heart, my father used to build slingshot for my brother and I, with natural fork and rubber band. He used some leather from old working gloves, a little bit of cotton cord and that was it. We had great time in summer shotting with them.

A couples of weeks ago I have found this forum ... and read a lot of post ... really interesting, lot of info, great community !

First real session with flatbands.

Hey gang.

I just finished about an hour of shooting. This is the first time I've used flat bands in earnest and it happened to be with TBG. I used scraps from my "real" bands just to see how different they would be from office bands. I used 10 inches with a taper of 3/4 inch to 1/2 inch. My draw length is about 85 cm (33 inches) and these weren't at their limit.

First off I was very surprised to feel how light the draw weight is. I know I was told how office bands have a very heavy pull but didn't agree. Now I do. I finished off my session shooting my regular, office banded slingshot and couldn't believe how hard it was to pull back in comparison.

Second, I found it easier to aim left/right by sighting down the bands. I do this with my office bands, but because they're so thick, it's kind of hard to tell the absolute center... but with flatbands it's pretty much a straight line to the target. What I was having trouble with, however, was elevation. It was not as consistent as I was used to. Sometimes I would be 3 inches high, sometimes 3 inches low. I think it was just my form, because by the end of the session I almost eliminated the guessing game.

I started shooting 1/4 inch steel. I got a few hand slaps and switched to 3/8th steel. I was very surprised that these tiny itty bitty bands chould fire this ammo, and sounded faster than my braided office bands. Now I understand why you guys are crazy for these. =D My tying technique needs a bit of work, but I got it functional at least. Fastened everything with 32 bands. I'm not ready to abandon my tabs and 64s, but I will certainly make another patriot to band up with my optimum TBG bands. I used Jorg Sprave's calculator and these seem about right.

In summation, I'm still more consistent with my office bands, but these flats have certainly captured my attention. I managed to hit my new tiny lizard target 3 times in a row (personal best) and wasn't too wild when I missed. Part of the aim problem might be the fact I'm using a shooter roughly half the size. xD

Will keep you posted on this also I have heard a lot about this sling so every one keep you slings fingers crossed I get it.

I seem to have few imperfections in the glue up, but I really like it, has a really nice fractal type blemish around the bottom of the forks on one side. You can see this clearly in the second pic.

Quick question for all you seasoned slingers out there:

I was born and raised in New Jersey--sadly enough--and was forbidden to even THINK about something like a slingshot or a BB gun, as those two objects are considered murder weapons in the Garden State.

As a result, I am just learning to use this wonderful device at age 25. This isnt much a problem, however; I can hit small(3x5 inches) targets at a decent (5 yards), and I've only been shooting for about three weeks. My wonderful wife went out and bought me a Daisy B-52, and a Marksman 3061 Adjustable, for X-mas. I love them. The only problem is...

I think the factory installed bands are making my shots wonky. I've read lots of information on slongshots in general, but this is a matter I'd rather leave to the experienced users of the world. Are these tubes

installed properly? Does the fact that the pouch goes to one side whilst resting make a difference? I would assume so, but--as I've said--I would prefer to obtain my information through you guys, as opposed to a Wikipedia article or a random blog found through a search engine.

With that said, I feel obligated to add these two, final, comments:

One: My Daisy (Yellow bands, of course) has incredible power, and accuracy to boot. I prefer this one over the Marksman, however, I have the feeling that accuracy over long distances would be quite tricky.

Two: The Marksman (Red) doesn't have much power--yet--but offers accuracy over long range. One can either hit a target point-blank, or from over five yards; there doesn't seem to be any other options.

I could be absolutely wrong about everything I've said in this post, but I AM, I'm willing to admit, a tenderfoot at this. Please, spare me, lol. Any comments will be considered and tested. Thanks to you all, in advance.

Received my Recurve Hunter

Just received my Recurve Hunter slingshot from Fire Ant this evening!
What a beautiful little slingshot.
This is my first real experience with a non wrist brace slingshot - aside from my limited use of my old Scope Shot.
I wasn't sure how good I was going to shoot this type of slingshot, or how good it would feel.
Or if I would like it at all.
Let me tell you, this is probably the most supremely comfortable slingshot I have ever used.
I'm also happy to say that I believe that it is easier to shoot more accurately with this slingshot than with my Barnett folding slingshot.
This recurve hunter fits my grip and my fingers so perfectly that it just sets itself up right into place.
Really nice!

I looked at all the old boards and furniture stored in there but it was all cheap modern chip board until I uncovered an old chair I was given 17 years ago when we moved in this house.

The only parts wide enough were the arms of the chair which were only 72mm wide with a rounded surface one side…… err too small I thought but then came up with a small milbro sized design and shape to get one out of, the wood is very hard and 27mm thick , not sure what it is exactly but it has the most addictive amazing smell of freshly grated nutmeg when cut or sanded and the sawdust is a deep reddish brown similar to cocoa powder ???

Anyway this is it so far, its 130mm high 72 wide 35mm fork gap and depth leaving the forks at approx 18mm each and the cut out done on a medium speed jigsaw couldn’t of gone better and its only roughly cut out and sanded on the rounded side to get an idea of the finished result and with just paper and fine steel wool it shines so with varnish will look the business.

I am one for pinky holes so couldn’t resist but I think when finished it will be very nice and very strong due to its thickness so double thera band gold I think for this one, anyway Thanks for looking and at least it broke today’s boredom as I needed to do another… Let you know how it shoots when completed.

Well, the video idea didn't quite work out the way i wanted when I was finishing this thing, but I managed to get it done anyway. Will have to try to video the next one I guess. Anyway, this is the final product after a coat of CA and a session at the buffer. Let me know what you think!

I found the stave bamboo and cut it a few forks.I prepared them for flat bands and a gypsy type.

I just saw a post by HungaJungaESQ in slingshot shooting forum where he's hung up little rubber toys like lizards n dinos n such because he destroys cans to quickly. Our very own Merlin the wize, aka Charles, and I mean that with utmost respect, responded with the idea of cutting out shapes of thick leather. Both fabulous ideas.
I believe that a really good practice target should have what these guys describe as a "satisfying" (Key word there did you notice? Well of course you did. It's in bold for crying out loud!) thunk or thwack or ting when you hit em but also it has got to be durable, very durable.
My input was something I'd seen somewhere abouts that entailed taking a spoon and cutting off most of the handle so that you can create a loop with the rest and hang it through that. This one seems like it would work in the satisfaction dept by giving a nice little 'ting' sound when you hit it but also, if you hang it right, it would spin over a few times as well. Not to mention all the nice little dings it would acquire after a time from the shot (in my case a very, very long time) So...
Any other inovative, interesting or novel target ideas??? The focus being SATISFACTION (Hmmm, reminds me of that song "I can't get no'oo... satisfaction. I can't get no'oo... Satifaction but I try, and I try, and......." Mick Jagger wasn't it? Yeah well now every time I miss I'm going to hear that bloody thing in my head. Thanks me ya great banana...
Anyway, I'd love to hear some more ideas

Hey guys. My cans aren't lasting long enough and if they don't get torn up, they fall off of my string. I had already started aiming at specific parts of the can, and later through the drinking hole in pop cans... So I threw these together. These little guys are left overs from a box of 20 that I got for a dollar when I first started D&D. I attached them with a rubber band so they would give and bounce when struck and hopefully last for a few hundred hits.

As you can see, they're not very wide, but pretty long. I aim for the body, and sometimes the head if I'm feeling cocky.

I'm not sure you can see him hanging there... but he's there. He's in front of the right-hand crease in the catch shirt.

So far I've managed about a 20% hit rate. Maybe a little worse. But it's SO close most of the time. I swear I shoot just past his arm pit more than I hit him.The best part of this is when he gets hit there is a satisfying "thwack" and he dances around on the rubber band. Then the next shot is on a moving target =D

I really think this will improve my shooting even more!
